do u ever feel like you’ve accidentally tricked certain people into thinking you are smarter and have more potential than you actually do and do you ever think about how disappointed they’ll be when you inevitably crash and burn
Yes. It’s called Imposter Syndrome! It’s incredibly common (REALLY common), especially among women. Imposter Syndrome is a state of mind in which you are convinced that your successes and accomplishments are either just because of luck or circumstance, or that they don’t exist at all and that you’ve just fooled people into believing you’ve accomplished something. It’s very stressful because you’re also convinced that people are going to discover that you’re a fraud. One way to avoid “being discovered” is to outwardly downplay and devalue your accomplishments. This way, you’re telling people to expect less of you so they won’t be disappointed in you later on. Another way to do this is to avoid taking on professional/academic projects that might help your career. If you’re convinced you’re going to be found out as a fraud, you’re not going to try to compete with a qualified coworker for the same high-profile client, are you? And then, of course, you create a self-fulfilling prophecy. If you never try to move upwards (because you’re convinced you’d fail), people will stop providing you with opportunities to do so. If you downplay your accomplishments, people will believe that your accomplishments aren’t so great and will treat you that way. And what’s so frustrating is that, well, you’re NOT a fraud. You haven’t fooled anyone–there’s no lie being told. You really DID do all those great things. You really ARE capable. It wasn’t luck or chance or circumstance–it was you! If the original post describes how you feel, I urge you to look up Imposter Syndrome and start treating yourself better!
This feels really familiar…

I'm here, I'm queer, and I'm fucking tired
I’ve been shoving emotions into padlocked boxes since Sunday. Reblog, retweet, struggle with the complexity of being queer along axes of privilege, get out of the way, make brief comments that skim the surface of the abyssal depths of grief, rage, frustration, try to parse out things for straight people I know don’t mean harm but who don’t quite understand that my queerness has to matter to them and language is a thousand cuts when you’re already bleeding. Distract, compartmentalize, back away from the parade of bigoted hypocrisy and casual microaggressions from the earnest and well-meaning.
Deep breaths through the miasma of hate and erasure. I’ve been watching the Queer community die from bigotry for decades and our history is not taught. Our history is an oral tradition passed down from person to person, it’s small press and obscure texts and we are not visible as part of the whole and we have always been here and I am scared and heartbroken and I don’t know what to do with it.
And it’s 2016, when do we get better?
And it’s 2016 and when do we get more than a wedding ring?
And it’s 2016 and when do people who want us dead, who murder us, who terrorize us and ensure that we are always aware in our bones that the land of the free doesn’t mean ME, when we look in the mirror, when do they stop having the power to make us afraid?
And I don’t know how to process all of this into things that make sense and are kind and are a Whole of, “Here’s how to help or fix or get us to a safer place.”
I don’t know how to feel in a way that is safe to express because half of me wants to rage at the apathy and passive acceptance that does not shoulder any of the burden we bear, and half of me wants to just beg to be allowed to live and nothing makes sense but I have to stay calm and explain and I can’t start crying because I might never stop if I do.
I grew up feeling wrong, without the vocabulary to say to myself, “This is who I am and what it means.” I didn’t have the words with any certainty until I was 40. And thinking about all the kids who maybe don’t have unfettered access to the Internet and who now feel so afraid…
It’s 2016. When do we get better than this?
