“My parents insisted I give it a try, sir.”
Check out the contrast between Patty’s and Smithers’ reactions.
While the real world reason Smithers mentions his parents despite his father being dead is that the writers hadn’t yet come up with that backstory, in retrospect it probably means that he grew up with a stepfather from an early age.
I love how he is honest to Mr. Burns. He could’ve pretended he was just being a randy straight guy, as admitting to something socially unacceptable makes a lie more believable and so would provide him a good cover for his sexual orientation. He chooses not to. Instead, he gives the sort of response he would give to someone who knew he was gay.
It sounds like the sort of response he would give to a boyfriend or a husband. This makes sense, given he would love for Mr. Burns to be either. So he is more concerned that Mr. Burns doesn’t perceive him to be “cheating” on him than he is that Mr. Burns might realize he’s gay.
Speaking of which, almost everyone who chastises the person caught on film cries out in indignation, not surprise. Even those who are off-screen, such as Cletus’ and Quimby’s wives, sound more scolding than suprised, and this is not just because they’re the wives - Chalmers is irritated, not surprised, for instance.
The only two who sound genuinely surprised are Selma and Mr. Burns. Selma expresses surprise at Patty because she apparently presumes Patty is straight. It genuinely surprises Mr. Burns that Smithers was there, which hints that he doesn’t presume Smithers to be straight. His tone is earnestly quizzical, not dismayed.

Here is the thing though, despite his low-key nature and proclivity to keep a straight-laced outer image, Smithers is not as dull as his cabinet meeting attire and dull palette would make you think, like Burns there is somewhat a duality there regarding his social life, but it’s not nearly as boisterous as Burns’ duality ( which is everything about the man.)
We see aspects of his earlier social life during the episode I Married Marge ( season 3) when not only do we learn that for the first time ever in the series’ history that his first name is Waylon, but he is a notorious frat boy from the Alpha Tau chapter of whatever college/university/tech happened to house him.

Jump to a few seasons forward to Homer the Smithers ( season 7) and we see the extent to how much of a wild nightlife Smithers tries to have despite being magnetically pulled towards the well being of his boss, mentor and secret lover back in Springfield. Smithers tries to live it up on the private gay resort encompassing rowdy and lively activities to try to dampen his mind from separation anxiety, but it is ineffectual (so much that in one of the deleted scenes, after the meaty man-pyramid of power topples into the speedboat one of the gym bunnies asks him if he is thinking of Mr. Burns again.)
Not only does that happen, but later we find out that Smithers on the sexual side of terms cruises for love mostly with older men (he’s a gerontophile, as proven with his carpooling with Dewey Largo (See Homer Run, season 17) and answering to Abe’s false ad in Gorgeous Grandpa (season 25,) but does enjoy a bit of similarly aged men as seen with John (Homer’s Phobia, season 8,) and the occasional looker here and there in the comics.)
And we come to a conclusion, Smithers tries to play it straight (in more than one sense) to distance his private life from his real life (again I can hear you going well, duh in the background) with varying and usually blatant shades of transparency - it’s like he wants to only appear straight just not to break conservative norms and usually out of fear because of said conservative roles - Smithers is nary a rabblerouser nor a radical, as he tries to keep his head down to prevent issues from stirring up and to appear aloof. This was probably a great source of anxiety for him in the past, and he learned to deal with it just to stay way more in line than what would be considered usually normal for any person ( considering this is why he went to Maison Derriere just to avoid fighting with his parents again, which was probably the root issue with his sexuality identification early in life, along with being bullied at school from the likes of Homer and others*) on the opposite end of the spectrum, playing the consummate apple-polisher and rule follower in school he probably ran into even more issues along that path, making him shockingly aloof, until he just learned to keep his mouth shut completely like a whipped dog ala Pavlovian response to wedgies, beatings, draconian punishment and other forms of torture. Because of this starkness, he tends to polarize himself quite unnaturally, even going as far as marrying someone early on in a lavender marriage ( and I say it is a lavender marriage because Smithers never has been shown to have bisexual tendencies and tends to shrink away from women who bare any sexual or romantic inclination towards him.)
From this episode Bart After Dark, we are given the first glimpse into how much of a personal hell Smithers’ early life was assumed to be and probably is. We aren’t given nary another taste of his tragic leanings until the later episode Bye Bye Nerdy (season 12) when Homer and Barney team up to pummel a much younger Waylon in the hallways of the campus.
But, despite the security that playing it straight provides to Waylon, he knows that it is living a lie, he recognizes that it is a great dishonor not only to himself but to other LGBTQ+ people and throughout the whole ordeal tosses out enough hinting that only the attuned can pick up on it. It’s like he wants to break free from stigmas of the antiquated stereotypical American “expectation,” but has issues with that identification, grappling with that titan, the self-struggle within being tugged at the corners of his judgmental appendages very much like the quartered man being drawn between four horses. Those situational mores of what he was taught, what has kept him alive for the past 20 some years, and what he identifies with, and what he thinks is the moral right of humanity. He doesn’t hate that he is gay - Waylon has long accepted that factor in flying colors ages ago, and we see him boldly becoming more open with each new season - but hates the stigmatization that it piles upon his back akin to the dead weight of a crucifix. This is why he vehemently fights for any form of equal right, but on the other side doesn’t want to bring any direct attention to himself - Tapped Out’s Level 54 Ruth Powers walkthrough proves this when Smithers suggests to Burns that equal rights in the workplace for women is a step forward, including equality for people with varying sexual orientations, piggybacking that notion on top a personal issue, a place of understanding and internal endeavors.
This is why we see him so upset with Moe in the episode Flaming Moe (season 22) because Mr. Szyslak not only actually tramples on Waylon’s personal struggles and makes a mockery of it, but Smithers himself is reminded of the issues he had to deal with (and to some little affair, still does) opening his psychological scar into a wound again, misleading others who still struggle and believed in his direction. Smithers is very much like a mother hen looking out for the well being of the flock, whom turns into a shrewd rooster when said fox raids the henhouse.
The glut of self-indulgence within sex ( again, we don’t know how much he has on a basis, but the interview mentions that he cruises, so I can surmise it’s quite a bit) is to distract and numb those feelings outside his being, the external forces creating and nailing down that toxic barrier of self-loathing, and inadequacy. Going to clubs and partying is like his own personal protest, and one that is self-destructive in some cases. He’s not a party monster, but does enjoy nights of excess on occasion, usually seen when he is depressed (again, Homer the Smithers and Flaming Moe.)
* On the flipside of this, we will forego the theory right now (to save space) that Mr. Burns is perhaps the major safe haven in his life, from past and present and thus one of the pillars believed to be holding up the building of his adoration for him. Burns may have been one of the few people in Waylon’s life to provide security and stability in his routine and social outlook - not a father figure per se, far from it, but more of a mentor and dare I say, perhaps an early ‘gay icon’ - who helped him accept and identify with the things considered ‘unusual’ and ‘effeminate’ as “normal,” and as we also can point out a bigger bully who bullies the bullies - being that powerful force to reckon with to make up of his own personal shortcomings.
“He’s not a party monster, but does enjoy nights of excess on occasion”
This is what I meant. I didn’t mean to imply that I thought he was a dull as dishwater wet blanket who never parties or does anything wild. But that’s how he usually comes across to others, so it stands out when Burns assumes he is going to live it up despite earlier thinking the life he leads is dull.
Also, I don’t think having a lot of sex (and while we don’t know how much, we do know he is getting laid pretty regularly between his relationships and casual encounters) is the same as having a wild nightlife. (And college doesn’t count; everyone lets loose and breaks away from parental restrictions then.)
He enjoys a night of drinking and dancing, but he’s not going out every weekend. I was universally considered to be the most boring, strait-laced person in high school and college, but even I would go out drinking and to parties. There was a marked difference in the frequency or intensity between me and the other students, though.
I agree the reason he is so buttoned-down is primarily due to his reluctance to make waves and offend the sensibilities of those with authority over him. That’s the main reason I’m that way, anyway, especially after years of the school officials blaming me for the vicious homophobic bullying I underwent growing up in the most conservative part of California, saying it was my fault for standing out even though I wasn’t even out but everyone could tell anyway. At least I had my parents on my side who told us kids from an early age that they had no problem if any of us turned out to be gay; poor Waylon didn’t even have that.
I think you’ve hit the nail on the head when it comes to him striving to be so over-the-top competent at following the rules and blending in, which also is probably a source of his obsessive-compulsive tendencies. That’s probably the same reason for me, too - as a kid, I knew I was different from a very early age in some way I knew I couldn’t control, and so I decided to control that which I could - I almost never broke the rules, and whenever I broke even a minor one, I would burst into tears because I felt I’d failed my parents even if they weren’t upset and weren’t going to punish me, and I basically strove to be perfect and conform in any way I could in order to deflect from my obvious and immutable differences.
For instance, I always wanted a short haircut like the boys, as socially I had been just “one of the boys” since kindergarten, but when I was ten and finally got the courage to ask for a short haircut (thinking buzz cut short, but I just said I wanted it short), then all it took was for my dad to say, “Not too short, I hope,” and I said I wanted it shoulder-length. I never got the courage to get a “men’s” haircut until I was 25. And that was with my parents being proactively gay-accepting in the 90s! Because fearing the consequences of being different made me an approval-junkie. For Smithers, he’s growing up in the 60s with homophobic parents, so there’s a lot more pressure on him to conform.

Why do you love Nymphomanic? I’ve tried to get into it but it’s so damn boring
i just think its a very interesting character study and i love all the little comparisons and parallels stellan skarsgårds character makes (like the fishing stuff during the train story) and i rly enjoy the conversations between him and joe in general. the movie is also visually stunning with lots of amazing shots paired with amazing classical music that rly sets the mood and atmosphere. but most of all its just exactly my taste like its almost like the movie was made for me in a way like it just rly speaks to me on every level
im also a big fan of lars von triers work in general and ive seen all of his movies and consider him one of the best film makers of all time so im pretty much the target audience for nymphomaniac so that probably helps lol but if ur not very familiar with von triers work and overall style i think its gonna be hard to appreciate it/fully enjoy it and it IS a slow movie (i mean its like 4-5 hours long ffs thats why its cut into two parts/volumes) but i like slow movies lol and von triers movies are all slow burners and if thats not ur thing then ofc its gonna bore u to death but thats fine its definitely not for everyone so dont sweat it
Watched Nymphomaniac & it's an annoying movie I'll review it. It's like this experience of talking with a guy that has extremely low self steem but at the same time thinks he's the smartest guy in the universe & also he wants to fuck you so he's trying to impress you with his cringe-inducing speeches about how you really should feel bad about pedophiles bc if you think about it most of them never abuse children even though they really want to & I'm not saying I agree with pedophiles or that they should be allowed to abuse I just want you to understand that I'm a very open minded man & an empath so like I can understand even the worst type of people & feel bad for their struggles but also like I said he's insecure so even though he's telling you all that about pedophiles to impress & show you how unique he is (as good as jesus) due to his insecurity he has prey animal instincts so thru all of this talk his eyes are moving about nervously & he's stuttering like the human version of a hamster mid-panic attack in short he's realizing you're not gonna be sucking his dick at the end of this conversation & he's already a little angry at you for it but also there's the self-loathing so he remembers he's an empath & thinks I can't blame her for not sucking my dick even though I'm sure she's a slut who sucks dick all the time I understand her I'm a terrible human being no one would ever want me & then you get out of his presence & he goes home & cries. So Nymphomaniac is like if that experience was a movie. That's my review of it
It is so strange how, when it comes to French movies, Snow-White was adapted/re-adapted four different times... and each time it is about sex. No matter if they are live-action or animated, a retelling of the proper tale or its "sequel", serious or parodic, its always about sex.
"Blanche comme neige": Snow-White's story becomes a girl's sexual awakening into a femme fatale woman.
"Miroir mon amour": Snow-White brings her prince and his parents to her own parents to settle the wedding, and we get into some sort of perverse, psychanalytic, Freudian/Jungian/Bettelheim reading of the various relationships of the characters of the fairytale as a sexual tragedy.
"Elle voit des nains partout": A "fractured fairytale" comedy with Snow-White's tale as the loose plot connecting the various Monty Python-like gags... And quite a handful of sex jokes since in this version Snow-White is a lovable pansexual nymphomaniac.
"Blance-Neige la suite": An animated parody of Disney-like fairytales posing itself as a sequel to the story of Snow-White... and a sex comedy meant for a mature and warned audience.
That's... that's like some sort of thing with the French cinema. It is impossible to get a Snow-White adaptation, and not have it sexual in some way apparently.
Heck, our adaptation of DONKEY SKIN is less sexual than the Snow-White adaptations... IT IS BASICALLY VIRGINAL COMPARED TO THEM!
[Though funnily enough, out of all those movies, it is the most sexual one that has Snow-White being sexless. "Blanche-Neige la suite", which is the most openly sexual of all the four pieces, the most NSFW of the four movies... is also the only one where Snow-White is actually basically her Disney self through and through and not depicted as a sexual character in any way. In fact, while all the other movies go from the irreverent to the perverse reimagining of the character, "Blanche-Neige la suite", THE big sex fairytale comedy of screen in France, has the most... "decent", I will dare say, depiction of Snow-White, to the point she is the ONLY character in the movie that does not have sex or any sexual activity from the beginning to the end. Like... yeah, the most pleasant and pure and respectful depiction of Snow-White - well, Disney's Snow-White to be precise - in French cinema is... her appearance within a movie that is "Shrek, but what if it was an orgy?"]

Nymphomaniac Vol. 1 - Dir. Lars von Trier (2013)
Lars von Trier’s Nymphomaniac Vol. 1 is a film so rich and layered that it defies simple categorization. As part of his Depression Trilogy, it delves deep into themes of desire, trauma, and self-destruction, chronicling the life of Joe, a woman consumed by her addiction to sex. Raised in an emotionally barren household with an absent mother, Joe discovers sexuality early, only to become entirely enveloped by it.
What makes Nymphomaniac extraordinary is von Trier’s ability to merge seemingly disparate disciplines—mathematics, music theory, hunting techniques—into a singular, multi-dimensional narrative. Each element is meticulously woven into the fabric of the film, revealing an astonishing level of intellectual depth and artistic ambition.
Emotionally raw and visually striking, the film oscillates between sorrow, madness, eroticism, and high art. It is provocative, unflinching, and deeply philosophical. Nymphomaniac Vol. 1 is an experience, a fearless exploration of human desire and existential despair. A bold, controversial, and undeniably brilliant work that cements von Trier as one of the most daring auteurs of modern cinema. According to our cinema interpretation, this is one of the highest and most accurate representations of art.
