‶ no one else is available ! ″ probably an exaggeration on his part , but people like to take the day off on holidays . . . though nigel never did . this was the exact reason why . if there was an emergency he always needed to be able to take care of it , especially if there was no one else capable of doing so . ‶ it’s my duty , lizzie ! i know it’s not ideal , i would love more than anything to spend the day with you . it pains me as much as it does you , but those kids NEED me . i can’t just abandon them . could you imagine a world without chocolate ? in which kids will never be allowed to partake in that rich , delicious treat ever again ? ″

his obvious surprise at being bombarded with affection isn’t anything out of the ordinary, if anything, it was common for them . it’s cute to her, when her boyfriend is a little embarrassed when she shows him affection . she’d usually think the soft laughter was endearing, but - did she hear that tone ? the tone that said he was about to -

- and there it was . he didn’t have to go on, she knew almost instantly . her expression goes from denial, to frustration, and settles on dejected sadness as she pulls her arms away from him . she visibly wilts, eyes shifting back and forth as she glances at the floor . finally, she’s looking at him again .

“ you … can’t make time at all ? on Valentine’s day ? “ she asks, even though she likely knows the response . she should be used to things like this by now . but it’s a special day . isn’t it ? she tries to keep the slight pleading tone from her voice, but doesn’t really succeed .

‶ it’s not that i don’t want to , lizzie . ″ nigel quickly has to make that clear , but it still feels awful to say . he hates upsetting her , but his word did always come first . he knew lizzie would never fully understand his duty to the kids next door , he’s tried to explain it many times over , but just because he was dedicated to his job didn’t mean that he didn’t want the relationship to work .

‶ it’s just . . . this morning i got informed that the adults are banding together to melt all of the world’s chocolate supply into one huge mega - chocolate for them to enjoy on valentines ! if that happens then no kid will be able to enjoy chocolate again . i just CAN’T let that happen . kids need to be able to hand out chocolates to their friends and crushes on valentines day ! surely you can understand . ″

‶ eddy , is it ? ″ he straightens his posture , looking down at the other kid with a frown on his face . he places both his hands on his hips . multiple kids in town had pointed him in the direction of this kid , and based on description he believes that he’s found who he was looking for .

‶ i am numbuh one of the kids next door . ″ he ALWAYS has to start with the formalities ( he totally doesn’t rehearse this stuff, he swears ! ) . ‶ over the past summer we have gotten multiple reports of a trio of kids in this cul - de - sac attempting to scam other kids out of their allowances . we were unable to respond to them right away , but given how frequently we have gotten them from various sources it became an issue we could no longer move to the side . if my reports are correct , you’re the supposed ringleader of this operation . i need to ask you to cease this behavior at once or else we will need to shut down these schemes by force . ″

‶ what IS that ? ″ nigel peers over the girl’s shoulder , looking towards the book she was reading . while he wasn’t a COMPLETE stranger to the idea of paranormal happenings , he was never fully involved in them . in fact , nigel tended to stay away from any horror - esque things in general . so , seeing pages filled with odd pictures he didn’t understand certainly caught him by surprise . enough to actually comment on it .

He settled on the message; "You don't suck as a leader and friend most of the time. Happy valentines i guess."

she catches him off guard , a yelp escaping him as she’s pulled into a hug without any mental preparation . he had been in the middle of checking his L.U.N.C.H.B.O.C.K.S. --- he had gotten mission specs this morning and was working out a plan on how to complete them quickly and efficiently . especially since most of his team had chosen to take this day off . seriously , would it kill them to have a little more dedication ? ? ?

‶ ahahahaha . . . ″ a nervous laugh , a bit of blush comes across his cheeks as he lightly rubs the area she kissed with his hand . it’s not that he didn’t want to . he would absolutely love to spend time with lizzie today if time allowed for it . what better day to spend with your girlfriend ?

‶ i picked up an extra one at the cafeteria and thought you might want it . even leaders need milkshake breaks , you know ? ″

he nearly leaps out of his skin as he hears his codename called, whipping his head around towards his leader . he looks pretty messy himself - more disheveled than normal, soda stains on his clothes . in one hand, he grips a mostly-empty soda can that’s still dripping on the floor, and in the other, he angrily holds one of the hamsters .

seeing numbuh one’s facial expression is enough to make him release the hamster, which huffs, blows a raspberry at numbuh four, and scurries off .

“ n - numbuh one, this is not what it looks like ! “ he points accusingly at the hamsters already escaping via elevator . “ those rats set me up ! it wasn’t me ! well, kinda - but - ugh ! point is, they started it ! “

‶ how many times do i have to tell you to stop provoking the hamsters ? ″ a slightly aggravated sigh , hand coming up to adjust his sunglasses . he leaves for a few hours on a mission and this is what he comes back to ? it’s ridiculous !
