Shelly Fossilian: Gardenview's Forgotten Main (and why she works!)
Recently, I've seen many posts on social media discussing Shelly and her characterization of being forgotten/ignored. Specifically, they seemed critical of this trait and thought Shelly would realistically not fit that role. "Kids love dinosaurs!" or "Shelly is too kind!" are repeated rebuttals. However, I disagree with this. In fact, I think Shelly is not only the perfect character for this archetype, but giving it to any other character would fall flat, and to say toons like Vee or Sprout would fulfill this role better is a severe misunderstanding of their current roles.
A common misconception is that Shelly is "the dinosaur toon." I hear this often: "Dinosaurs are popular with children, so wouldn't they love Shelly?"
Shelly is not the dinosaur toon, she's the dinosaur FACT toon. The distinction, while not seeming important, absolutely is.
Shelly's dialogue gives us a look into how she fills her role: she spits info at people in a way that doesn't get them invested.
She's repetitive, awkward, and unengaging. Even toons that show interest in her facts consistently end their interactions with Shelly impassively.
The phrase "a good teacher can make a boring subject fascinating" goes both ways. A teacher who fails to spark intrigue in their students will make any subject dull. Regardless of how much a kid loves dinosaurs, if Shelly can't engage with them properly, it means nothing.
This is best illustrated with Shelly's interaction with Toodles:
Shelly actually manages to capture her attention, but quickly squanders the opportunity when she scares her by accident. And this is Toodles - a naturally curious kid. It's very difficult to put her off learning/exploring, even when she's scared.
This is a problem unique to Shelly. The other mains have no problem capturing Toodles' attention, sometimes without even trying.
Even Vee, who is dismissive of her questions, is still pestered by her until she gets her answer.
And speaking of Vee, an abudent number of people think that she would be a better fit for the forgotten archetype than Shelly due to her jealousy toward Dandy and her blunt personality.
First of all, Vee has a rivalry with Dandy, one that is anything but one-sided. He doesn't like her either.
Vee's superiority over Dandy seems to come from an abundance of self-confidence, something she would not have if she was unpopular.
Secondly, Vee is more than just "blunt." She is also charismatic and captivating. Her gameshow is one of the most discussed parts of the cartoon. In fact, Vee is everything Shelly SHOULD be. She knows all her dinosaur facts and she makes learning them fun. Her gameshow rewards intelligence with prizes, which encourages kids to listen and learn, similar to how teachers use Kahoot or Blooket.
Simply put, Vee renders Shelly obsolete.
Even the activity in Shelly's room is just a lamer version of Vee's.
Dig for fossils in a sandpit and win prizes... that aren't even guaranteed? What kid would want to do that over participating in the thrilling gameshow they see on TV? Shelly doesn't even dig with you! And even if they weren't interested in Vee, Sprout and Astro also offer kids a lot more than Shelly. Getting a cupcake from Sprout is equivalent to getting a Krabby Patty from SpongeBob himself. Astro, meanwhile, literally has magical abilities. Shelly just cannot compare. Besides, every other main character can break from their gimmick with ease. Astro is more than just "sleepy," he's a magical being who encourages kids to dream big and use their imagination. Sprout is more than just "baker," he's a friend to all who promotes generosity with Cosmo. Vee is more than just "gameshow," she inspires competitiveness and technological advancements toward the future.
Shelly is "dinosaur," but what else is there? She's nice? Fun? Caring? Most toons are. She doesn't offer anything good to children not already deeply invested in dinosaurs.
So, with all this in mind, Shelly's unpopularity with audiences makes sense. But what about her peers? Is the constant ignoring of Shelly by the toons she lives with absurd? Not exactly. Admittedly, some dialogue can be a bit on-the-nose, but that doesn't mean it's nonsensical.
Shelly is not ignored on purpose. This is important to note. Toons are not actively leaving her out, it's always accidental. When they do, they get sheepish about it, but never do anything substantial to rectify their mistake.
And when Shelly is given attention, she has a habit of getting way too excited about it. It comes across as desperate - an undesirable trait.
In this sense, Shelly is stuck in a loop of self-sabotage. But it's not that she's disliked; she's just painfully mediocre.
When she isn't being ignored, she's talking about dinosaurs, something that most toons aren't very interested in. That's all she's known for, to the point where her side hobby of sewing comes as a shock to multiple toons because it's unexpected for Shelly to have other interests.
At the end of the day, most toons just don't have a reason to hang out with her. If they don't care about dinosaurs or have a pre-established bond, then what's the point? Facts can only be entertaining for so long, and when they stop being so, what more can Shelly offer?
Truthfully, a lot, and that's the tragedy of her character. Shelly is so stuck in her own gimmick that she's ignored when it's not relevant, which is practically all the time. But Shelly IS so much more than her dinosaur facts, it's just that few people care to see that.
It is a role in the game that only a character like Shelly can fulfill; it's what makes her so well-written and why many fans love her so much. Her archetype just wouldn't work with any other toon. I hope this post can shed some light on that. Shelly is one of my favorite characters and I swear I could talk endlessly about her. If you got this far, thank you for reading, and stay tuned for more analyses! Have a great day!
Tisha - Gardenview's Underrated Tragedy
If there were ever a Dandy's World character overlooked by the fandom, it would undoubtedly be Tisha. Though not unpopular, she is often disregarded as nothing but the "cleaning-obsessed" toon. But who can blame people for doing that, when her fellow toons do the same thing?
To understand this better, let's group Tisha's conversations into two categories:
Cleaning is brought up/mentioned.
Tisha and the other toon talk about literally anything else.
Of these categories, the first takes up nineteen of her dialogues and the second takes up nine. Compare these stats to toons like Shelly or Goob, who also have a certain gimmick they like to bring up. In categories of:
Dinosaurs/Hugs are brought up/mentioned.
They talk about literally anything else.
Shelly has a ratio of 14:17 and Goob has a ratio of 10:20.
Shelly has struck an almost equal balance and hugs only take up a third of Goob's dialogue. In comparison to Tisha, they don't reference their gimmick nearly as much. The only toons to outshine her are Finn and Shrimpo, whose gimmicks are baked into their everyday speech.
So, how does this help prove Tisha IS more than her cleanliness?
It's important to analyse why exactly Tisha talks about tidying up so much. One could assume it's because she enjoys it, like the other previously mentioned toons, and you wouldn't be completely wrong. Tisha's pleasure in cleaning is crucial to her character. It's her defining feature and is also essential to note. At the end of the day, she DOES like her job as Gardenview's janitor, and having this job is not the problem…
...Tisha's problem is that most toons assume that's all she is: a job.
For every exchange Tisha has where she raves about the benefits of cleanliness, she has one where she's begging toons to pick up after themselves.
This is a regular issue that her friends don't care to solve. It's not a situation of "nagging woman tells people to do chores," it's Tisha repeatedly wasting her breath on people who don't listen.
We see, too, toons ARE aware of how busy Tisha gets. It's something commented on numerous times, yet little is done to lighten her load.
Tisha's interaction with Cocoa is one I want to highlight. Firstly, it's telling that a toon around one month of the year would notice that Tisha is often stuck cleaning by herself, but what's really interesting is that Cocoa is the ONLY toon to ask Tisha if she needs help. Subtly or not, Tisha will ask toons for assistance.
She tries to make a "cleaning club" with Brightney...
...prods Poppy on how good she is at cleaning...
...and begs Looey to assist her with tidying up Yatta's room (to no avail.)
So then, why does she refuse Cocoa's help?
We don't have a concrete answer, but I believe we can infer Tisha's reasoning: Cocoa is just as busy as she is. She's constantly asking how she can aid others in her dialogue, often to the point where her friends will comment on it and tell her to take some time for herself.
It would be a plight Tisha could empathize with, and being as kind as she is, she wouldn't want to add to Cocoa's load.
So, Tisha is stuck cleaning for toons mostly ungrateful and unwilling to aid her, but is that it? Well, there is another point I've been meaning to bring up. If there are any toons unappreciative of Tisha's work, it is undoubtedly the Mains. This is something I don't see talked about at all. Of the toons closest to a specific main (Brightney/Vee, Cosmo/Sprout, Tisha/Shelly, Toodles/Pebble), Tisha is treated objectively the worst.
Brightney is Vee's favorite contestant and close companion. She is also the president of Astro's book club (and another close friend of his)...
...complimented on her intelligence by Shelly...
...and particularly worried about by Sprout.
Cosmo is Sprout's best friend. He is also very close with Astro (enough for him to make cookies of his face, at least)...
...introduced to Sprout by Shelly as seen in their storyboard...
...and friendly enough with Vee for Sprout to specifically ask him to check up on her for him.
And Toodles seems to be universally loved by the cast in general. Her interactions with the Mains specifically are usually positive.
Even Vee, who acts dismissive toward her silly question, doesn't ever put Toodles off.
The exception is Shelly, but her interaction turns sour by complete accident. She did not intend to upset Toodles by any means.
So, what about Tisha? What do her interactions with the Mains look like? In comparison, they are not great.
Astro and Sprout care little about her time, much to her dismay.
The latter of which does not even check up on her like he does with most toons, only concerned about the kitchen he dirtied getting cleaned.
And Tisha's rivalry with Vee is notorious.
(Side note: I don't believe the thing Tisha thinks Vee is "unappreciative" of is her cleaning, but that's another discussion for another post.)
Even Pebble has a negative interaction with her.
Brightney and Cosmo's aren't nearly as bad, especially when looking at Tisha's in comparison.
Though Cosmo gets Pebble angry, it seems his anger is more toward Sprout than him, seeing as how Sprout is the person who told Cosmo to stop supplying Pebble his treats.
The one exception to this is Shelly. Tisha's interactions with her are extremely positive, and in contrast to the other Mains, she seems eager to help her clean her fossils.
But why is this? Is it because Shelly is her friend?
Yes, but also not entirely.
What sets Shelly apart from the other characters is that she is by far the most appreciative of Tisha's work. We see this in their storyboard together. Shelly gets so ecstatic that Tisha went out of her way to polish her fossil, she drops it to pull her into a tight embrace. This level of thankfulness is unheard of for any other character to give to Tisha.
But the worst part? Tisha's twisted only reaffirms the mindset toons fall into. A mindless drone that sweeps away messes when left undisturbed. Her feather duster is coated in ichor. She can't even clean anything without making a mess, dooming her to a loop of tidying up forever.
Overall, Tisha is an overworked character whose efforts often go unrecognized. I hope this post can shed some light on just how sad her situation is. I really wish people would talk about it more. Thank you for reading and stay tuned for the next one!

!! I feel the need to stress that I do NOT support the devs of Dandy's World. They are both horrible people that have done horrible things to others. With that being said, I do still wish to draw stuff for this game !!
How'd you get Vee's face to look like an actual screen, yk with the lines
Actually was done using an image material I got from the Clip Studio assets store. From what I recall it was free to get. But I'm sure there's plenty of good ways to achieve the effect without it, I just opted for that.

Little sneak peak of my main designs so far, currently only have Dandy and Shelly done. The whole thing will be posted whenever I have all of them complete!!
