Sandra Oh is an executive producer on the show. She has plenty of control over her screentime and storyline. Sometimes things just happen, not everything is malicious.

“sometimes things just happen” lol sure giving secondary characters more screentime and visible development than the lead is something that “just happens” how unfortunate what a little mistake by the poor writers they just didn’t manage their jobs well, oh well better luck next time :( except this does not “just happen” without extreme negligence
even besides all the other kinds of “producers” (associate, development, line, regular producers) in s3 there were 10 “executive producers” / “co-executive producers”: Lee Morris, Sandra Oh, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Sally Woodward Gentle, Gina Mingacci, Damon Thomas, Suzanne Heathcote, Lynn Horsford, Jeff Melvoin, Miranda Bowen
once again ignoring the dozen other people who are also some kind of producer, do you think each of these EPs actually has equal influence? here’s a quote from an interview with sally woodward gentle:
Phoebe is being pulled in a million directions. What does she bring to the show these days? She’s always there. She’s always incredibly supporting to the writers if they need a touchstone. Maybe they’re struggling with a certain relationship or how Villanelle would respond or what Eve might do, and she’s there on the end of the phone if they ever need it.
pwb is not meaningfully contributing to the show now besides certain insights into the characters, and does not have any writing credits after s1. clearly you can be an EP without actually doing much except being associated w the show in some way. sandra doesn’t have a single writing credit. neither of them are controlling the story just because they have an extra title.
here are some quotes from a tv writer and producer abt why actors also become EPs:
These credit bumps usually happen as parts of a star’s contract renegotiations once a series hits a certain level of success (often two or three years… but sometimes more, sometimes less). Although TV actors’ contracts are traditionally for seven years (or occasionally 6½), shows are sometimes so successful earlier in their runs that actors renegotiate, asking for more money and a producer credit.
When an actor receives a producer credit, it usually comes alongside a request for more money. Hopefully, the studio acknowledges that part of the show’s success comes from the actor’s presence and performance, and they’re willing to negotiate a new salary and producer credit. Sometimes, an actor’s producer credit is just “vanity,” a concession to keep them happy. But even when the actor earns the credit, it rarely comes tied to actual producing duties or fees. “producer” is a catch-all term and can refer to someone financing the project, someone with a creative and development role, or a big actor wanting the credit and associated profits without taking on an active creative role. so an actor having “executive producer” status could mean any of the following: absolutely nothing, status symbol, they get more of the profits, they do have a larger role in the show’s direction or writing, and/or they invested their own money in the project. do you know which one of these is true for sandra? definitely the profits, but we don’t know anything else, so stop acting like her having the title of EP means anything about how much pull she gets over her own character’s storyline when she isn’t a writer.
and suzanne heathcote being the showrunner trumps any “executive producer” credit an actor has. when right off the bat, suzanne came into s3 immediately saying she always wanted to do a villanelle solo episode, is the co-lead supposed to say “no i don’t want that” even if she somehow had the power to veto? demanding your own character get more scenes when the all white writers clearly have a white favorite does not seem like a winning scenario for a woc who has been experiencing sidelining that’s rooted in racism for decades. sandra signed on for ke s1 because it was finally a well written lead role specifically for her, idk why someone could think the changes in screen time are chill. can you actually think critically abt this instead of saying “brrrrrrr she’s an EP so she clearly supported everything.” i also could be wrong. but lbr which is more likely based on everything i just said. even if i’m wrong that doesn’t make this fine anyway bc it’s the same kind of racism that’s always been a pattern in tv and film
regardless of sandra’s actual thoughts—which we will never know because she has never badmouthed anyone she’s worked with—eve’s lack of screentime and the fact that all her “development” was off-screen in s3 is indicative of a greater racism problem that ke is perpetuating either consciously or unconsciously because the writers love villanelle, know the casual audience loves villanelle, and care abt giving her interesting writing so much more (for being a young, funny, hot, white female. yes villanelle is groundbreaking and unique in her character and story, but eve is just as interesting in her previous normality and then descent to darkness and would be even more interesting if idk that was actually explored on screen in depth the way villanelle is). hope this helped you stop thinking only at surface level in an effort to act like your favorite show couldnt possibly have a problem, when criticism of the problems of media you love is completely valid. if not dw next time you can just say you stan villanelle without pretending you actually care about seeing eve’s character outside the context of her relationship with villanelle <3
