The Effects Of Temperature On Rifle Shooting

If you’ve read up on sniper ballistics or fired one yourself from our shooting range Los Angeles, you’ve probably heard that for every temperature change of 20 degrees, adjust 1 MOA to make up for ballistic change. And because you can find that idea in just about any sniper manual, it’s pretty much accepted as fact. However, we tend to think this might be a specious claim.

Actually, technically it may be true, however, only at distances further than any police sniper shot in recorded history. This erroneous information can be dangerous for police because it informs snipers to start changing sights when actually it is not necessary. In fact, it actually makes snipers create an incorrect firing solution. But because it is so widely accepted, it is taken as truth.

This rule has actually been proven wrong by several field tests under a variety of temperatures. As snipers, the most it is important to test under a variety of circumstances so when it really matters, you are prepared. It is important to go out into the field and make sure you know what your rifle can do.

The question remains, “how is projectile velocity affected by the temperature of the propellant?” In fact, there are two factors that temperature may affect: external ballistics and internal ballistics. Internally, higher temperature causes powder to burn quicker, which creates more pressure and velocity. Externally, cold air is denser than hot air, thus, cold air creates more drag on the bullet, which slows the velocity. As a bullet slows, its drop rate increases.

The difficulty lies in that while the 1 MOA per 20-degree change is correct for long distances, most law enforcement snipers new shoot past 200 yards, and even military shots are within 500 yards.

The New Rule

We have a very concise suggestion that simplifies this whole dilemma. The new rule is this: Any sniping under 500 yards, you should ignore temperature. Any sniping beyond 500 yards refer to the original rules set forth in sniper school.

The Big DO NOTs Of Gun Cleaning

One of the big reasons that we advocate so heavily for our second amendment rights is for the right to protect our loved ones and ourselves. Having a gun but not being able to use it in a time of need would completely defeat that purpose which is why it is so important to keep your gun clean. A dirty gun leads to malfunctions, misfires, or jams. While we have already told you how to clean your gun, we want to take a minute to give the DO NOTs of gun cleaning. Never Use These To Clean Your Firearms 

Never use gasoline or kerosene to clean your guns, as they are extremely dangerous and highly flammable. On top of being a fire hazard, they can damage the metal finish on your gun. The use of any strong strippers and solvents is also not recommended for any metal parts or plastic or wooden stock parts.

In addition, while hot water and detergents work on greasy dishes, do not, under any circumstances use them to clean your guns. They can cause rusting of any metals parts. Soaking wooden stocks in hot water for any extent of time will warp them. 

Quick List Of Major Gun Cleaning Don’ts

Never assume your gun is unloaded. Check and check again.

Do not consume alcohol, prescription or over-the-counter drugs before or during the cleaning process.

Do not leave a firearm cocked and unattended in the cleaning area

Never force parts back together. If you find they aren’t fitting properly, disassemble your gun and adjust for proper fit.

Do not over or under lubricate. Proper lubrication on the rails, slide, barrel, or internal parts is absolutely necessary.

Report on President Trump’s Possibility of Easing US Gun Sales Overseas Triggers Gun Stocks to Surge

Gun stocks such as American Outdoors Brands and Ruger both closed with more than 10% increases in response to a Reuters report on the Trump administration allegedly preparing to adjust regulations for U.S. gun sales overseas. This report speculates the possibility of Trump making it easier for gun manufacturers in the U.S. to sell and export small arms to foreign countries, resulting in positive gains for several gun company stocks. Sturm Ruger’s stock closed with a 13.7 percent gain, having its highest mark since early August this year, and American Outdoor Brands closed with a 10.1 percent gain, their best day since last year in November. Although gun sales have decreased nationally in response to the current administration’s favor of gun rights and leniency on gun control, opportunities for expanding business for gun company sales into foreign markets has provoked positive results for gun stocks. Changes

A plan of altering the regulation of international non-military sales of firearms from the security-based State Department to the trade-based Commerce Department is currently underway, according to four officials. Aides to President Trump are currently working on the plan and a draft of new rules could be given to the White House budget office for approval in a matter of days. These new alterations can be put into place without the need of congressional approval and become accessible to the public this fall. They also noted that a periodic time of public discourse would lead to a possible announcement and fulfillment by as early as next year. 

Gun Sales

As noted earlier, gun sales have dropped following Trump’s election victory from assurances of lighter regulations on gun ownership and usage. For instance, Vista and American Outdoor Brands’ sales have fallen more than 40 percent since Election Day, and Sturm Ruger 23 percent down. The former administration of President Obama and his consistent influence on gun control provoked record high gun sales, as the public feared for losing their gun rights from tighter regulations. California Gun Owners Bypass Registration for AR-15s

Firearm owners in California endure strict legislation limiting their constitutional right to bear arms. Following the state government redefining what an assault rifle is, and what features are illegal based on those new definitions, AR-15 owners face a dilemma of either going featureless to legally keep their carbine rifles, or succumb to registration. Multiple featureless ideas and combinations have been created by gun companies and owners to remain compliant, as assault rifle registration forms require very detailed and specific information about these firearms. Although the fear of giving up personal information has gun owners scrambling to come up with an alternative, the variety of featureless builds and options available allow them to legally keep their rifles without any governmental interference. Register or Retrofit

The registration of so-called ‘assault weapons’ is now much more intrusive and specific as to what information needs to be provided. In the past, the only thing gun owners had to disclose was a list of serial numbers of their firearms which were considered assault rifles. Today, much more information is asked including receipts to show where the firearm was originally purchased, numerous pictures of the firearm, and others. The information must all be submitted via website technology rather than mobile devices, further complicating the process. To circumvent all this, California gun owners retrofit their rifles as ‘featureless models,’ by removing the collapsible/telescopic stock, pistol grip, and flash suppressor.

Demand

Gunmakers and owners have concurred that if these laws weren’t passed in California, demand for firearms would have fallen like it already has across the rest of the country. Demand for guns skyrocketed during the Obama administration amidst fears of gun control being implemented after multiple mass shootings over the years. Though demand has declined after last fall’s election, legislators in gun-restrictive states have increased it in those states since gun owners are now compelled to make some cosmetic changes to their guns, and manufacturers are now creating featureless AR-15s to be sold.

Outlawing the AR-15’s ‘bullet button’ is the main focus of California’s gun legislation, a feature designed to slow down the time it takes to reload as it requires a tool to be inserted into the button to eject magazines. California’s Upcoming Background Checks for Ammunition

Start saving up and stocking up, California gun lovers.  Due to California’s Proposition 63, any individual who wants to purchase ammunition will first be required to obtain a permit.  It will then be the sellers’ legal duty to check this permit before any transaction is completed.  To put more salt into the wound, California residents will no longer be able to mail order their ammunition either. Stop by our Los Angeles shooting range’s pro shop to stock up as much as you can before the law goes into effect. 

Legal Outline of Proposition 63

During July 2016, California implemented certain regulations to further control ammunition sales.  If any individual or business would like to sell ammunition, they must receive a one-year certification from the California Department of Justice.  In addition to this license, the DOJ requires that sellers, including our Los Angeles shooting range, conduct background checks for their purchasers. Since the initial proposal, there have been a few provisions but we will not cover them in great detail.  These are the main points you need to know.

State Law Changes

Proposition 63 will include all of the regulations previously mentioned. Additionally, this measure abolishes numerous exemptions to the large-capacity magazine ban and amplifies the punishment for possessing them. Proposition 63 has also sanctioned a court process that will make it more difficult for prohibited individuals to acquire firearms.  

Disputing Proposition 63    

On May 17, 2017, a few San Diego residents and members of the California Rifle & Pistol Association commenced a lawsuit against Southern California’s Attorney General - Xavier Becerra. They believed that Proposition 63 violated various aspects of the Second Amendment.  This is due to the Penal Code Section 32310.  This section attempted to make the possession of large-capacity magazine a misdemeanor.  Additionally, residents who owned large-capacity magazine were supposed to dispose them, sell them, or hand them off to a legal law enforcement agency. This was supposed to go into effect on July 1, 2017, but Judge Benitez formulated a preliminary injunction.  He believed that this type of burden was in direct violation of the Second Amendment, and thus, the Constitution.    

Purchasing Ammo from Out-of-State

California residents are not allowed to purchase ammunition from another state unless it is first delivered to an authorized dealer.  In addition, California residents are prohibited from personally transporting out-of-state ammunition into California.  They must first have it inspected by an authorized dealer like our Los Angeles shooting range.  Although this mandate was supposed to take effect in July 2019, the start date has been pushed to January 2018.  

Action Plan

We can only imagine that ammunition sales competition will decrease due to Proposition 63.  If this is the case, then prices will likely increase, and that’s prior to California’s ridiculous sales tax rate.  Our Long Angeles shooting range will do our absolute best to maintain our low price reputation, but our best advice would be to stock up now.  If you have the ability to purchase ammunition for future use, you should go ahead and do so.  Purchasing in bulk month-by-month would be a wise decision too.  You just have to remember that the new regulations transpire this coming year.    

If you have one firearm or different firearms that shoot the same caliber, your decision is not that difficult.  However, if you have an array of firearms with different caliber sizes, predict how often you will use each one.  From there you can allocate your resources and divide your ammunition purchases accordingly.  

How Many Rounds to Buy

From our point of view, you can never have too much ammunition, but that’s not always realistic thinking.  In order to determine how much ammunition you need, you must first take into account how many calibers you need.  Some may be interchangeable.  From there you must consider how big your magazines are and how often you’re going to use each firearm, whether it’s for practice shooting, hunting, or any other scenario.  When you examine your needs and future requirements, you’ll be able to formulate a better plan.  This will help you save money and be prepared for these future regulations.

Target Pistols vs. Combat Pistols

If your handgun is either a target gun or combat gun, target practice will improve your shooting technique for when you need it the most. Finding the right handgun for the right purpose can be challenging with all of their features and different designs, which is why some are more suitable for target practice and others for combat. Although certain features such as adjustable sights, light trigger actions, and light trigger disconnects are popular among target shooters, they can become ineffective and hinder one’s technique in combat situations if the wrong handgun is used in the wrong setting. If, however, you live in Los Angeles’ South Bay area, finding a Long Beach shooting range can be difficult but LAX Firing Range is closer than you think.

Function Over Form

Accuracy can compensate for a lack of power, but not vice versa. During a gunfight, marksmanship is crucial, but shooting in the smallest groups possible isn’t necessary. An even amount of rigor and speed is essential in combat training because the real risk resides in keeping your cool in a dire situation to ensure you hit your targets swiftly and effectively. The key is to hit your target(s) hard and fast and make each shot count. Though many target features found on handguns can make target practice easier, they should be avoided for combat settings and the discrepancies between combat and target handguns should be made clear.

Target Guns

Target guns are designed with easy maneuverability, high profile sights, and light trigger pulls to name a few. Some even have a grip shape that makes it easy to control and ambidextrous during slow firing and for left or right-handed shooters, respectively. The trigger also tends to be heavier than a combat gun, to reduce the risk of improper shooting.

Combat Guns

In contrast, combat guns have decent sights which have a reduced risk of snagging while the user draws. They aren’t as clear and noticeable as target gun sights, but their shape and design enable the handgun to be aimed properly and reduce risks of mismanagement. Their triggers are noticeably lighter which improves marksmanship and shortens the trigger reset, but not to the extent of being at risk of improper or premature shooting during critical moments.

Sights

High profile sights may seem attractive to handguns, but the key is to have sights that are visible. Rather than having the largest, most colorful, and adjustable sights possible, the secret in tactical settings is that adjustable or high profile sights are less sturdy. Fixed sights that are easy to see, like the ones found on a CZ 75 pistol or Springfield Mil Spec bring the best results.

Trigger

Depending on what your pistol will be used for the most, the proper trigger reset should be set for such shooting. Target pistols should have 5 pounds of pressure or higher to prevent unintended discharge, and combat pistols should have lighter trigger pulls and more rapid resets. Anything less than a 4-pound disconnect is asking for trouble on pistols used for defense and should be avoided. Ideally, the action which came with the gun when new is best, making adjustable triggers inadequate.

Components

There are two different hands used when firing a handgun; one is the firing hand, and the other is the support hand. Training to shoot a handgun to make both hands ambidextrous enables the shooter to use either hand if one gets injured during combat. Grip modifications that are only accessible by one hand reduce the handgun’s efficiency. Anything that restricts a handgun’s ability to fire, reload, and function properly should be avoided. For instance, slide locks on most handguns have a tendency of being inadequate. Some designs can interfere with the shooting hand during recoil, which can result in the firing hand contacting the slide lock, thus locking open the pistol – a fatal mistake nobody wants to face. So if your pistol has any superfluous modifications or characteristics that restrict your control over the firearm, they must be discarded.

Should You Add a Firearm to Your Outdoor Packing List?

If you are a firearm enthusiast, activities such as hiking, hunting and other outdoor activities may peak your interest.  Those of us here at the shooting range by Long Beach enjoy these activities because there is something calming and revitalizing about being out in the wilderness. Many people tend to carry a firearm with them when they are on these trips and that may not be a comforting thought for some. Whether you are in support of carrying a sidearm into the great outdoors or not, we are not here to stir the pot. This issue has already been an enduring debate throughout the years so we would like present valid points from both sides and allow you to decide what is the better option.

Argument in Support of Carrying a Firearm:

People in the Woods are Not Always Friendly

If you decide to go hiking, fishing, hunting, or camping in an extremely secluded and rural area, you may run into some unpleasant people.  We are not trying to stereotype, but it’s true!  They could potentially be hiding from the law or participating in some illegal activities.  Whatever the reason may be, they will be armed more often than not. Therefore, even if they are better armed than you, it’s better to have something to defend yourself rather than having nothing at all. Now we’re not saying that this type of situation will arise every time you go out into the wilderness, but it is a potential threat. 

You Can Protect Yourself From Wildlife

A good majority of people support carrying a firearm into the wilderness because it can protect you from creepy creatures other than humans. Depending on where you decide to go, bear, wolves, or mountain lions may very well be present.  We’re not saying that a sidearm will have the ability to completely stop these sorts of animals but it could at least deter them from pursuing you.  

Handguns are Beneficial for Survival

This argument may seem self-explanatory since we’ve already touched upon different ways a firearm could keep you safe.  However, a gun can be utilized for other purposes unrelated to self-defense.  For instance, let’s imagine that you have suffered an injury in the middle of nowhere and you are no longer able to travel great distances.  If you fire off a gunshot during a timely portion of the day, it could assist a search party in their efforts to find you.

Instills Fear into Others

Remember how we mentioned that there are not always nice people in the great outdoors?  Well, let’s try to put ourselves in someone else’s shoes. If you happen to cross paths with other outdoor adventurers and they see you carrying an unconcealed sidearm, they may consider you a bad person.

May Make the Woods More Dangerous

Imagine that no one was able to carry a firearm outdoors.  Now think about what it would be like if everyone outdoors had a gun on them. We’re not saying that this will ever be the case but the sheer amount of firearms in the wilderness could make it a more dangerous place to be, especially if they’re in the hands of the wrong people.  

False Feeling of Protection

Firearms are favorable for self-defense but that should never allow you to let your guard down. Unfortunately, many people do because they start feeling invincible.

Recent Surveys Find 1 in 5 Americans Attain Guns Without Background Checks

Researchers from Northeastern University and Harvard University have recently discovered that the number of Americans who were able to obtain guns without undertaking a background check has decreased substantially. For many years, estimations supported the claim that about 40% of American gun owners obtained their firearms without prior screenings.  This was based on extrapolated statistics from an analysis in the year 1994, and numerous gun rights activists have argued that this statistic is irrelevant and outdated.  

The most recent survey conducted by Northeastern and Harvard researchers may support this claim.  The findings that have been issued in the Annals of Internal Medicine show that a mere 22% of gun sales were processed without a background check. The study also found that states that mandated background checks, like California, reduced the amount of personal gun sales conducted without background checks compared to states that did not have a required law. This shows that efforts to increase screenings on the local level have been successful, but the growth of background screenings has still been a major controversy in the gun regulation debate.

The massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary that unfortunately took place in 2012 sparked the discussion among politicians once more. Former President Obama and the Democratic Party stood by their claims that 40% of Americans still obtained guns without going through a screening process.  However, Phil Cook, a diligent gun law researcher, thinks that supporting the 22% statistic may actually be advantageous.  Although this may seem counterintuitive, in his opinion, it may make a universal background check seem cheaper and more attainable to implement.  

Whichever statistic you may prefer to agree with, it is still crucial to realize that there are holes in the system.  According to the Donald Trump, an NRA ally and pro-gun rights advocate, “we need to fix that system that we have”.  Federal background checks have reduced the amount of gun transactions by 2.4 million since 1994, but they do not look at sales between private parties. Therefore, according to Joseph Vince, the laws are not ineffective; they’re just weak.  

During the past 20 years, 19 states have begun to implement regulations on private gun transactions. While research shows that this has reduced the amount of private transactions without background checks to 26%, it confirms that the issue is still relevant.  Approximately 77% of gun owners were able to obtain their firearms from friends or acquaintances without a background check, and 45% made purchases online without being screened.  So even though gun control laws are aiding the situation, Matt Miller, an instructor at Northeastern, reminds us all that we cannot lose sight of the fact that there are still millions of people every year who are getting guns without screenings, whether it is through friends, family, or acquaintances.  Additionally, the study showed that, in recent years, those who owned guns were purchasing their firearms through various outlets, like the Long Beach shooting range, rather than receiving them as gifts.  This statistic has risen from 60% to 80% within the past few years.  

With all of these statistics, you have to analyze them with a grain of salt. Surveys are self-reported so there may be biases and limitations involved.  For instance, if someone purchased their gun five years ago, they may not remember if they were screened our not.  Therefore, since these surveys are primarily based on memory, the recent data may be the most accurate, and overall, they show that gun control is trending in the right direction.

Californians Still Having Trouble Registering Assault Weapons

Responsible gun owners in California are trying to abide by the onslaught of new California gun laws but they are having trouble when they attempt to register their assault weapons.

Registering Assault Weapons In California 

On January 1, one of the new gun control laws that went into effect included expanding the definition of assault weapon. Semiautomatic pistols that don’t have a fixed magazine and semiautomatic centerfire rifles are now included on that list and individuals are no long able to purchase those weapons. If you already own one of those they must be registered by January 1, 2018. 

Gun Owners Can Not Register Their Assault Weapons 

The registration website has yet to work. Instead of the easy process that was promised, gun owners are met with an error message. This is causing a lot of anxiety and frustration amongst those trying to be law-abiding gun owners. Many have been trying to register their weapons for months and are worried that it will be an even bigger mess when the deadline hits and the problem still exists.

Voicing Their Frustration

Responsible gun owners are doing their best to stay within the law despite it impeding on their right to bear arms. But, as we enter into June, nothing has gone according to plan and they are left not knowing what to do. The procedure for this current registration requirement should be easy since there is one already in existence from the last assault weapon ban. If assault weapon owners cannot register their firearm they could face severe penalties.

More Proposed Gun Control Legislation in California

SB 497, a bill aiming to extend the restriction of California residents to one gun per month on ALL guns, has advanced to the Senate Appropriations Committee. Whatever the public safety concerns are, our shooting range in the Long Beach and LA area doesn’t think that this does anything to improve public safety.

Under existing California law, residents are already restricted to one handgun a month. SB 497 extends that restriction to encompass all guns. Similar legislation was vetoed in 2016 by Governor Brown; he didn’t believe that the additional constraint was necessary.

It has become clear to us that this piece of legislation is just another unnecessary obstacle placed in front of those exercising their rights. It does nothing to diminish criminal firearm trafficking or misuse.  Criminals use illicit means to acquire weapons and will continue to ignore California’s needlessly strict laws, including this one. 

Assembly Floor: AB 7

AB 7 are up for final vote on the Assembly floor.  AB 7 aims to extend the restriction on open carry of an unloaded firearm in public places or on public streets, the keyword in this being unloaded.  Again, we have another piece of legislation that aims to criminalize law-abiding citizens simply exercising their rights while making no actual effect at cracking down on the actual criminals.

Could Concealed Carry Laws Change In California Under Gorsuch?

If the US Supreme Court, including newly appointed Judge Gorsuch, decides to hear the Peruta v. California case then you could potentially see changes coming to California’s concealed carry laws. LAX Firing Range, a Los Angeles shooting range, has taken a close look at what it could all mean.

California’s Current Concealed Carry Law

Whether or not California residents can obtain a concealed carry permit is dependent upon the county’s sheriff’s office, making it one of nine “may-issue” states. In most states, law enforcement has no say in whether or not a person is granted a permit, so long as the permit requirements are met.

In San Diego County, where the case originated, says that a permit will only be issued if the applicant meets a particular set of requirements. The requirements are: must demonstrate a good cause in wanting a permit, demonstrates upstanding moral character, and must provide proof of residency in that county.

Peruta v. California

Judge Gorsuch, along with other Justices will decide on April 25th whether or not they will hear Mr. Peruta’s legal challenge against San Diego’s current concealed carry permit requirements. He argues that the Constitution’s Second Amendment protects his right as a citizen to carry a firearm for self-defense purposes in public and that the “good cause” condition is too restrictive. Apparently, fearing for one's safety is not a good enough reason and allows law enforcement too much power in preventing private citizens from carrying.

The Supreme Court With Gorsuch

There is a good chance that it will pass if heard by the Supreme Court now that originalist Gorsuch has been added to the lineup. Gorsuch strictly adheres to the Constitution, including its Second Amendment clause, which allows private citizens the right to bear arms. The Right now has a 5-4 majority in the court which will make Gorsuch the deciding factor in this, and many upcoming cases.

Gun Suppressor Bill Could Bring Big Changes

Republican lawmakers are looking to alleviate restrictions that exist on gun suppressors. Being one of the leading shooting ranges in the Long Beach and Los Angeles areas we want to keep you informed about potential changes to gun laws, including the Hearing Protection Act of 2017. 

What Is A Gun Silencer, Actually 

Silencers, commonly referred to as suppressors, are a cylinder shaped muffler that attaches to the end of your gun barrel to minimize the sound of a gunshot. Movies and TV shows often make it seem as though a silencer completely muffles the sound of a gunshot when in reality they are much louder. A suppressor in real life sounds more like the slamming of a car door.

Silencers Originally Regulated In 1934 

Gun suppressors regulations were introduced during the prohibition era when gangsters were intent on making their mark. Even though the reign of the Al Capone gangsters is long over, gun advocates fear that silencers will still be used to suppress the sound of a gunshot, thus, eliminating any warning sound to alert those nearby.  

Silencers are legal in 42 states but undergo meticulous federal regulations that are more rigorous than that required for most guns. Along with FBI checks, those wishing to purchase a silencer must also pay a $200 tax and submit photos and fingerprints. While background checks for a gun can take mere minutes, silencer approval can take upwards of nine months. 

What Does The Hearing Protection Act of 2017 Propose 

The Hearing Protection Act aims to create another means of protecting a shooter's hearing. In order to do so, it proposes that silencers have the same regulations as shotguns and rifles. If the new bill passes those wishing to buy silencers will no longer have to abide by the extra layers of regulations required for the past 80 years, and they will no longer have to pay the current $200 tax. The bill will also remove the current classification for silencers which will expedite the purchasing process.

On Or Off Body Carry – Which Should You Choose

Becoming a concealed carry citizen (CCW) you will find yourself asking three questions every morning.  The first is what should you wear? How will you carry? And, where will you be going? You will then be able to decide how you should wear your firearm, on body or off body? The decision you make will determine the type of gear and training necessary.

 The On Body Argument

 You can conceal your firearm anywhere from your ankles to your armpits.

Keeping your weapon close means that you can draw it quicker with the correct setup.

You will know where you gun is at all times, which is especially necessary when children are in the area.

Concealed carry bags can be easy to spot. They tend to have heavier straps, many compartments, and zippers.

You will never have to wonder where your gun is in your bag. If you have it secured on your body, you know exactly where it is and will never have to frantically search for it.

A bag or purse can be easily ripped from your possession.

As a side note, self defense experts advise against wearing your gun in a back holster since a robber or rapist will ideally want to put you on your back.

The Off Body Argument

Carrying off body doesn’t mean you have to wear a frumpish fanny pack like your granddad. There are plenty of attractive options for both men and women should you decide to carry off body.

Off body carry allows you to carry a larger firearm and caliber. Be sure you are comfortable with the weight of a heavier firearm as it could mean a rough day if you aren’t.

Tight fitting fabrics, like athletic clothing or trendier outfits, will make it difficult to carry on body. This may require you to use a small pack, or some other type of carry bag.

Women tend to encounter more issues when it comes to on body carry. Curves, pregnant bellies or disabilities can make it difficult to carry or draw a gun.

Also for women, wearing a dress can make it difficult to accommodate of an on body carry. The only type of holster appropriate with a dress is one between the legs and that can be awkward. There are CCW clutches that have hand straps to make it easies and more secure.

When in your vehicle a purse or briefcase can be set on the seat or floor next to you. There is no need for you to upholster and place your gun somewhere else – unless required by state.

Train For Your Chosen Method

Whatever method you decide on you need to be trained. Experts recommend dry-firing your firearm without ammunition so you know how to react and use your weapon.  Play the “what if” game. Imagine yourself in terrible situations and make sure that you are confident in handling your gun with your chosen method.

America Fights Back: Long Beach Burglar Shot and Killed

It always brings a little music to our ears when we hear stories about law-abiding citizens using their second amendment right to defend their safety and their homes.  This latest story comes right in our own back yard. LAX Firing Range, a local to Long Beach shooting range, brings you the details of the latest America Fights Back article.

At 5:16am on Monday, January 16th, police were called to a report of a shooting in a Long Beach neighborhood.  Upon arrival, they found the suspect who had been shot several times in various parts of the body.  The local fire department brought the suspect to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The resident spoke to investigators at the scene, it was determined that the man had shot a burglary suspect. He was released after several hours of questioning in which law enforcement officers concluded that his actions were within the bounds of the law.

Neighbors also reported hearing six or seven shots in the early hours of Monday morning, one witness described the home invader as a homeless man who had been seen frequently in the surrounding area leading up to the intrusion.

Police will continue to investigate the scene and gather evidence from potential witnesses before closing the case, but it seems pretty clear what happened in this one – bad guy breaks into home, good guy shoots bad guy, the end.

Guns Rights Groups Look to Trump to Repeal Social Security’s Role in Background Checks

With the inauguration of President-Elect Trump just a few days away, guns rights groups are already looking to the new administration to nix Social Security’s role in existing background checks.  LAX Firing Range, an indoor Los Angeles shooting range, shares the story:

The Obama administration has made some last-ditch efforts to revoke as many gun rights as they can.  The latest rule can be used to block thousands of benefit recipients from purchasing firearms.  Eric Pratt, the executive director of Gun Owners of America, said, “We’ve already made the request to the Trump administration to look at repealing this.”

Starting in December, the Social Security Administration has been submitting information on disability and Supplemental Security Income recipients to the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) if the government decides that they are mentally ill or unable to handle their affairs on their own.

While most gun control groups support the government’s efforts to keep guns out of the hands of dangerous people, however, they fear that the SSA rule might be using overly broad information to deny harmless, law abiding citizens from purchasing guns.

One concern cited in their report is about a similar program at the Department of Veteran affairs that has been reporting veterans who are unable to handle their finances to the background check system. “Now it will be the same premise with Social Security if grandpa has trouble paying the bills,” Pratt said.

Supporters of the new ruling insist that this new program is to be used as a puzzle piece in a larger push to keep firearms out of the hands of the mentally ill, but they seem to ignore the major, unconstitutional problems that come along with it.
