âAll due respect, River, but your voice is pretty recognizable. She could have been listening, too. You know how she got her âbetterâ stories. She went insect and listened in. It wasnât as if she couldnât have done that to someone who was listening in on Potterwatch.â
Recognizable? Not from Quidditch. Lee's voice was recognizable for a shitty, sickening, infuriating reason.Voldemort had taken over, spread confusion, uncertainty, ruled in shadows and whispers. He'd taken over the Ministry, the WWN, everything. Muggle-borns were asked to register, were interrogated, and if they refused they were forced to flee--people like Lee's mother.Â
"I found your hat,"said Lee holding it out to her. She moved forward, but instead of reaching for her hat, hugged him.Lee closed his eyes, breathing in her scent, wishing things were simple again and could be solved with a hug, but he wasn't a child anymore. He tried to pull away. She didn't let go.
"Come with us,"she whispered."Please..."Â
"You'll have Dad. I'll be fine."
"You can't promise that. You don't remember. You were too young. You'll be safer away from the Order.Tell them to get someone else..."
She pulled away, her eyes flashing,"You keep saying that, but you don't!" Lee finally met her gaze. Her anger shrank away. She stepped closer, and adjusted his collar, and brushed imaginary lint off his shoulder before looking at his face again."Stay with us.Stay with me."
"Mum, I want to...I can't."
"You shouldn't need to hide."
The people at the WWN had a reason for their silence. They were probably just as terrified as everyone else or just as deeply sunk into denial. It didn't excuse what they had done, but Lee could understand it even if their actions still angered him. Rita Skeeter had lied during peace, continued in the midst of war, and now in it's aftermath was scavenging and scraping for more to twist and warp.
âWho gives a rip if McGonagall does double duty? Sheâs doing a hell of a job keeping this train wreck in order, the woman deserves a god damned medal. Rita Skeeter wonât find anything because McGonagallâs done nothing but be a freaking saint. I wouldnât worry.â
"I'm not worried about that.I don't want her near me. I don't want her near anyone here. And McGonagall can ban her from the grounds, but that won't stop her. She'll wait at Hogmeade, she'll flatter, she'll pounce on someone who doesn't see her for what she is and--I know I'm overreacting. I know. There's nothing I can do about her. She's not even the only person I--I'm just focusing on her. I-- "He closed his eyes, inhaled and exhaled. "Ugh.I can't live like this. I can't live the rest of my life like this. We were trying to stop the hate. And here I am and I can't let go..."
