Rape, Assault TW

Today I was on Facebook and someone I know decided to post about how we do teach men not to rape and that it’s also on women to learn how to best avoid being raped and this was my response; 

“Women are literally taught from their early teen years how to "avoid" being raped (though, really, it's not up to us. If someone wants to assault us, they will find a way). We're told to carry pepper spray, to walk with our keys between our knuckles, to never walk alone, to always have a guy escort us, to carry larger objects like umbrellas because they deter potential assaulters, to watch what we wear because we're going to be "distracting" or like a piece of meat to guys, to not wear our hair a certain way because it is easier to grab. The list goes on and on. But, when we do these things, we also anger the men who think "Well, I would never do this so she should never take these precautions with me" (even though women are more likely to be assaulted/raped by someone they know per this CDC article;http://www.usnews.com/.../cdc-1-in-5-women-raped-often-by...). Telling women constantly that they need to take these precautions sends the message "If you don't do these perfectly, it is your fault if something happens to you" and that is the reason so many cases of rape go unreported in this country. These precautions also send the message "Make sure he rapes the other girl." There will always be someone more drunk or more vulnerable and the only way to truly protect us from rape and assault is to teach people (and I say people because both men and women have the capabilities to rape and assault a person) that another person's body is NOT theirs for the taking. No one is ever asking for assault.”

I have absolutely zero time for anyone who thinks rape is the fault of anyone but the fucking rapist. I had no choice when I was made to fear for my life in a sexual encounter. I had no choice when I had to deal with the emotional trauma it caused. I am tired of people thinking that assault is avoidable.
