Sleepy Hollow goes Gilmore Girls
We keep saying SLEEPY HOLLOW, 1998 takes inspiration from Gilmore Girls, so it was INCREDIBLY exciting to have John Cabrera, aka an actual RESIDENT of Stars Hollow (Brian Fuller), aka the BEST Hep Alien band member back our Kickstarter. And when he heard how much his show inspired us, he reached out to offer his help! Like, I'm still boggling at this level of NICENESS.
There's a band in Sleepy Hollow, 1998 called THEM BONES. The frontman is the ex-boyfriend of our protagonist's crush and I imbued him with as many Jordan Catalano vibes as reasonable. I don't want to spoil the story, but Them Bones was critical enough to the story that we designed them a whole series of band posters. Here's a piece of one.

And here's the fun part -- John Cabrera has continued to play music with Todd Lowe, who played Zach on Gilmore Girls. In addition to periodic Hep Alien reunion shows, they're working on a new, secret side project. So we asked if we could make their new project a little less secret by adding it to the Sleepy Hollow universe. AND THEY SAID YES.

I am particularly excited by being able to offer a SIGNED BAND POSTER as part of our campaign, since I have a collection of band posters torn off the walls of dingy venues from like 1998-2011 that all mean a stupid amount to me. This is a mockup but we WILL take inspiration from my collection before we finalize the art.
Running a Kickstarter is kind of grueling, in that I hate self-promotion, but this is one of those moments where the sun comes out and the planets align and I'm reminded that creating stuff is really fun.

Madelines and Metadata
Sleepy Hollow, 1998 is a story via letters in the mail, which requires two things: @jaybushman's love of adapting stories from one medium to another and my love of metadata and ephemera.
I’ve always believed that we can find critical pieces of a story inside metadata. Our brains love making connections; in a narrative, we can’t help but turn the who, why, when, where, what, and how into purposefully structured data points. That structure gives us essential context. Here’s another way of phrasing it: ephemera and marginalia allow us to see how someone tries to give the chaotic world around them some semblance of order. There’s so much story hiding in…stuff.
This 2002 burned CD with attached post-it note from my brother hits me in the feels far more than any journal entry or photograph of that trip ever could:
I never met my great-grandfather, but through the journal he kept during his work travels in 1924, I can know him.
Perhaps most importantly, I did meet the great-grandmother whose famous “Chocolate Dream Drops” recipe achieved legendary status in my family. But I could never have appreciated her as a person when I was 5 and she was in her 80s. What I have from her is a lifetime of ephemera, in the form of recipes changed over time, and a closer relationship to my mother and grandmother from connecting through those recipes.
Look around you right now. I’m willing to guess there is an object in your field of vision right now that carries history, weight, connection, a memory. That’s what we mean when we say that the story pieces in Sleepy Hollow, 1998 will “pull you into a different world.”

If you’re anything like me, the only things you find in your mailbox now is bills and junk mail. But back in the day I used to write postcards letters, and then sometimes receive the same in return, and those pieces of paper would bring me joy and something to put on the fridge. I want to feel like that again, and I want other people to get to experience that feeling, too, so when @jaybushman mentioned a story adaptation idea he had I jumped at the chance to help make it happen. "Sleepy Hollow, 1998" comes to you, right to your mailbox, over the course of six weeks. Each envelope includes a letter from Ichabod Crane, describing his exploits in Sleepy Hollow. Each envelope also includes an artifact from the storyworld – think sketches, postcards, zines, and placemats. Things that fold up flat into an envelope. Right now we're almost funded on Kickstarter, but I know we're going to keep telling stories by mail because we really want to and we believe there are people out there who want to enjoy receiving mail. This doesn't fall into an easily understandable project category so if this interests you at all I am begging for reblogs, because I'm pretty sure that's how we'll find people who understand what we're trying to do.

We're live on Kickstarter! For anyone who loves classic literature, the 90s, or pie (pie plays a big role in the story)
Psyched to share that the Kickstarter campaign for “SLEEPY HOLLOW, 1998” goes live tomorrow morning! Here’s a sneak peek into what we’ve been cooking up.
Back in the early days of Twitter, I met a few other folks experimenting with the platform for telling stories, and we traded notes. Over the next few years, once a year like clockwork, someone would come onto the platform to announce. “The First Twitter Novel.” We’d have a laugh and send a welcome message. "Come on in, the water’s fine!"
Nobody achieves anything alone. Even a Garage Kubrick is working with forms and formats other people pioneered, treading territory others walked before, even if they didn’t know it.
Sometimes, erasing who came before is intentional, cynical. But more often than not, it’s just not knowing: because interactive storytelling and storytellers do a terrible job of archiving their work.
Because the people tasked with creating material to explain and contextualize a work -- the marketing department -- are of necessity focused on the next thing, not the last thing.
Because interactive has no agreed upon canon, we often end up making the same mistakes, have to learn the same lessons, over and over again.
Most of the time, when we talk about a "canon" of work in a particular medium, it's an argument about what belongs in and what belongs out, of how such canon needs to be subverted or disrupted.
But when there's no canon at all? That's much worse.

Look, do you know how much I wish I could just send you a copy of this story and these letters RIGHT NOW? Do you know how terrible it is to have to explain something as if it's experimental art when it is just LETTERS. IN THE MAIL. THAT TELL A STORY, aka something humans have been doing for hundreds of years?
It kills me that modern digital marketing requires a whole build-up to this story being released. It's not enough to HAVE an amazing story told in an analog way, you have to document it and defend it and explain it to digital platforms that do not understand the desire for a physical artifact of a story that isn't merch.
But we're adults, so we're playing the game. We have a website where we ask for your email address, and then our email asks you to go to Kickstarter and ask to be notified on launch because somehow we have to prove people want stories in the mail BEFORE WE EVEN DETAIL FOR YOU WHAT THE STORIES IN THE MAIL EVEN ARE and the neurodivergent in me is gnashing its teeth wanting to show you the ART and the REWARDS and the ZINESssssssssss.
But we can't afford to just print five hundred copies of these letters and sell them until they run out because beautiful artifacts printed by good people costs money, and we spent all the money we do have on art because PAYING PEOPLE FOR ART IS IMPORTANT.
So, y'know. If you could help us play the game by giving us your email address and then following us on Kickstarter that would be awesome, because I JUST WANT TO SEND YOU BEAUTIFUL STORIES IN THE MAIL.
(also i really want to talk about what/how we remember the late 90s with people, so I really need this story to be out there in the world)
