Lexie watches The Lizzie Bennet Diaries and has too many thoughts about it. Be sure to follow the other Lady of Quality, Emily, over at senseandeducation.tumblr.com
OK, fine. I give up. I’m going to believe that the “eerily Domino like software” automatically adds in the bloody ding noises when anyone winks and also edits the videos into the segments we see.
I also finally watched the Q&A all the way through. :/ <—that is my entire reaction. (Except when...
So re: Martin's video on Emma's channel. I don't think that means that she posted it where everyone can see. I think that means that it exists, in viewable form, in the Emma Approved Universe.
The mechanics of EA made a lot more sense when I stopped thinking about it in terms of what Emma is doing behind the scenes (with the notable exception of Knightley's expressions being meant for Emma in post when she edits them), and more about the videos being a sort of mockumentary if they are posted on PD and in universe and visible if they are posted on Emma's channel.
DUDE, if we are in universe Emma left a message, on the phone of someone in a time zone with 10 hours of difference (CA-Athens, Greece), who is on her honeymoon. 9am in CA is 7pm in Athens. Ryan and Annie were out to dinner or smooching up a storm, not livetweeting whatever Emma told them to do.
I understand that there are deeper criticisms available for the transmedia team (wedding photos!), but I don't think an hour's delay on a tweet is one of them.
So those wink sounds that end up in the the show? Emma has to edit those in. They aren’t magically generated when Emma winks. And thinking about her obsessively reviewing her own footage and adding in sound effects makes me kind of sad in a way that I think is effective from a story telling POV.
I quite like this discussion of Emma's relationship to the audience and in-verse vs. out-of-verse.
I think the ultimately Emma doesn't yet realize that she is making these videos for herself-- to give herself perspective on her life and to eventually use them to build her brand even further when they are released to the in-verse public.
And Knightley's looks at the camera being for future!Emma just make a lot of sense to me. "Can you even hear yourself?" he appears to be saying.
Emma Approved AU: Emma is Domino
[[inspired by senseandeducation’s post]]
After the success in Sanditon, the town of Highbury partners with Pemberley Digital for a full-scale use of the Domino technology. However, Highbury hasn’t been told about the new and improved Editing Match-Maker Algorithm With Over-Optimized Dominoing Heuristics Of Underdeveloped Social Etiquette or E.M.M.A.W.O.O.D.H.O.U.S.E for short. When the citizens of Highbury use their new app to communicate with one another, E.M.M.A. is listening in. It isn’t long before she begins to interfere in their daily life, re-routing calls and sending pre-edited clips between pairs that E.M.M.A. has calculated as “optimal for mating”. IT wiz Alex Knightley eventually steps in and corrects E.M.M.A.’s mistakes and teaches her how humans really fall in love — unexpectedly.
While watching today’s Emma Approved, I felt like Emma was being very Glinda/Galinda-esque, but then I remembered that Glinda’s makeover of Elphaba was inspired by Clueless, which is an adaptation of Emma, of which Emma Approved is also an adaptation.
SenseAndEducation: Did you know? A hippogriff is a real thing. I mean it's not just something J.K. Rowling made up.
LBDeffteedubs: I have decided that "legit" shall be the new term for that. Because there's "fantastical beast supported by centuries of oral and written tradition" and then there's "fantastical beast made up by a British woman in the mid-90s." They're the same amount of real, but different amounts of legit.
SenseAndEducation: I like it. But it doesn't help figure out how the heck we talk about Pemberley Digital?
Emma Is Domino was a theory lbdeffteedubs and I spun out of this episode of WTS when Gigi starts noticing the “glitch” in Domino that hones in on romantic tension. I really wanted them to just run with the meta in-joke that this completely improbable “self-editing video call app” was becoming...
There is no reason that this can't still be an AU somehow. Or that Emma Approved could partner with Pemberley Digital to make the Domino Experience that much more Emma Approved.
Basically, my favorite SuAusten character (I just made that up that's what I'm calling this universe I don't care if it already has a name) is still Domino.
Okay, so the workday is over and it’s not time for dancing yet, and I really don’t feel like scheduling more tweets, so here’s what I’m going to do. I’m going to write my piece about how this makes sense with a pinch of willing suspension of disbelief and a soupçon of social media knowledge and experience. Caution: LONG.
First, a memo about Domino (that I just made up):
What is Domino?
Domino is a video shooting and editing platform that seeks to make telling your story as easy as possible. Pemberley Digital is in the alpha testing stages at the moment, and we will soon move to the beta product, which will allow early adopters to join in the fun.
Simply put, Domino helps you tell your story. It’s a platform focused on first-person narrative. We have developed an algorithm using a proprietary blend of facial recognition software, voice modulation analysis, and production value charting to help you make videos that are professional-quality, every time.
E: Awwwww. I was expecting more straight-up keysmashing, but I guess she's a Darcy, she has to be articulate about the feelings.
L: Haha, yEP
E: hahahaha Fitz
L: I really want to see the first Fitz/Brandon/Lizzie/Darcy double date. Where Fitz gives them a ridiculously hard time and Brandon tries to make Darcy more comfortable but it just isn't working at all.
E: omg. OMG. And Gigi is trying to text-stalk everyone all evening and making it more and more awkward
E: eventually Fitz and Lizzie insist that they go out for karaoke and they try to get Darcy to sing Don't Stop Believing but he literally doesn't know the words and Brandon is claiming neutrality but videotaping the whole thing on his phone
L: ahahahahahahahaa GIGI: WHAT IS GOING ON SERIOUSLY FITZ TELL ME
L: GIGI: NO SERIOUSLY LIZZIE PLEASE ANSWER
L: AND THEN I WANT TO SEE, like, the tenth double date where Darcy and Brandon are making some sort of gourmet French food in the kitchen and Lizzie and Fitz are drinking wine and talking about how good they look in aprons. And Darcy is comfortable enough to laugh it off and give her a kiss on the cheek when he brings out the appetizers and
I just got online and saw that Domino episode 3 is accidentally out in the world early. This was not on purpose! Please wait and watch it on the Pemberley Digital account—the number of views it gets on that account is important for us to track.
OK, you’ve figured us out. At the end of LBD, Domino becomes self-aware at turns into Skynet. Pemberley Digital is actually a front company for Cyberdyne Systems.
Okay, so the workday is over and it's not time for dancing yet, and I really don't feel like scheduling more tweets, so here's what I'm going to do. I'm going to write my piece about how this makes sense with a pinch of willing suspension of disbelief and a soupçon of social media knowledge and experience.
It's a platform focused on first-person narrative. We have developed an algorithm using a proprietary blend of facial recognition software, voice modulation analysis, and production value charting to help you make videos that are professional-quality, every time.
Our team has analyzed literally hundreds of hours of footage from the best storytellers out there-- everyone from slam poets to actors spouting Shakespearian soliloquies to YouTube's most popular vloggers-- to create an automated process that takes your voice and showcases it in the best light. When you hit a high note, Domino will help you highlight it.
We understand Domino won't always be right. In its alpha iteration, Domino automates the entire process, from shooting to uploading. In its beta iteration, Domino will allow you to choose whether you want to upload your Domino video as-is or fine-tune it with our easy-to-use video editing software.*
What makes Domino special?
Beyond its ease-of-use and automatic features, Domino's uniqueness lies in its understanding of our modern networked lives. We want to help you tell your story, but we understand that you aren't the only character. That's why we included collaborative tools, like in-video messaging and video chatting.
All you need to do is have the other party download the Domino App from Pemberley Digital on her smartphone, tablet, or computer. Domino can then connect with them through the app on any networked device.
Think of it as a combination of Google Hangouts, Apple's FaceTime technology, and vlogging. This combination allows you to create something unique not offered by any other platform. Once again, Domino's unique algorithm deletes random pauses in your conversation, and makes sure your conversation is represented in the most engaging way possible.
*Note to our alpha testers: The part of the product we are most concerned with testing is the auto-upload feature, which is why we've disabled the editing option for now. Please be aware while you're shooting that your video will be posted online and represent Pemberley Digital accordingly.
Second: thoughts on why this is both a TERRIBLE IDEA and TOTALLY BELIEVABLE.
Okay, so here's the thing. Mistakes happen, and they happen a lot in social media. One of the things you want to be very wary of is your brand reputation and how you are presented to the outside world. And I think Gigi's videos are a mistake, but a totally believable mistake.
Darcy's busy. Gigi's distracted. Everyone in the LBD universe is focused on one thing: figuring out the Lydia situation. Except, someone, somewhere, in middle management at PD is looking at their Domino launch schedule and figuring out that if they want to be out of alpha testing any time within the next month, they should push forward.
The way Gigi has described Domino is a little bit unbelievable, but that could be because she doesn't understand it entirely. If you look at my product description, I'm saying basically the same thing. But I don't use the word "drama" and instead used a bunch of marketing babble to make you believe that this product is telling your story the way you want it to be told. Which is not true.
Where's the kill switch? Where's the auto-private function? Where's the brand management? Probably on Darcy's plate and Darcy is a little preoccupied right now. Basically, PD has violated rule one of social media, which is DON'T GIVE INTERNS CONTROL OF THE BRAND.
Not that Gigi is an intern, but I don't think she actually works for the company in an official capacity beyond contracted graphic design, and this is something you want someone with a little bit more experience with the brand to be doing. But, again, something went wrong somewhere.
It happens. And hopefully PD won't suffer long-term effects from it, and it's something maybe Lizzie can help fix if she ever comes on board full-time.
There's another option, too: this is some devious social media person's plan to buzz market. There's obviously interest in the Lizzie Bennet brand (again, taking Lizzie as a real person, and not a character, and then, through branding turning her back into a character blows my freaking mind) and giving a waiting market interested in vlogging what basically amounts to a subliminal advertisement the entire time they're watching what they think is just "drama." Yeah, it could happen.
One time this ad came on right before LBD and I had tabbed away to let it run. I zoned back in and had this weird thought that maybe Kiera Knightly was schilling for LBD as the next generation of story telling. It was super weird.
It is a truth universally classified that an ex-agent in possession of an undercover organization must eventually save a life.
Years ago, Will Darcy left the intelligence when he thought he had seen the last of notorious pimp, Mr Wickham. But what happens when a mysterious woman enters his life and they discover his best friend had never really been a med student at all?
With his past and her present colliding, the stakes are higher than ever as they find themselves racing between the unforgiving hills of San Francisco and the slums of Serbian slavery.
[Pride and Espionage ideas had been a joint LBD Seahorses and genderific effort. Credits go to everyone!]
