replied to your post : but see what really bothers me is that if Marvel…
I won’t boycott it, nor will I encourage others to boycott it. Mostly I’ll be disapponted, but not surprised. I very likely will skip seeing it in theaters and just wait to Redbox it.
I dunno… I still don’t understand that. Casting a PoC to play Peter Parker would be cool, but it’s not something they should be EXPECTED to do. They shouldn’t be expected to change their most recognized, flagship character.
Like, at what point did “Wouldn’t it be cool if -” become “if they don’t do this I’ll be disappointed”? There’s a lot of things I WISH would happen in the movies - but it doesn’t mean that just because Marvel didn’t do my cool “what if” idea, I dislike the movie or won’t go see it in theaters.
Would it be cool if they put the new Female Thor into the MCU? Yeah, but i’m not disappointed in the existing Thor films for NOT doing that. Would it be cool if they made Falcon into the new Captain America, like they did in the comics? Yeah, but I’m not disappointed in the existing Captain America films for NOT doing that.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m not at all against PoC Peter Parker. Personally, Spider-man has always been my favorite super hero and the one I identify with the most, so if my opinion mattered, I’d say give us the comic book Peter in just one MCU movie and then bring in Miles Morales or whoever you want, but I understand the demands for diversity. In the end I’m perfectly fine with a PoC Peter as long as his character stays the same.
I just think this whole thing has been blown WAY out of proportion at this point and now people are expecting Peter Parker to be a PoC and will be mad at Marvel for not fulfilling this in-no-way-canon fan wish. And if they DO cast a PoC, it will be seen as fan service, like they’re “pandering” to everyone that’s demanding it. It would have been much better if it had been Marvel’s decision; if they had cast a PoC without all the fans demanding it.
I dunno. That’s just my opinion, I guess.
I’m seeing this as an issue of differing perspectives on media representation. From the public’s perspective, we’ve had two white Spidermans (not under Marvel of course, but that…doesn’t really make that much of a difference honestly), and there’s a lot of people who are hoping to see something different. I mean, as much as there isn’t necessarily a reason for him to be a PoC, there also isn’t any particularly good reason for him NOT to be, especially not when historically, superheroes have changed their images quite often. So then the question is, why not?
Besides, what makes him iconic isn’t the color of his skin, but the fact that Peter Parker is a wise-cracking teenager who loves photography and the fact that he is Spiderman. It sounds like we’re on the same page about that though.
I mean from the perspective of a demographic that is highly underrepresented in mainstream media, it is very disappointing when, at a series reboot, when there is a reasonable chance of seeing yourself represented but you don’t. Instead you see the same old type of person, who you see cast as the main character in pretty much every other popular movie out there. Like we’re getting to a point where people are recognizing that they want to see themselves reflected in the faces of main characters in their favorite story lines, so in the instances where there’s no really particularly compelling reason for the character not to be PoC, but a white person is cast anyway, it really makes them wonder “Well, why not?” Because if not now, then when?
As for pandering, if a PoC gets cast as a main character who has a complex, fully-developed story arc as a result, I’d say they can pander all they want. I don’t really see why it’s really a bad thing in this case.
Idk. If seeing yourself and people like you more often in the media as complex, complete, non-stereotypical, super-powered human beings is pandering, then please. Pander to us.

Warrior : Ancient Indian Martial Arts
just fuck me up
A village in rural India has started a new tradition to honor girls — every time a girl is born, 111 trees are planted in celebration on the village commons! The village is located in the state of Rajasthan, a region with such a strong preference for boys that the sex ratio is now skewed to 928 women for every 1000 men. The village of Piplantri, whose tree-planting project has transformed it into a green oasis with a quarter of a million new trees planted over the past six years, is leading the way on changing attitudes on how girls are valued.
The initiative was started by the former village head, Shyam Sundar Paliwal, in memory of his daughter Kiran who died in 2007. In addition to tree-planting, the community also makes a collective investment in their girls. When a girl is born, parents sign an affidavit agreeing to educate their daughter and not to marry her until she reaches the legal age. In return, the whole community contributes to her future financial well-bring: the villagers donate 21,000 Rupees ($335) to the parents’ contribution of 10,000 Rupees ($160), all of which is deposited in a bank account that cannot be accessed until the girl turns 20 years old.
Over the six years the program has been going on, the impact on the village of 8,000 has been dramatic. In addition to making the area around the village lush and green, it has also brought economic and social benefits to the community as a whole. To help protect the trees from insects, the villagers have planted over 2.5 million Aloe vera plants around them which they now harvest sustainability to produce a variety of Aloe-based products for sale. And, most importantly, in a region with a deeply entrenched preference for boys, Piplantri is showing how honoring girls not only empowers girls and women, it uplifts entire communities.
The Princess is everything Luke wants to be. She is socially conscious, whereas he is thrown into things; intellectually, she is a strong leader, and he is just a kid.
- George Lucas
People often talk about how Han influenced Luke, but we should also look at how Leia influenced Luke.
(via apolla-savre)
I’ve always really liked this idea—that they’re the exact same age, but their different lives have given them very different levels of maturity, and Luke is envious, but fascinated, and idolizes her a bit.
(via another-skywalker)
It’s kind of weird to think of Han as being a big influence compared to Leia. I mean, yes, they were close. But it’s made reasonably obvious that close male friends aren’t something Luke’s ever lacked. If anything, I’d say they’re mutually influential. Han’s experience and training help temper Luke’s youth and inexperience, and his cynicism demands that Luke account for his own faith. Luke, in turn, cracks Han’s shell with hope and faith, and his earnest belief that Han can be better than what he’s let himself become won’t let him crawl back into the hole he’s dug for himself.
But Leia?
I mean, come on. Luke’s got these vague intentions to run away and do…something. He’s dissatisfied with his home life, he’s dissatisfied with the future he sees for himself, and he resents, in an equally vague way, the expectations of his family. He thinks of joining the rebellion because he’s romanticized it. He thinks of going to the academy because it’s anywhere but where he’s at. All of his ambitions amount to this sort of nebulous, Anything But What I Have aspiration. He goes running after Kenobi on the strength of a shitty, recorded hologram because it seems exciting. He has no real idea about what this sort of mission would entail, or cost, or achieve. It’s an Adventure, and he’s bored.
Then he meets Leia, and she’s literally everything he ever had some mindless daydream about being. Only instead of being a cardboard cut-out hero in some story he’s using to distract himself from a shitty frontier subsistence-farmer life, she’s a real person who’s actually fucking doing it. She’s a leader. She’s a fighter. She’s risking life and limb for a cause she completely and utterly understands and absolutely believes in. This isn’t some thing she ran away to do because she got sick of being a princess and a senator. People look up to her, and follow her, and obey her, because she’s spent her life earning it.
He’s looking around and going “Empire bad? We blow up ships?” and she’s going “Here’s ten political treatises on why the Empire needs to go, here are the details of troop movements and expected reinforcements and supply lines for the upcoming battle, and here are the family photos of everybody in the next ten systems that are going to get stomped into bloody paste in retaliation if we fail here.” He finds her, and within five minutes she’s gone from the princess he’s rescuing because that’s what action heroes do to the person he needs to emulate if he’s ever going to make something of himself.

I’ve never been a big fan of Uptown Funk, but this mix with Seven Nation Army makes the whole song sound so… evil. I love it.

Tiffany Espensen is a 16 year old Chinese American actress (born in China and adopted by American parents). She is fluent in Mandarin. She’s of Cantonese descent. She did work for Disney. Mulan was a 16 year old Chinese girl. Who better to play her than a 16 year old talented Chinese actress? Don’t whitewash Mulan. Don’t let this be another case of Tiger Lily. She is perfect for this role. PERFECT.
I JUST LOVE THE FACT THAT THE SUBMARINE HAS A MANUAL WINDOW CRANK
Fun fact: you wouldn’t actually be able to open any window if the submarine was submerged past about 5 ft deep. The weight of the water pressing in would make the glass pane impossible to move. (Watch the Underwater Car Escape episode of Mythbusters if you need an example.)
He didn’t have to.
