Something I think ppl who aren't used to it struggle with when it comes to ancient history is that frequently 'we do not and cannot know this' is the only truthful response a historian can give. People severely overestimate how much we actually know about Ancient Rome.

I remember talking to someone at a party once about the debate over Septimius Severus's ethnicity (whole other can of worms) and they asked if genetic testing of his remains was not a way to settle it and I was like oh. Oh okay you are under the impression we have the physical remains of Roman emperors from the second century AD alright then. (We. Do not.)

Can't stress how much of high level study of Ancient History is devoted to trying to make sense of what actually factually happened. When I was at university (10+ years ago now) the discipline was embroiled in the lengthy and ongoing process of trying to unpack not just the biases in ancient sources but the centuries & centuries of biases within the field itself. I don't imagine this process is ever going to Stop. It's not uncommon for historical accounts to be so garbled & contradictory that it's not possible to reconstruct the real events behind them.

Once in an introductory lecture one of my professors was talking about this problem and articulated it very simply as 'we know real things happened between real people, but we aren't sure what they were'. Sums it up really!!

Maybe it's naive of me, but whenever I see portraits like this, with just a father and daughter, it restores my faith in humanity a little. Because people seem to love this idea that fathers never loved their daughters in the past and only saw them as bargaining chips for marriage or whatever, but look at the guy in the first portrait on the left, he loves that little girl! And the dad trying to do his work while his daughter bothers him with an Old Timey Barbie. The man teaching his daughter geography, his expression is so soft! The way the man in the last portrait holds the little girl's hand! And none of these are incidental, these aren't photographs, someone (probably the father) paid good money and sat down for hours so that they could have a painting of themselves and their daughter. Probably because they loved their daughter.

oh I love those! People being people is one of my favourite kinds of paintings and an important reminder that people in past times were not all that different. There were dads who loved their daughters fiercely. There were fathers who happily looked after their babies too. The German reformer Philip Melanchton for example had a cradle in his office. His wife was busy organising a household for 20 people- she was out and about, he mostly worked in his office, it made sense for him to look after their babies too babies while she dropped by at snack time.

in fact often if it was kind of safe dads had the babies in their workshops for just that reason as we can see in these paintings:

The left is “the busy father” by Theodore Weber, the right one is “At the china repairer’s “ by Wenzel Tornoe. All dads who are actively involved in childcare and a painter who thought it was a cute topic rather than anything ridiculous.

The inspo for Maddox suit was this post doing the rounds on tumblr but actually i didn't do it on purpose i just drew it and saw it again on the dash and i was like oh fuck true i got it from there. The circlet of course to point at the thing that would be a "flaw" or weakness but as a strenght and something to call attention to as a nice thing (wich is pretty Vivienne style oh how she presents as a court mage and also what she advises Bull to do to have a gold and amethyst eyepatch).

Vivienne outfit is a combination of these 2 concepts of her from the artbook + horns cause she looks amazing with them

Leliana had to have a bird inspired mask of course for the crows and the nightingale, and a bit on the chantry sister decorations to represent the inquisition (at least i imagine the color palette of the chantry outfit from dao she first appeared as) also a little rose for hope <3

For Josephine the inspo was this dress and also that im gay and wanted to see her with her hair down. In the end I changed her mask cause that one wasn't fancy enough. In my mind they are all full of jewwelry and shit but im not drawing that to survive drawing it in many panels. Imagine the fancy jewelry in my honor pls.

I also had refs for cullen outfit but i have sadly lost them dfgniodgfg anyways at first i was gonna give him a lion mask cause he has one in one of the trailer but I was like "what treacherous ferelden would bear the fucking symbol of orlais. actually why the fuck does cullen have a lion mask the fucking symbol of orlais" and it was to fix an animation mistake apparently. idk why they had a lion mask done in 3d tho. Anyways i was like "ok lets go full ferelden is mabari time" but it does look a bit like a bdsm puppy mask,,,, i asked the people in my other blog "hey should i change it" and everyone said to keep it tho

I'm gonna be honest with krem and cass i just used outfits i designed long ago for some OCs of mine who never saw the light of day but i liked the outfits so i had to use them. Both of them are armour people who would had rather wear fancy armor to the ball but such is life and they dont wear what they want. I wouldn't put cass in a dress cause she wouldnt had let anyone do that to her except that fucking divine outfit i guess. And also cause she is hot in a suit. Both have capes cause I love capessss <3 and krem has a bull mask in honor of the bull's chargers obvs and cass has a knight mask one cause i'm a lesbian and i think that is hot as hell

every time i start to feel cringe for being too deep in the hyperfixation i remember the intense depression i have waded through and have to remind myself that enjoyment is fleeting (so grab it with both hands), and life is for loving (so hold that love close), and if anyone thinks i’m cringe they must not be having a very good time (and i hope they can find a good time soon).
