currently reading the tenant of wildfell hall by anne bronte and its making me realise, once again, that men are awful
how can people read "i hope she'll be a beautiful fool" and still think that the great gatsby was written by a man? men don't have the emotional depth to understand the pain and despair behind that one wish daisy had for her daughter
imagine if mskingbean89 just showed up on some form of social media and was like "hey. yes, it's me." and we all pronounce them the messiah because it's about time for that to happen
“i could fix him” “i could make him worse” well DONT im trying to study him and your tampering would completely throw off my results
Me reading a really good book: god this makes me wanna write
Me reading a really bad book: ugh this makes me wanna write
Me having coffee: i wanna write
Me going on a drive: i wanna write
Me doing the dishes: i wanna write
Me waking up: i wanna write
Me writing:
i always feel a little twist in my stomach and hear a little voice in my head that tells me to scream "please love them even more! don't miss your chance like i missed mine!!" to kids when i see them with their grandfathers.
The Problem With Modern Literature
Obviously this shit is all just my opinion if you think otherwise that’s cool idc.
Literature in the last 30 years has become absolute shit. It’s been plagued by what i call “fast fiction”. It has led to people writing just for the sake of writing and making money. There’s also the issue of critics and the reading community calling every other book that comes out a “modern classic” and they end up being the worst shit you’ve ever fucking read. Bland characters, bland story, and the writing is like that of a teenage girl writing fan fiction on wattpad. There are very few “good” authors out there still writing. I hate labeling things as good and bad but i just can’t help myself here yk. A good author will write in a way that challenges the writing of that time and doesn’t write like anyone else. You can compare the writing between good authors and you can instantly tell the difference between them. Bad authors on the other hand write exactly the same way as authors in their own class do. They write like robots and are indistinguishable from one another. Anyone reading this might wonder, who do i consider to be good authors? Well if anyone cares some of them (in my opinion) are Murakami, Wallace, Didion, Yanagihara, Garcia Marquez, and Allende are the ones i can name off the top of my head rn. These writers are writers that will be read decades and centuries from now the same way we read Austen and Dostoevsky. Those trendy books posted on social media are not future classics nor modern classics. They are just period pieces. Pieces of literature that will only be read and remembered for so little time. However this doesn’t mean they are bad. It might seem like i’m being stupid rn but there have been authors throughout history that didn’t receive praise for their work during their time and today we consider great. Kafka for instance was not appreciated until a bit after the second world war nearly 20 years after his death. Same could be said for Austen who found little fame during her life. The point is some of the shit we don’t appreciate or recognize now will probably be recognized in the future as a masterpiece. But this doesn’t mean everything is a masterpiece or that everything has the potential to be one. Fast Fiction and the consumerist culture has led to the over saturation of the world of literature and has led to the decline of good work. idk how many people actually went through and read this but if you made it to the end thanks for reading my stupid thoughts and let me know what you think. I know my writing is shit but mind you this is just another shitpost.
do you use lipgloss often because i have so many dreams but i don't think i am capable of achieving any of them even though they aren't that big. like one of them is to have a nice little apartment where i can make dinner parties but i'm scared that even if i get the apartment i won't have anyone to invite to my dinner parties and what is the point of achieving your dreams if you have no one to share them with? i think that i am unloveable and that i have a few friends just on pure luck, which is also responsible for all my achievements so far. i don't think i deserve any of the things i have, rather that i just got them because i was lucky, but they will all become unimportant and they will all fade away once i am thrown into the real world and have to fight for myself. i'm scared that the people around me will finally see me the way i see myself and hate me as much as i hate myself. i want to think that i hate myself just because i'm too judgemental but don't they all say that we know ourselves the best? than wouldn't i be the one who knows the real me? isn't that argument enough to prove to everyone that i am a horrible person and don't deserve love or success or happiness? i really wish i could love, or even like myself at least a little bit but i don't think i ever will. anyway, i don't like lipgloss because i think matte lips look better when i overshare on the internet.

Kafka on the Shore - A Brutally Honest Review
To be completely honest, I really, really want to like this book. This was my first experience with one of Murakami's works, and I have to say, I'm disappointed. Murakami was this hyped-up magical realism author that everyone around me had read and recommended, and maybe I came into this book with high expectations, but that all came crashing down about 30 pages in, when Kafka, the main character, began describing a girl's boobs. And yes, I'd heard all the complaints of Murakami's "problematic" writing of female characters, but this was... so much worse than I thought it would be, and this was just the tip of the iceberg.
But first, some of the things I liked about it. One aspect I adored was the magical realism in this book. I don't think I've seen magic as grounded in reality as this book, the way magical occurrences are written into the book so casually as if this were your typical novel is really well done. I also loved the character of Nakata, he really endears himself onto the reader by the time you finish reading the first chapter from his perspective. And, that's kind of it.
Now, let's move on to the bad parts, and oh boy, there are a lot. Let's start with the bit that made me want to put this book down several times and never come back to it, the prophecy. Oh, by the way, this is your warning for spoilers. The entire prophecy is an oedipal complex which basically says Kafka will kill his father and fuck his mother and sister. Yeah. This was the first warning sign that I should've stopped reading long ago, but I pressed on, and yes, the prophecy comes true. It is revealed that Miss Saeki is his mother, and Sakura, the girl he meets on the bus is his sister. Well, not really. It is made pretty clear that these 2 are not his biological mother and sister, but his spiritual ones. Kafka, the protagonist he is, tries at all costs to avoid this prophecy coming true, like any reasonable person. Yet, he rapes Sakura in a dream where she is also aware of him, which is just fucked up on so many levels, and he has sex with Miss Saeki's 15 year old alternate reality self. My problem with this, ignoring the incest, is how self-indulgent this story is with its treatment of female characters and how they are used as nothing but props and given flimsy arcs.
To conclude, I really didn't like this book, no matter how much I tried. If I had to give it a score, I would say 4/10, maybe a 4.5.
completely agree. so many people praised murakami and made me really want to read his works but kafka on the shore was a huge disappointment. i tried to like the book and i tried to be optimistic and find some parts of it that i enjoyed (of course there were some, like the character of nakata, as mentioned above) but the bad parts just ruled them out. the age difference between kafka who is fifteen and miss saeki who is fifty was very disturbing, as well as the incest. the fact that kafka raped his sister was horrible to read, but it was even worse how he felt no or very little remorse after it, claiming that it was something he "had to do". there were so many disturbing parts and so many parts i absolutely hated, that they made me hate the entire book. the portrayal of women is very one-dimentional, i often felt like murakami thinks what makes a woman a woman is menstruation (which is not true, not all women menstruate, and not all who menstruate are women) so he made i'm pretty sure every woman in that book mention it at least once. the part where kafka's father is killing cats was awful to read and i hated every moment of it. many times i wanted to leave the book but i hoped it would take a turn for the better and all the praise i have heard would come true, but unfortunately that did not happen, rather the book kept getting worse. honestly, i would not recommend this book to anyone.
