Managing your Time to Study More
One thing about college that you donât hear that often is how precious a commodity time is. On some days, youâll find your schedule so slammed that you wonât even have time to grab a decent meal due to all the studying youâre doing.
This is precisely why effective time management is an important skill that every student needs to be good with in order to study better at school. Think about it, if you could get your assignments done on time, have proper study hours and still have a private life, arenât you going to have a better classroom experience?
Here are some ways to get there.
Understand that you canât manage time
Time is concrete. There are only 24 hours in a day, and no matter what you do, thereâs no way to change that. What you can do however, is adjust your use of time. Remember, it all start with managing oneâs habits, tasks and rituals.
Identify time-wasters
Every student out there is bound to be wasting time on something unproductive, be it the occasional daydream after lunch, spending too much time on Facebook, playing video games too much, and more. That said, try to keep track of how you spend your daily time. Write down what you do on a daily basis for at least a week or so; be sure to include insignificant activities so you get a comprehensive look at how you spend your time.
Set Goals
If you look up tips on how to quit smoking, completely dropping the habit right away isnât a good idea. The same applies to time management. Once youâve identified your time wasters, don't make sweeping changes immediately, because you wonât be effective that way. Instead, focus on small gains by setting weekly time management goals. For example, if you spend too much time on Facebook, set a goal to go online only during breaks.
Learn when to hit two birds with one stone, and when not to
Multitasking is a must in college if you want to have time to do the things you want, but it should be done for specific activities. For example, if you want to get some exercise, walk the long route to class every day. But when it comes to activities like eating for example, I recommend against it. Ample time should be set aside for you to eat, and no, eating while on the go is a bad idea as it is unhealthy.Â
