Every Tuesday night at 9pm EST there is an excellent twitter chat called #HipHopEd . Last night’s topic was, ‘What Is Hip Hop’s Role In The School To Prison Pipeline?’ I used this time to breakdown the connection between hip hop and private prisons, which fuel the School To Prison Pipeline.
While hip hop is not solely and directly responsible for the School To Prison Pipeline, it definitely plays a role as those who control what we listen to and see invest in private prisons.
CCA is the Corrections Corporation of America, they are the oldest & largest private prison company in the United States. Not only have they capitalized on the failed war on drugs by housing drug offenders, they also found a way to bring in new revenue by incarcerating undocumented immigrants.
GEO is the second largest private prison company in the U.S. and has facilities in the UK, Australia and south Africa.
When we dig into the financials, investments & shareholders of media conglomerates and private prisons, we begin to see some familiar names. Vanguard is one name that comes up frequently as their hands dip in both media interests AND private prisons. Not only is Vanguard the largest shareholder in CCA, they are also the largest shareholder in GEO. When you hold as much stock as Vanguard, it is easy to assume, and rightfully so, that there is enough power to decide what we see and hear on the radio and tv.
*I know you all are sticklers for wording, so let me say that filling the radio stations with music that glamorizes criminal lifestyles and drug use is only ONE of MANY ways to help fill prisons when crime rates are down & companies like CCA are requiring 90% occupancy*
As always, please don’t take anything that I blog on here for fact. These are my truths as I have researched for myself, now I urge you to do the same. I have posted some links to help get you started. Let’s continue to learn and educate ourselves and others so we can work collectively to dismantle the the prison industrial complex!

What if the only viable solution to Black people's problems is to leave the United States
How many yall ready, or even consider making that move?
And go where? Where is 40 Million ppl gonna go?
FYI, Africa is the big continent. Europe is the small one. We COULD just go back to Africa. There are, what, 150 countries there, and I am pretty sure Ghana invited us all back years ago, and Zimbabwe I hear is asking white people to gtfo.
We need to give up on reparations (reparations were already paid, we were NOT on the list) and we need to focus on REPATRIATION.
Seriously, I plan on having SONS and lemme tell ya, black boys don’t do so hot here in America trying to play the Eurocentric’s games….
Homey Going to Africa isn’t going to solve White Suppremecy. The average Ghanians don’t want 40 Million more ppl to occupy there land taking jobs. People in Zimbabwe ain’t asking for 40 million foreigners who don’t know the language and the culture to occupy there land. We ain’t from Zimbabwe or Ghana. We are almost 300 years removed from Africa at this point.
Like when/if we were to go to Africa how would we even build wealth? We will be immigrant and would either have to take on low wage jobs or illegal activity like selling drugs. At that point we might as well stay in America at that point
a decision like mass exodus from america would have to be a decision come to by both african americans here and whatever other country or continent we would relocate to (beit africa or otherwise). the above is correct. we are 300+ years removed from africa and are highly americanized. HIGHLY americanized. that’s a whole different culture over there and, like any other human being on earth regardless of race, if millions of people just came into their continent or country, they would get territorial and things would get ugly. there might even be shouts of “go back to your country” and ish like that which would be comical and sad. however the idea of leaving america for a better place and situation period is something i have thought a lot about but it’s not at all simple. i can even see a scenario where the united states work to levy sanctions against a country or continent that would work with us to make that happen because the modern slavery of african americans and blacks are a big part of the us economy. from the discriminatory low wages for high productivity all the way to the industrial prison system, america makes serious cake off of the systematic oppression of blacks and they are not going to just let all that money literally fly away.
This needs to be a serious conversation among all black people.
This is deep…
I made a post about this. Pay us what you owe and we’d be glad to leave this bitch and go elsewhere.
Why would we leave a country out ancestors built empty handed?
There’s a real conversation to be had about this because I’ve thought about this countless times
Most native-Africans don’t even want us back in Africa tbh
how do you know this? did you ask most africans? we honestly don’t need most africans approval, just the ones from which ever nations will fuck with our move.
This was worth reading, and I’ll comment later but a conversation worth having
she brought ‘em pencils.

“ My friend recorded the Cypher yesterday. Didn’t do the way I wanted to but can’t dwell on it. This years cypher definitely had a lot of great talent including my homies. Didn’t slug anyone specific, I was referencing 8 mile and tryna be funny. The people who got it, got it. Just like the references in the old cypher. All in all it was straight. I enjoy using these as a platform to show who and what I’m inspired by musically so it’s dope. It was also my birthday, and my mixtape was supposed to drop but now it’s scheduled for November. I’ll keep y'all updated. “
