#007: If you want to go fast, go alone.
06 February—11 February Copenhagen, Denmark
My recent Copenhagen trip tops the list of my best flight and layover experience so far. I have been told by several people that Copenhagen is a boring place but well, I'd like to disagree. A couple of days before my flight to CPH, I did all my research and made sure my itinerary for the three days I'm there won't be empty.
Here is my list of places to visit and I am disappointed to say I didn't manage to visit all:
Castles/Palaces 1. Frederiksborg Slot 2. Amalienborg Slot 3. Christiansborg Slot 4. Rosenborg Slot 5. Kronborg Slot
Churches 1. Church of our Savior 2. Marble Church 3. Grundtvig's Church
Museums 1. Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek 2. Louisiana Museum of Modern Art
Others 1. Round Tower 2. Royal Library (Black Diamond) 3. Copenhagen City Hall 4. Lagkagehuset Bakery
Italics: Places I didn't manage to visit.
Copenhagen is an expensive city to live in. A 2-zones ticket which takes me from my hotel to town area cost DKK 24 (USD 3.70), that's one-way. I decided that I shall save money and risk not paying for the metro/trains.
I left my hotel on a Saturday afternoon and decided to visit Nyhavn (Kongens Nytorv Station), the waterfront canal is probably the most recognized tourist district of Copenhagen. The weather in Copenhagen is insane, the winds were so strong I had to walk with resistance. Canal tours are available at Nyhavn.
TIP: Choose Nettoboats over DFDS. Same routes, cheaper rate. That's a tip I read online. No, I didn't take the tour.
From Nyhavn, I walked to Amalienborg Slot which is the winter residence for the Danish royal family. Of the four palaces, only one was opened which I believe is the museum. I was excited to find out that Royal Reception Rooms (larger halls) are only opened on Saturdays (lucky me!). There were only two floors opened for visit. The design of the palace was so pale compared to Schloss Nymphenburg. The only room that was beautiful was the Gala Hall which looks like the dance floor in Beauty and the Beast. (Google 'Gala Hall Amalienborg'.)
Marble Church (Frederik's Kirke/Mamorkirken) is 110m away from Amalienborg Slot. This was not a place I planned to visit but I'm glad I did! The interior was simply spectacular and I loved 12 apostles ceiling fresco. Again, I was very lucky because I arrived at the Church at 1445hrs and they open up the observatory tower every weekend at 1300hrs and 1500hrs (DKK 35).
It was a guided tour and the thing about Churches' observatory tower is those goddamn narrow spiral stairs. But it's always worth it. At the deck, you get the best view of 'The Axis'.
From Instagram, I explained what's 'The Axis':
The Axis: Frederiks's Church, Amalienborg and Copenhagen Opera House. From the Marble Church, you get to see the bird'a eye view of the octagonal courtyard with King Frederik V's sculpture by Jacques Francois Joseph Saly. I was told the bronze statue would cost a billion Danish Kroners in present value. The Copenhagen Opera House is also one of the world's most expensive opera houses ever built. Donated to the Danes by shipping magnate, Arnold Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller.
Visited the Round Tower (Rundetårn) shortly after. By the time I reached the place, the sun was already setting. So far, it is the only place that required queueing for tickets. A Danish lady was saying that queue that afternoon was rather short, there were about 15 people infront of me.
Going up the tower was quite fun! It was such a relief to find out that instead of having to climb stairs, it was spiral ramps which were designed for horses and carriage.
Settled for dinner at a Thai restaurant because the weather was too cold and I wanted something to warm my body instead of sandwiches, pasta or pizza. A plate of fried rice and tom yum (well, comfort food for any Asian) cost me USD 22.00. That would be the price of a fancy dinner back home.
Walked to Det Kongelige Bibliotek, The Danish Royal Library or Black Diamond Library. Fancy place! However, it was already closed when I reached the library. Disappointing but I'll be back!
This completed my first day of adventure in the love Copenhagen. I'll be back to write about my second and final day in Copenhagen. Stay tuned! All photos taken by iPhone.
