just saying you respect women and genuinely viewing them as equals isnt enough to make your misogyny go away. its learned behaviors. its things you do without realizing. putting all the emotional and planning labor on your wife, asking the girl child to pick up after the boy without realizing thats what you're doing, gravitating toward certain ways to describe women, not believing women the first time they tell you something because you Must know better, not asking women for help with physical labor when theyre closest to you, claiming that women are always making up drama or infighting when they bring up something harmful someone did (maybe even when it wasnt you and they are just generally ranting about treatment by men), bringing up men when people are specifically talking about women–especially when women (trans and cis.) are talking about their specific experiences and challenges in life.

you cant just opt out of perpetuating misogyny. no experience exonerates you from perpetuating misogyny. you have to consciously look at your actions and internal biases and correct them. if you are a man, cis or trans, you have to be aware of how your societal privledge makes you used to things being a certain way that is misogynistic. its really easy to keep it going without noticing it. other trans men do it all the time to trans women. even when trans women dont specifically mention trans men. and they maintain that they cant perpetuate misogyny. i know many cis men who claim to not be misogynistic, and they arent shitty, but then they continue misogynistic behavior and weaponize incompetence without even realizing.

everyone Can perpetuate misogyny. and Does. you Have to catch yourself. man, woman, adult, child, trans, cis, everyone. its so ingrained in society that it is more akin to moving your arms when you walk than it is picking an object up and holding it. ignoring that you can cause harm makes you the one who will cause some of the worst harm. because youll align yourself as an ally (wonderful!) but then underneath everything, including your own conscious reactions, you will continue it.

think about how you react when women say something, ask yourself if you immediately assume you are being attacked or like theyre bringing up something that is "stupid" when she speaks. if you catch yourself doing this, take a step back before you externalize your reaction and ask yourself if you really listened to what she said and understood it, and if she was even talking about you in the first place. i know you dont want to be the asshole, but you have to put in the work to not be an ass by accident.

I talked with someone who works in book publishing, and they mentioned they get a lot of AI slop these days. I asked how they know what's human-written, and they said that there's one thing that will reveal AI slop without error, and that's the author not knowing their own creation.

A real author can talk about their story for hours. They love to elaborate every character, every twist, every detail. Because those existed in their head long before they ever made it to the paper. They were loved before they were written.

AI slop wasn't. It was just vomited into existence.

Someone who generates their story with AI will never bond with their story the way real writers do. That's why they may not know what to say when they're asked why did the character do this, or even remember the scene in the first place. It's something they read, not something they wrote. And to a writer, those are not the same.

There's a unique bond between the creator and the creation. If your writing doesn't come of you, you'll always lack that.

I keep hearing soon we won't be able to tell. And perhaps, in a superficial sense, that's true. But there is a difference. It's not em dashes or repeated words. It's whether the story was made by someone who loves it and cares about it.

If the writer's eyes light up when asked why did the character do that? and they start their very own Ted Talk about that specific scene...

then it's real.

I know that some British people take umbrage at Americans calling the Great British Bake Off relaxing, but it's just because GBBO is such a different kind of stressful from American baking shows.

American baking shows will be called something like "Cupcake Knife Fight", there's horror movie lighting everywhere and dramatic stings every 5 seconds. All of the contestants are shit talking each other and fist fighting over the one single deep fryer provided by production. It will show the judges all whispering to each other at their super villain table overlooking the whole kitchen, and one will be like, "Oh my god. Everyone look at Brenda right now. She's straight tanking it." And it will cut to Brenda, who is running around covered in flour and crying and also bleeding for some reason. Then you get a clip from an interview with one of the contestants, and they're like, "I really need to win this. Without this award money, I'm gonna need to close my restaurant, sell my dad, and live out of my car. AGAIN." Then the giant digital doomsday clock overhead lets out a horrid klaxon, the judges tell half of them that their cupcakes taste disgusting, and one of them gets eliminated and sent to walk down the dramatically-lit shame hallway never to be seen again.

Meanwhile GBBO is in a lovely, brightly colored tent, there are delightful and friendly hosts/jesters there to keep everyone entertained, and all of the B Roll is of like... a bumblebee going into a flower, or a lamb running in a field. And yes, there will be moments where someone will mess up their timing or something, and they'll be looking at their bake through the oven door like, "oh gosh I don't think this will rise in time!" Then they stand up to find Paul Hollywood directly behind them ominously. His creepy whitewalker eyes will glow white, and he'll say something like "the 12th of June. 2035. Drowning." And his eyes will go back to normal and he'll walk away. Then the baker gives a playful grimace to the camera and says "that didnt sound great, did it?". Cut to a sweet looking older woman sipping tea on a stool and she says "oo I do hope that Prue enjoys the taste of my sugary, sticky baps!". Then, at the end, someone gets a gold star for doing good, and the loser of the episode gets in the middle of a giant group hug. You see all of them at the end of the series at a giant carnival with their families and the post credits informs you that all of the contestants have become a Partridge Family-style traveling band and stayed friends forever.
