Trying a new style for faces? Just because I couldn't get Grace's features right ? It's more likely than you think.
In hopes it hypes me up to start a little comic for their meeting! (haha, look at me, promising myself things like that)
Soooo... I fell into the Project Hail Mary fandom (and RGCU too but that's another rabbit hole). The movie was so good, the characters made me weep, the soundtrack is immaculate. And I never read a book so fast in my life.
And now Cal Kestis and BD-1 have to share their place as favorite characters ever in my heart with Saviors of the Universe, Dr. Captain Ryland Grace and Rocky.
I want to see or read them interact like.. it would be so interesting??? Two pair that you cannot separate, destined to find each other, dare I say soulmates, all guided by hope. Their respective missions mainly fueled by wanting to save the future generation.
Grace and Rocky with the Mantis Crew ! Cal and Grace both being touch-starved tired humans who need to SLEEP, Grace immediately seeing that Cal was robbed of his childhood, Cal picking up echoes of Grace, living THAT haunting chase scene... BD-1 and Grace talking about struggling with amnesia, BD-1 trying to ease the never ending pain in Grace burned arm and fragile bones, Grace giving him little scritches on the head and nearly crying every time he SITS because? It's so cute???? Or even Cere and Grace talking about their love for teaching, their students being their main reason to fight. Greez putting some food in that poor man, getting to see the Hail Mary and marveling at what a beauty she is. Merrin falling in love with Earth the more Grace talk about it, him showing her the "Don't go crazy room" and every thing Earth has to offer.
Rocky and Cal bonding over engineering and spaceship, Rocky being curious about light saber because he can hear it but not "see" the light itself, Cal helping with the xenonite suit so he can upgrade from the hamster ball, Rocky watching Cal and Grace sleeps. BD-1 and Rocky immediatly hitting off, little droid chirps and whale songs strangely letting them communicate easily, the Eridian letting the droid scanning every inches of him. Rocky telling Cere the story being each of his markings, learning about tattoos. Greez being annoyed by Rocky being a menace but accepting him because he watches the kid sleep, and also because Rocky thinks Greez is the best designed being in the Mantis with his four arms. Rocky and Merrin bonding over the fact that they had to bury (or whatever Rocky did for his crewmates) their friends who they couldn't save, and being little shits to Greez.
Grace would be obsessed by the Midichlorians and Rocky would be so so sooo curious about Ilum and the Kyber Crystal songs.
And now I need to draw all of that (also PHM had me a little to hyped about Star Wars: Starfighter, woopsies)
Koboh has so much to offer and so many characters whom which Cal vibes so well with, it was too difficult to choose one thing so here we are, Cal thinking with a peaceful smile of all the people he met on Koboh.
Hair cut at Doma's (and looking at some new discutable fashion choices), playing Holotactics with Bhima and Tulli, diving with Skoova to look at the fishies, gardening with Pili, negociations with the Jawas and fixing whatever Turgle did to make them angry...
And a little Spider-Man Meme because the scene with Caij and Boba made me think of it. (Better quality meme under the cut)
Who I am if not a good person to give Cal a good nap in the grass on Bogano after seeing him picking a blade of grass as soon as he left the Mantis and Cere to go explore the planet. And with an affectionate BD-1 and a plush- erm, a Bogling to keep him in the perfect company EVER.
Cal got a sunburn after this but, hey, it was worth it (Greez does NOT approve)
I hate Sorc Tormo with a passion, because of him I had to draw an Oggdo!! (and Cal had to fight one, poor soul). BUT he has very good taste in music (Cal approves) so he his HALF forgiven.

I don't think Cal has been back on Coruscant in over 10 or 12 years. He was once a happy-go-lucky, ever curious and rowdy padawan, playing with the Clones and pranking Jedi Masters and Temple Guards.
Cal was so heartbroken to see the imperial banner on the walls of the place he once called his home.
I personally think that even in the rush to hide, Cal still took the time with the little means he had to do a funeral pyre for his master, burning his corpse with the the escape pod, hiding any trace of his own survival and throwing his padawan braid in the fire, which hat he had to cut himself.

I recently taken an interest in Tintin (being French, I surprisingly didn't grow up with those stories) and the similarities would not stop piling up ! A young redhead, throwing himself into danger and always being hit on the head; and his little fearless white companion who is always saving his best friend butt... let's say I immediately took a liking to our boy reporter who is just... Cal if he was Belgian.

Cal stands at the bottom of the ramp and stares up at Greez, haloed in the shipâs internal lighting. âHuh?â
Greez points, specifically at the poncho Cal as clutched in his hand. âNo more. Not a single one. By the gods, Cal, I can smell the damn thing from here.â
Cal holds it up to demonstrate the very funky pattern it has. Best of all, itâs a nice, thick wool. Once itâs clean and dry, itâll be a favourite for sure. âI need it, Greez. Itâs mine.â
âI understand and accept that five years on Bracca has ruined your sense of smell, but me and Cere? Ours is fine. And as such, we can smell that little poncho selection of yours no matter what we do. So, the following are your options â get rid of them all and weâll find you a nice new one in a store that doesnât sell actual biohazards.â
âNot happening.â
BD backs him up with a rude squeal.
Hands held up in a pacifying gesture, Greez waits for silence. âOr you stay out there and do some laundry.â
The sky overhead is thick with the promise of a snowstorm. Calâs hands are cold and stiff from his journey across Zeffo. Heâs tired and hungry, thoughts of dinner getting him through the lengthy journey back to the ship. He doesnât particularly want to stay outside, but he also refuses to give up a single one of his ponchos. Theyâre his. All of them. He found them, and sure, maybe some are coated in mildew, and others have a smell he canât quite get rid of, but none of them are actual biohazardsâŠ
âŠare they?
âAre they?â he asks BD.
BDâs scans suggest a couple might host bacteria unsafe for most organics, and while he has no capacity to smell, scans would indicate unpleasant odours would be a side effect of said bacteria.
âFine,â Cal says. âI guess itâs laundry day.â
Greezâs ominous laugh echoes down from the ship. âI knew youâd say that.â He returns with a large container (honestly, itâs large enough to stuff Greez himself into). âFill this with water. Iâve got various detergents to clean these things up.â
âI do wash them!â Cal insists.
âWith appropriate laundry detergents, or with soap when you shower? Or does going for a swim in a poncho count as washing them?â
Opting for tactical silence, Cal places the new poncho into the container and plods onto the ship with it. He fills the container in the shower as it wonât fit under the sink, then lugs it back outside. He places it down and returns to the engine room to fetch all his ponchos. He puts them all inside.
âNow, watch a master at work.â Greez adds a blend of detergents and something called fabric conditioner to the water. It all sounds like a waste of credits to Cal. Greez also adds an entire bottle of disinfectant and gives the whole barrel a mix with a stick. âWeâre gonna let this stew for a while before you heft it all back inside and stick them in the machine to spin. After that, weâll bring them back out here to air dry. Might take a while, given how cold it is, but it will help with the stench.â
âAre they really that bad?â
âWorse.â
âIâm sorry, Greez.â
Greez looks up from his stirring. âWhy do you always make me feel so bad about stuff, even when youâre in the wrong and Iâm definitely in the right?â
BD suggests itâs a Jedi thing. Cal smiles. âI didnât mean to,â he offers.
âSee? There you go doing it again. Listen, kid, honestly, I wish you wouldnât bring back stuff you find on these planets. Iâm sure we can find you something during a supply run. However, I get that you like them and therefore you gotta meet me midway â keep âem, but clean âem. Properly. None of your wash your clothes while you shower or swim nonsense. And if youâre taking a breath to tell me thatâs how it was done on Bracca, I do not wanna know.â
Cal breathes out and closes his mouth.
âYou donât have to live like youâre a credit away from financial ruin. Weâre not multimillionaires, but weâre not broke. And if you donât know how to use the machine, ask. Iâm not gonna judge.â
âThanks, Greez.â
âAnd maybe donât stuff wet clothes into a box under your bed.â
