Lecture 8 Reflection

Today’s class started off differently than those previous class. It started with a distribution of blue sticky notes each. We were instructed to write a short letter to our future self of 10 years and at the back of the note, to write a positive letter to the person sitting next to us.

Aside from that, we were given a situation before being introduced to the first application of the day. The situation is, “You are getting married and on an unfortunate luck, you have to make a wedding invitation card on your own.” Today’s first application is “autodraw.com”. This tool allows you to have an incredible drawing skills although you might not have artistic skills. It allows you to randomly draw shapes and the application’s algorithm will help you to detect what object that you’re trying to draw. There are a list of potential benefits and drawbacks of using this tool in a classroom filled with children:

1. Potential benefits:

It contains visual simulation – Stimulating and engaging especially for young learners.

May help students with motor skills issues to draw objects and build confidence.

2. Potential drawbacks:

It is hard to monitor the students, especially in large classes.

Limited features may lead to idleness or boredom.

Students may use it inappropriately to make offensive images.

The second tool that is being introduced to the class is “flipgird.com”. This tool is designed to promote open discussion between all students within the classroom. The lecturer created a classroom flipgrid with a question that allows students to state their opinion which is, “How do you feel about sexuality being fluid?” This application also contains the potential ways and disadvantage of using this tool in classroom:

1. Potential ways:

It is interactive.

Contains visual and audio.

Allows engagement – Students easily express their thoughts and opinions via videos.

2. Potential disadvantages:

It needs good qualities technology and accessible to internet connection.

Learners may use it to post inappropriate/unrelated content (although educators can look through before approving)

Difficult to manage.

Lastly, we discussed a few types of disabilities together which are dyslexia, autism spectrum, ADHD spectrum, depression spectrum and etc. We were given a situation to conduct a lesson that consists of 15 special abilities students which are of 10 – 12 years old. After having a brief discussion with my groupmates, we came to a consensus to divide the students into 3 groups. So there are 5 students per group and each group consists of 1 assistant teacher which will be called as “shadow aids”. Their roles are to help students to jot down their homework and guide them through during class lessons. Besides that, each students will have their own time slots for personal counselling at least once a month with their personal tutor. The lecturer shared her opinion regarding of the educators in this generation. She stated that educators are unable to handle students with spectrum in class because they do not have enough training. Educators should be trained constantly as mental health and disabilities spectrum are constantly evolving.

I really enjoy today’s lesson because it is a unique lesson that I have never encountered in any class during my education life. As an advance learner, today’s lesson had sparked an awareness in me regarding students with special abilities. This is because, the issues about the problems faced as an educator and as a student with special abilities is not widely spoken in the community that I live in. I believe that this issue is highly important and it should raise more awareness among the Malaysian as students with special abilities tend to be neglected in this country. I hope that in the future education system of Malaysia, educators are compulsory to undergo educator training.

Lecture 7 Reflection

In today’s lecture class, we had been introduced to 2 new applications that is useful for the education system. First of all, we were introduced to this application on Outlook called “SWAY”. This application allows individuals to create visual stimulating newsletters, presentations and documents. We were given a few minutes to experiment and explore the application. There are both advantages and disadvantages of using this application. This application is more appealing to young people due to the visual stimulation. Besides that, the visual stimulation and navigation allows a longer attention span of target audience.

Next, we were introduced to this website called “poll.excitem.com”. This website allows individuals to create new poll and receive answers anonymously. We were also given a few minutes to explore this website. An individual was given a chance to volunteer by asking a question to the class which was, “What keeps you alive?” and majority of the answers were ‘oxygen’. A few advantages of using this website was discussed together in class. This website is useful for feedback as it allows people to answer anonymously and instructor are able to know in general of the student’s feelings towards the particular lesson that was being taught. It also allows the students to engage with particular sensitive questions and opens a channel of honest and discussion learning.

Last but not least, we were instructed to plan a lesson plan among our group members on “How to love yourself/develop self-love” using song lyrics and 2 tools from those we learnt in class. The lesson plan was then presented by each group. This was the lesson plan that was discussed among my group members and me:

Phase 1: Based on current events, there is no prior knowledge of self-love by the students, ranging from the age of 13 to 17 years old.

Step 1: Ask them general questions/assume what self-love is

Step 2: Tools that we’re using: Webjets.com and SWAY

Phase 2: Planning for integration

Step 3: Teaching them about self-acceptance, how to gain self-esteem and how to explore the nature of self through quizzes and presentations

Step 4: Using SWAY by including music videos, graphical videos and images relating to the lyrics. Secondly, using Webjets.com by giving them an activity to do such as expressing themselves through blog based on self-love.

Step 5: Get them into small groups of 4-5

Phase 3: Post-instruction analysis & Revisions

Step 6: Analyse general feedback given by the students after the activities have been carried out.

Step 7: If there is a flaw in the current lesson plan, technological tools or any related tools will be revised.

I admit that as a student who’s constantly busy with studies and the daily routine, I tend to forget to prioritize myself first especially my mental health. As an advance learner, today’s class is a wake-up call for me as it shows me that self-love is the most important thing above else. Without self-love, we are unable to have a healthy and happy relationship with anyone including ourselves. I learned that having your own theme song can be one of the ways to remind yourself about self-love and as a motivation to continue surviving through the hardships of life.

I am not able to attend today’s class as I had been recently faced with some personal problems. Therefore, I have took a day off to regain my mental health.

Lecture 5 Reflection

(29 January 2019)

Today’s lecture topic is regarding the usage of social media platform in classroom and how it can affect the relationship between the students and the lecturer. The lecturer started off the lesson by asking us to form into a group of 5 and each group was given an article entitled, “Social Media & Classroom Engagement: Student’s Perception”. Each individuals need to participate actively by reading a paragraph each and to state the main points among the group members by the end of the reading task.

We were then given 2 questions related to this article which is, “What is the general conclusion of the article?” and “What do you personally think?” These questions were discussed together in the class. First of all, the usage of social media in classroom gives a positive effect to the student’s perception towards the lecturer. However, there are also the negative effects such as there are some lectures who tends to “stalk” a particular student’s social profile to look at their personal issues and involve it during the class. Based on my opinion, there is a benefit of using social media platform in class to a certain extend. The usage of social media platforms does not only allow lectures to play their role in the professional academia environment but it also allow them to build a closer bonding with the students.

Aside from the article discussion, we were also given a task which is to make a minimum of 3 memes within the same group mates.

We were then asked to email the memes to the lecturer. The memes that were made was shared on spot in the class. It was a really interesting to see everyone’s creativity and the fact that we all shared the same humour. Last but not least, we were asked to state the potential ways and drawbacks of using memes in a learning context. Here are the list of potential ways and drawbacks:

2. Make learning fun.

3. Developed students creativity.

· Potential drawbacks:

1. Takes a lot of time to prepare.

2. Have to make sure that it is relevant to the topic.

3. Needs to be funny/understood.

Today’s lesson had shown me that students doesn’t have to learn a particular subject in a stressful academia environment. Planning out a fun and educational activity in class can boost and enlighten the student’s day. As a future educator, it has given me an insight on the activities that I could apply to make the class a more fun, engaging and educational environment.

Personally, I think that today’s lecturer content was really interesting and the activities planned by the lecturer was really fun and engaging. In this 21st era, despite we all shared the differences of interest, but we all shared one thing in common which is memes.

Lecture 4 Reflection

In week 4, the class started off in a unique way. Before the lesson begins, each of us were given a few minutes to think of our own theme song. This task was then remained as a secret which creates the feeling of curiosity in me. We are only able to know the purpose of this task in the next lesson. We were introduced to the TechPack, TIP model and 4 new educational tools.

The TIP model is a method allows educator to integrate technology into teaching meanwhile the TechPack model is a method used by educators to design a lesson for each class. Here are the 4 technological tools with its potential benefits and drawbacks that is introduced in class today:

1. Geoguesser.com

It is a web-based geographic discovery game.

It allow you to learn more about places.

It can be an ice-breaking game for the starter of the geography class.

2. Webjets.io

This tool is a similar tool to a blog that allows you to collect, organise and share everything.

Students are able to express themselves freely.

It also helps students to organise things.

Students tend to get carried away.

3. Noisli.com

It is an application that have a range of fantastic background noise and colour generator for working and relaxing.

It helps individuals to relax and boost their productivity.

It also brings benefits to individuals who are in the spectrum.

4. Prowritingaid.com

It is a personal writing coach that helps you with grammar check, style editor and writing mentor.

It helps students to organised and improve their writing.

It helps students in their teacher-grading.

As an advance learner, these educational tools are benefits my daily tasks. As a student who constantly does a writing assignment, “prowritingaid.com” is able to be my writing mentor tool. “noisli.com” helps me to boost my productivity and reduces my stress and anxiety with its relaxing background noise. “webjets.io” is able to help me in terms of collecting and organizing my daily class or meeting schedules and some important information that is shared in class.

Lecture 3 Reflection

(15 January 2019)

In this lecture, I learned about the types of instructional technologies and the benefits and limitation of using instructional software. As usual, the lecture started off the class by stating the definition of instructional software, the types of instructional systems and products and also the overview of instructional software.

Besides that, we were given a 30 minute task to plan a lesson within our group members. There are several things that needs to be included in the lesson which are a fairly interesting lesson, age group, learning theory and software usage. This lesson needs to be presented after 30 minutes. After a brief discussion, my group and I have come to a consensus with a lesson plan that will be stated below:

Topic: How to preserve the environment

Age group: 10 – 12 years old

Learning theory: Behaviorist theory

Software usage:

Kahoot: A platform used as a quiz. Students with the highest point will earn a prize.

A recycling machine: This machine collects recyclable items. Each students who donated their recyclable items will be rewarded with points that will be registered into the card systems. At the same time, they are also able to learn about some interesting environmental facts when they donate their items.

It was really interesting to watch other groups present some interesting topics such as sex education, self-defense, ways to make Malaysian’s onde-onde and others.

As a future educator, I had learned that there are both benefits and limitations for any instructional software. Therefore, choosing suitable instructional software is really important for the content that will be taught in class.
