I made a keychain! I would consider this my first complete project, I started with some scraps, a blunt canvas needle, cheap cotton thread, an ice pick, shoe polish kit, wood carving knives, beeswax, and two sharpies.
Is it objectively good? FUCK no. But I'm proud of the job I did with the experience I have (literally none)
Edges were "burnished" with my thumb and a brick of wax. I think it looks okay, but next time I'm going to try cutting off the ragged inside edge with a razor blade and lightly sanding before waxing. I also wish my cuts were more straight.
Hole punching with an ice pick sucks. The taper was wide enough that it left gaping holes on the front without penetrating all the way through. Also due to the diameter of the spike I had to push really really hard to punch all the way through. This meant that the needle didn't go all the way through every time! I'm very glad I didn't break it, but this really wasn't a good way of doing it.
All in all, for a first try with no proper tools, I think it turned out quite well. I'll also do edges before I stitch it together. Lesson learned!
