a common thing i see in the types of lawlight fic i gravitate towards is that in the yotsuba arc, l is in some sense only still interested in light because parts of his pre-amnesia self still poke through, or that he knows light at least retains the capacity to be like that, and it's not that i don't like that take. but i also like the kind of inverse where it's not that yotsuba light being a far more normal guy is what makes this version of light the one he can develop more complex feelings for, but that youtsuba light constantly fights him and tells him no. pre-yotsuba, light is very careful to try and maintain his cover in no small part by making himself... not deferent, but often kind of pleasing, and not-too-suspiciously-antagonistic towards l. he goes so far as to be like 'you should lock me up! i will do whatever you say to prove my innocence!' and is very careful to never push too hard lest it seem as though he is defensive. he is operating on the knowledge he is guilty and is trying to look less so.

and then once light loses his memories, he loses much of that motivation! he now has reason to really believe he is not kira, and feel like he has nothing to hide that way. he goes from asking to be locked up to demanding to be let out despite it having been his idea to begin with, and this marks his shift in attitude for the coming arc. it's not light-as-kira who starts an honest to god fight with l, it's yotsuba light. l being abstractly impressed by light when he's working as kira but ultimately not much more, and then it's when an amnesiac light sure he has nothing to hide starts treating him like someone he can really fight with that l starts to, unfortunately. like him on some level. this is pretty tied to my sense that at least as long as he's been active as l, there is a tendency towards the people he is in contact with for any length of time to simply defer to and enable him no matter what. he's in charge, and people find use in him so long as he fulfils his role and function, and anything he does that inconveniences them or weirds them out or even repulses them gets viewed through the lens of 'as long as he gets results'. (points at the seeming implication watari was his guardian for some time previously. points at l's behaviour. etc.)

l finds kira interesting and an intellectual challenge. but yotsuba light is someone who will start a petty fight and challenge l on his behaviour and push him in very different ways, ones that could have much more to do with him as a person. i think that is an interesting place to start from when it comes to a lawlight dynamic.

firstly. i am obligated to say @bazpango hockey au -- Forty Seconds On The Clock. they've altered my brain chemistry so bad. i have NEVER cared more about sports in my life up until i read that fic do you understand.

i've recommended this before on some other post, but Even Closer by @analyticalnonsense has a special place in my heart. smut fic that gets really emotional and it is so damn good. written beautifully.

Little Monster by @kiras-law is an incredible short and sweet fic ANDI WAS HONORED TO KNOW IT WAS ABOUT SOME DOODLE I MADE?? GAAAH I LOVEIT ITS SO ADORABLE

Venus Rising by @catboymettaton was a death note fic that got me shockingly very emotional lollzzz, really cool analysis of lawlight. i have vivid memories of spamming my boyfriend about how unexpectedly awesome this silly crack fic was.

Freak by Bigal24601 is a cute fic i haven't finished yet, it's really fluffy and a little angsty and overall very fun <33

those are all my death note fic recs -- below are some non-death-note fics that i really adore <3

i do know now that a lot of death note fans are also into be more chill, so one fic that i read wayyy back and came across again a few months ago is Stammer by an anonymous writer. i haven't read it in a while and i still need to finish it (it's super long fic) but i remember loving every minute of it. it was recommended by my cool friend @awesomejedie if i remember correctly and i have never forgotten it. it is soso neat <33

i'm pretty sure most of the people who follow me are not in the homestuck fandom, but i adore Bette Davis Eyes by Le_Vi. that shit hits wayyy close to home in all the worst and best ways. makes me cry so much.

also not sure if anyone is into stranger things??? but Keep It Steady, Eddie by outofmygourd is another long time favorite. don't remember much, but i loved it so much that i'm pretty sure i bought a ring that had a similar description to one in the fic? i really liked it.

Rewatching death note after TEN YEARS with some friends and we are horribly susceptible to theorizing animation student au headcanons for like every piece of media that has our attention so here’s their meet the artists with some stats :3 ridiculously self-indulgent + catered to our own personal experiences of being in cartoon school. How fleshed out is this??? Not very. But it’s fun (tried drawing them kinda sorta how they’d maybe draw if they were actually like people) (I’d love to put the music they listen to and movies they like but tbh idk light especially does not strike me as someone who listens to music for fun so they’re a bit minimal). Also thing to note I know the personality-database site says light is an entj instead of i which while it makes sense we motioned that he’s a bit more meticulous and while of course he can do social situations he doesn’t seek them out per se nor get fulfilment from them BUT BOTH TYPES ARE STILL GOOD

Now you may be asking how does the actual plot of death note translate into this. Well you see they are in their 3rd year ryuk is light’s goth alt roommate who shows him this cool site called twitter dot com and light IMMEDIATELY starts anonymously cyberbullying people notably school peers and it gets so bad the faculty has to get involved and they also need to bring in this mysterious transfer student from England who gets put into the same 3rd year film group as light to further investigate suspicions and also has a twitter handle/acc that has been actively challenging light’s + has like a gazillion followers. Also yeah they fall in love and stuff
