“He left this morning! How many times do I have to tell you! He’s not here, Steven! He hasn’t been since seven this morning. He told me he would call me when he landed but didn’t…” Liam frowned the gears turning. “He didn’t show up to the meeting… but he left here. Steven,  we might have a problem.”

They definitely had a problem. If Lam was telling the truth, which he definitely believed now, then Kaidan was MIA. The list of people who could use Kaidan to their advantage was long, but those who could have taken the admiral in training was shorter. Thankfully much shorter. “Liam. I’ll call you back.”

“Steven, what are you talking about? I dropped him off myself. This morning. The kids were in the car they said goodbye to him.” He huffed at the older man. “I even took a photo of the kids with him before he left.”

“I’m talking about how Kaidan wasn’t at the damn meeting!” Steven snapped, finally losing what little patience he had left. Slamming his hand down on his desk, he pushed himself to his feet and started pacing. “For God’s sake, Liam. I’m not playing this game anymore.”

Liam frowned. “Missed the meeting? Steve, he was messaging me in the meeting. Told me to leave him alone.” Liam rubbed the back of his head. “You… uhh…” His heart pounded in his chest at the very thought. “Don’t think he’s lying to me… do you?”

Sighing, the admiral rubbed the bridge of his nose in exasperation. Why the man was continuing to deny that his husband was still home with him, he had no idea. But it was getting dull. And it was getting dull fast. “Look, Liam. I don’t care why he decided to miss the meeting. I’ve done it enough times in my life. But I need a damn answer. Just give me something so I don’t have to tell them my own lie. They’ll see right through it if it’s mine.”

“Yeah? Hey, Steve.” Liam looked at his watch shaking his head. Kaidan forgot to call him back again. “Teagan! Don’t hit your brother,” the retired commander sighed. “Sorry. What’s up?” He stepped out onto the back porch away from the noise. 

“Excuse for what?” He listened frowning his uncle’s questions. “What are you talking about?”

Rolling his eyes, he leaned back in his chair and stretched his feet out in front of him. Of course Liam was playing the dumb card, his husband had just missed an important meeting with some of the galaxy’s most important figures. “Kaidan missing the meeting. I need at least some sort of excuse Liam. Anything to appease the delegates.”

Rolling his eyes Liam went about his day chasing after their children, making lunches for the kids, and feeding the animals. He wondered what was wrong with his husband for a moment before it slipped his mind hearing a crash from the living room. “Teagan!”

He didn’t want to make this call. Now when he was sure there was a reasonable excuse for Kaidan not showing up. After all, the man had a family, and it wasn’t like he had ever wanted to the position Hackett and Anderson had shoved onto him. Still, he had to know why Kaidan hadn’t shown for the meeting, if only for the paperwork and visiting delegates.

Pulling Liam’s contact information up, he let the line ring with a patience he didn’t realize he still possessed. When the ex-commander finally answered the line, he grunted a greeting. “So what’s the excuse? He oversleep because the kids kept him up last night? Or did he fall down the stairs while getting ready to leave?”

Repetition. He loathes it. And yet here he is forced to repeat the same conversation over and over again. Why couldn’t she get it through her damn head that this was the way things were going to be? There was no way around it. And there was definitely no way to change it. Not with all the manpower and time that had gone into the whole thing.

“Hannah.” He gives her a look that would kill an unblooded private. “Shut up.”
