day 7 / au ! some au details under cut
- L doesnt actually go out of his way to film light during this miserable ordeal.he simply doesnt care about light’s reputation enough to stop rolling and forgets about it the next day. a week later light sees him at mcountdown
- yes lights stage name is kira
- light presents as the perfect idol: single, kind, hardworking, rags to riches story, humble yet confident, just gay enough to queerbait but not face homophobic backlash, passionate, creative etc., when the cameras are off hes basically canon light minus the murder
- light is an all rounder and tenor. he also plays tennis in his free time. he is japanese and has been scouted off the streets. he is a kpop idol and the au takes place in korea. he is a solo idol and has never been in a group before. l is still british and misa is still japanese.
- he writes his own songs. his ego doesnt let him indulge in ghostwriters
-manager ryuk owns a ridiculous amount of chrome hearts simply impossible to buy on a managers salary. light is deeply suspicious and mildly wary of him at all times. ryuk also knows lights real personality and finds it amusing. he takes joy in a gigantic pr scandal which light will inevitably become one day
- rem dreses the way she does without looking misplaced because its in line with misas gothic/harajuku brand. ryuk looks wildly out of place next to light but noone seems to make him change. light tried, very persistently. but even light yagami has to admit defeat sometimes
- light debuted at 17 and is now 22. L is 29
- L works at all things live television and sometimes variety shows. he mainly works for idols. the media company hes signed under works with lights company. light doesnt know this until he violently cyber stalks L after the fly debacle
- they have actually been working together for 3 years without knowing each other and L has filmed light quite often due to him being the companys most popular male idol. light of course never noticed and only sort of recalls now
- L has always found light fascinating because the persona he wears is accepted to be very genuine by the general public. L always thought it was total bullshit, a masterful imitation of a real person.
- light never yells at anyone in public ever. not to misa even though he wants to rip her from his side on the thousand talk shows they go on. not to ryuk when he critiques every aspect of every bit of lights stages. not to his previous managers even though they were wildly incompetent and pissed light off daily. his reputation is everything to him. so when he yells at L in the middle of everyone at the backstage of mcountdown its a bit of a spectacle. thats the first crack L sees in lights shell and he wants to see more
- afterwards is a public apology and bullshit story about grief and a dead relative and misdirection of feelings and the game begins. L gets himself booked on as many as Lights jobs as possible with only one aim. to capture a crack in koreas sweethearts perfect persona on camera
- L doesnt do it because hes a truth chaser or whatever he simply enjoys watching light crack. and to have him crack on love tv would be to Win. light catches onto the game very quickly

Light then brought the sizable bite of cake to his mouth, his eyes never leaving L’s as he opens his mouth and takes the bite. L watched him, enraptured- only Light could make something as simple as eating look elegant. He watched as Light’s jaw moved rhythmically before his eyes were drawn down to his long, pretty throat as he swallowed.
Once he was done swallowing, Light smiled. His expression was smug and taunting, but the effect was less impactful with the slight blush tinging his cheeks. “There. Are you happy now, you absolute nightmare?”
Lawlight kitties!! Cat!Light is always hunting mice to give to cat!L because his love language is violence (much like his human counterpart) even though L is clearly not amused -_- He also never is able to catch Light in the act and it drives him insane lol
Light is a very refined and sleek Abyssinian and L is a scrunkly black cat that was found in the dumpster :3
!! I do not support JKR, which is why I enjoy Harry Potter exclusively through fan content and other means that don't put any more money in her pockets !!
That being said, this idea has been kicking around in the back of my head for months.
I'm honestly surprised almost nobody has done this crossover. I looked it up and there's maybe 7 or 8 fanfics and 12 pieces of fanart on all of tumblr, deviantart, fanfiction.net, and ao3 in total that combine Death Note and Harry Potter. It seems like it should be a more popular AU considering the overlap in time period and target demographic.
Alright, now here are some headcanons:
Light:
5th year
Was supposed to go to Slytherin, but convinced the sorting hat to put him in Gryffindor instead (that's where his father went, after all)
Gryffindor's token Evil Friend™
Wants to eliminate the death eaters and all dark wizards by any means necessary (as well as anyone who looks at him funny)
Is against unforgivable curses except when he uses them, because he totally has good reasons you guys
Nearly was able to get all three deathly hallows for himself
Avada kedavra avada kedavra avada kedavra
Good at persuasion, memory charms, and making polyjuice potion
Keeps killing so many others who are also trying to fight Voldemort for not being willing to murder as much as he is
Created the Death Note himself so he wouldn't have to keep spamming avada kedavra
L:
7th year
The sorting hat had a hard time deciding, but eventually picked Ravenclaw
He was disappointed (he wanted to be in Hufflepuff for the snacks)
Master of mind-reading, invisibility, divination
Possible werewolf
kept breaking the dress code by "forgetting" his socks, sweater, and shoes so he mastered illusion spells solely for the purpose of cloaking it look like he was wearing the uniform correctly and not getting in trouble
frequently uses duplication charms on cake so he can eat more of it without eating more calories
Doesn't talk to anyone but somehow knows all their secrets (he was spying on them using an invisibility cloak, crystal ball, etc)
His parents are unknown and dead so nobody knows how to be blood-racist to him
Lawlight:
L and Light constantly try to one up each other at wizard chess supposedly to show their superiority but really it's to impress each other
L got his hands on an invisibility cloak so he could follow Light around and spy on him but Light used the marauders map to figure out that L was following him
they won't admit their feelings for each other
Light started dating Misa (Hufflepuff) to beat the gay allegations but she realized what he was doing and decided to slip him a love potion to force him to love her back. L was the only person who noticed and begrudgingly decided to help Light by reporting her. Light confessed his feelings for L after that.
lawlight in a high school theatre au because it's my favorite au. :33
light's one of the main leads and L is just a guy who works tech backstage. the other main lead/love interest of the play is misa amane and light can't stand working with her, so he pulls somebody else to help him practice. however, the rest of the cast doesn't want to memorize extra lines, and the only person on crew who knows the full play by heart is some ratty guy holed up backstage. light takes his chances on the rat.
maybe misa gets sick before the show and L actually does have to perform with light. iunno lolz. i'm not that great at writing, i just imagine silly scenarios at 12 am instead of sleeping.

"Our game has come to a draw, hasn’t it?” Light asks, but he already knows the answer; he always has, but asking the question made it real. He could no longer hide in the quiet comfort of inner doubt that hung in the place of a solidified answer. The flimsy moment of hopeful delusion is over. This is real. This is it. There are no more moves to make. No checkmate to be found. Just two men, sitting on a bench, coming to terms with the reality that their time together is over.
They sit in silence, the question weighing heavily in the air, seeming to crush them both as neither says another word. Seconds go by and feel like years. Water no longer drips from the roof of the bus stop station, and the buzzing neon lights of the route schedule sign seem to pause, leaving the two in the hollow silence of the wind.
“Yeah, it has.” L breathes, wishing the wind could take the sound of his response away in its path and leave them in the peace of their fantasy. But it didn’t. It never seems to.
The answer could change nothing about their knowledge. They both knew it was over. The situation, however, was irreparably changed.
The air sparked with the fate of the moment, with the long pent up confession that would follow the response that doomed them both to reality.
“Do you know what?” Words softly break the quiet moment. Light hesitates to continue, turning to face his partner. “The worst part of all this… the worst part is that I love you. God, I hate it, but I love you.” He knows that he’s wrong, that his love is wrong, that he should be ashamed, but he can’t look away from him. He can’t turn away for fear that if he turned back, his love would be gone to him forever.
He’s not supposed to love the man who is meant to catch him and condemn him for his actions. His love should be reserved for someone who agrees with him, who melds with his opinions and actions, but he can’t choose who to love no matter how hard he tries. He tried to love her, but he couldn’t. Lord knows he tried, and he’s afraid that the lord knows about this too.
L pauses for a moment. He doesn’t know what to say. He should, he knows he should. He’s always so prepared, always one step ahead, always ready for anything. Anything but love. He moves to try to speak, to say something, to find one more move in this impossible draw, but he’s interrupted before he can even begin.
“No, L. Please, just let that sit for a minute.” He knows if he doesn’t say this all now, it’ll be too late. This is his one chance. Not for a happy ending, he knows not to hope for that, but to at least tell someone of his love, to let it be out there, to let it be real.
“I love you.” The two detectives sit in silence as the wind sings in an air of fate. It sings of would-been’s and will-be’s. It sings of love and loss and the way the two dance as an inseparable pair.
The silence is too full for another word, so the two just sit and listen to the water drip, and the lights buzz, and the wind sing. Each sound rings with the words ‘I love you”.
When the silence is quiet again, and the echo of the words dies down, L turns to Light.
“It’ll pass.” Light can only laugh.
He takes Light’s hand in his, mourning a love never to be lived, and intertwining their fingers. Their wind chilled fingers melds into one mass through the field of burning tears in their eyes, and there is nothing left to be done.
They pause for their final, infinite moment before L slowly separates his hand from Light’s before slowly bringing his legs beneath him. He takes a few steps away, each echoing his words as his boots step into shallow puddles on damp concrete.
‘It’ll pass… It’ll pass… It’ll pass…’
“I’m leaving the case. It’s time for me to move on, and I hope you can do the same.” L’s words drip with finality as he begins to walk into the darkness down the street, his shoes still echoing the words.
It’s okay. Light knows those words are a lie anyway. Love never passes, it just changes. It changes into hate, grief, pain, memory, but it’s always there, and it was always love.
L turns back to the bus stop one last time, to face his lover one last time. “I love you too.” He says quietly, only this time, the wind does carry his words. His lover nods and L turns, resigning from their stalemated game, and from Light’s life.
“Checkmate.” Light whispers to himself, knowing exactly what to do next. L may have resigned his king, but by no means did Light have to take it. He wants the game to go on and by God, that game will go on.
He takes the Death Note out of the inner pocket of his coat, its black cover becoming spotted with raindrops as a light rain starts to pick up. Light smiles, tears out one page, and throws the rest of the book in the bus stop trash bin. After all, there’s only one more name he needs to write. He folds the final page into a neat square and tucks it back into his pocket, beginning to walk down the street away from the bus stop, and away from his lover.
Two different paths will always have the same outcome if one is determined enough. It will never end like this. Love will never pass, and even if it would, do you really think Light would let it?
