it's really crazy just how acceptable it is to beat your kids. I think across my entire childhood, probably the greatest betrayal I felt was in elementary school when I told the school counselor that my dad was hitting me a lot, and he just did not regard it as particularly interesting information. He changed the subject and moved on. It's crazy that there are really generally no consequences for it.
