Why I need feminism...

For anyone who doesn’t know who I am, I am an 18 year old woman and I began a Politics and International Relations degree in September 2017. I knew I was going to being into a world that was predominantly male, but i never expected to learn as much as I have at the end of my first year. 

The first sign I found that the world I was entering was even more unbalanced than I had previously thought was when I walked into my first lecture on my very first day. The class was made up of all students that were doing Politics as a single or joint honours course, I walked in and my male lecturer was standing by the podium an sitting in the classroom were 6 men. Soon after I sat down the register was passed to me, as I scanned down the 22 names on the register, I noticed that there was only one other female on the list. By the end of the first lecture, I had been talked over, spoken down to and ignored by my male counterparts. I wish I could of said that I was surprised but I really wasn’t. 

The second sign I had was just the next day, I walked into my second class of my university career and this was the first time that I would be in a class that was made up of only people on my exact course. In that class I learnt that there were four of us including me. I had thought that the worst that could happen was that I would be ignored again but the second day was much worse than the first. In this class I was told by a class mate, lets call him Luke (NOT HIS REAL NAME) that I had chosen the wrong course because the only degree a girl would excel in would be one that involved children, I was told I would never get anywhere in my chosen career because it is a not a girl’s place to talk about important issues such as politics. 

The third and most defining moment of this year was when I was assigned a group presentation as one of my last assessments of my first year. Around this time I was told by some of the men in my class that I had befriended that the partner I had been assigned, Luke, was currently under investigation and possible expulsion for attempting to rape a woman on a night out. When I was told this I went to the head of my department to ask if I could do my presentation alone as I felt unsafe being alone with him. My lecturer asked me if it was because of the rumours that I felt unsafe and I told him yes but that I had previously felt uncomfortable around him anyway. My lecturer then proceeded to tell me that the rumours were true and that an investigation was underway but that should not make me feel unsafe. I asked him why I shouldn’t feel unsafe around the man who was accused of attempted rape and he then proceeded to explain to me that the girl was drunk and that he was taking care of her. I told him I was friends with Luke’s roommate who had found him half undressed with the girl unconscious on his bed. I asked him why he was half undressed if he was just taking care of her, why he hadn’t called security if she was unresponsive and i asked him if he was taking care of her why had he taken an unconscious girl that he didn’t even know the name of back to his room. The head of my department did not have any response to give me. I sat in his office for 30 minutes discussing whether it was valid for me to feel uncomfortable around Luke. I sat in his office for 30 minutes explaining to him that there was no possible reality where I would be doing this presentation with Luke. After 30 minutes of complete refusal from myself, the head of my department allowed me to do my presentation alone.

So, in the past nine months, I have gained first hand experience of why feminism is so important and a lesson that I thought I had already known. There will always be someone who is trying to make you quiet, somebody trying to make you shut up, just know that you never should. Be the loudest voice in the room, we are the ones trying to change history, trying to change expectations. This point was made for me when I was given the highest score in my final presentation, and Luke ended up failing his.
