“Clark you need to listen to me!” You raise your voice at him. You corner him outside, where the cows were eating grass. Staying at his parents after he almost died in a pocket-universe, he got some needed rest.

“This isn’t about protecting me anymore, this is about ego!” You yell at him, pointing a finger at his chest. “I don’t want you-” The same exact excuse he had been giving you for years, but you had your own superpowers. “Don’t. Don’t give me the ‘I don’t want you to get hurt’ crap! This is not about that!” Your jaw grinding down, starting to get emotional.

“This is about ‘all mighty’ superman. Where is me in that picture? Where does your boyfriend belong in that picture huh? Where does your 8 year long boyfriend stand in that picture? Behind big, strong superman? I can fend for myself.” Eyes started to swell up. “How do you think i felt when i heard that you went in a POCKET-universe? You think it was fun to hear my boyfriend-” Your voice breaks. “I want to help the people here on earth for once, i also want to be the superhero. Okay? That’s all i want.” You shake your head out of anger, out of spite.

“No YOU listen.” Clark grabs you by the jaw lifting you up, not hurting you. “You think I want to do this alone? You think i like doing this alone, when i know my boyfriend is out there on another planet fighting? You think i went in that pocket-universe for fun? You don’t know what I went through in there!” He lets go of your jaw, turning around. You fall on your knees, hopeless. “Where do we go from here? How can we comeback from this?” He says softly, you could hear the hurt in his voice. You guys have had fights, fights. Really bad fights. But nothing like this. “Boys! There’s something on the box you’ll wanna see!” Ma’s voice broke the silence, gaining both your attention.

The three of you just stand there in silence, utter silence. You swallow your pride, tears in both your eyes. “I warned them this would happen.” Clark hopelessly whispered, gasping for air. You looked back at him, with tears in your eyes about to speak, but not knowing what to say. You walk over to him and just hug him, nothing else just a hug. Something else was wrong, you could feel it. You had that feeling you had when something was seriously happening. Something was happening somewhere. “What’s happening?” Clark asked you, feeling your aura change, familiar with your powers he knew it was bad. You turn around and focus. “It’s bad. We need to go to Metropolis, now.” You turn back towards clark. “But Jarhanpur, it needs me?” He looks concerned, tears long gone.

“There won’t be a Jarhanpur to save if we don’t go! Lex created a rift from his portal.” Leaving superman with a choice, he shook his head.

“I’ll go get your boots!” Ma says.

Something about your new-coworker seems suspicious, a little too familiar. Not in the way of “we have a past, I just suppress it because it is an ugly one.” but more of a, “I have definitely seen him somewhere, but where?” 

You can’t be too hung up on that either because maybe it is your sleep induced brain that kept you up all night, all because you for one decided to not have your usual ‘cynical city attitude’, the one you realised you needed to adapt to, in order to survive in big cities, but instead being a…good human. A person who doesn’t ignore someone in pain, even though said someone is not…the typical ‘human’ per say. 

What exactly was it that made you lose your sleep?

It began just a few hours ago. 

[ The previous night ]

Metropolis was different. But to you, all cities seemed to have the same thing. Quick-paced, impatient, usually people too caught up in their own lives. However, something about it seemed as if there was more to it than that, you just could not pinpoint it to one thing. 

Yes, having a superhero exist wasn’t maybe the norm for all cities, but it wasn’t uncommon. You may be new, but you weren’t unaware. The existence of superheroes in itself seemed more of a joke to you than anything worthy of needing. But hey, the only reason you could say that is because you didn’t need one anytime in your life. 

Nor did you think superheroes would need you, out of all people.

You were on the way back to your new apartment, after a while of exploring what exactly this city had to offer and before your first day of your internship from the next day, you decided to call it a night before you ended up being too exhausted to work. You didn’t want to make a bad impression, let alone on your very first day. Afterall, you did give up almost everything to be where you were at the moment. 

In the middle of a street, almost 3 blocks away from your apartment.

It had been a quiet night, you may have even found it suspicious to be this eerily quiet but you thought it might be due to you being in the supposedly ‘good’ parts of the city. 

But at that moment, you heard a faint groan-like sound. That made you pause for a second. It was clear because of the quietness around you, only the subtle sounds of honks and cars rushing further away.

Your heartbeat sped up a little, thinking about how you perhaps have finally stumbled into one of those alien monsters you kept hearing about before you moved. 

Just your luck.

You didn’t know what to do, you didn’t want to be one of those who speculated further and probably die like the way the stupid character in a horror movie does but you also didn’t want to make too much noise and just make a quick exit.

Or you could hide?

But before you thought of doing the third, you heard it again, this time louder. And it sounded very human-like. Like someone in pain. 

For fuck’s sake. Now even if you wanted to ignore it and run, you couldn’t. 

Walking really slowly, you moved towards the narrow street-way ahead. It was so hidden, you probably would not even care to check it out on a normal basis. 

Thankfully, the street lights were still on, so most of the road was visible, and you could see a small light coming from that path too, illuminating out onto the main road a little. It felt even more weird, just how deserted everything around you seemed. 

You paused in your footsteps, just before you could see into the way, making yourself visible to whoever…or whatever was in pain there. You just prayed it was not something that could probably kill you then and there. 

As you took a deep breath and took a step, you turned to face the alley. It’s like you froze again when you saw who was there. It was a person, leaning on the wall and as you scanned his face, you could tell he was definitely in pain. 

But the person was not ordinary you could say, if not whatever he was wearing didn’t tell you that. 

“...Hello?”

Clark’s eyes were sort of shut as he leaned against the wall, his attention was not on his surroundings or he would have heard you even before you could see him. 

He sat up a little straighter, or tried to before he gasped in pain again as he fell down again. 

“Shit. You’re hurt, oh my Gods.” You immediately rushed to the man, bending down to assess his situation. His face had something black smudged all over in little patches, hair messed up a little, and even though you couldn’t tell if there were any open wounds, or bleeding ones, you could tell he did have something messed up somewhere. 

“...you think?" You almost rolled your eyes at the way his tone seemed mocking even when he was in such a situation. Even though it wasn’t too well lit, you could still make out the familiar vibrant blue suit and the very very familiar giant red ‘S’ on his chest. But then again, these sorts of costumes were considerably cheap and found almost everywhere, so maybe this wasn’t the actual hero and just some…guy who got mistaken for the real deal and was now well, here. 

“Are you bleeding anywhere?” Your sudden touch on his face made him flinch a little and you felt a little bad but you needed to see if he had any serious wounds on his face that could potentially be deadly. 

“No,I-no. I just…it’s uh- I am fine.”

“No you aren’t dude, you’re literally bruised and beaten up.”

He blinked back at your sharp tone, and you suddenly stood up. 

“Can you walk?” 

“I- yeah, i think i can.” With that he tried getting up, but failed, as you thought. 

Sighing, you spoke in a firm tone, “Okay, listen here’s what we’ll do, you use as much strength as you can, and you lean on me and we’ll walk. The closest place where we can…get you fixed up right now, is near here, just like three blocks away.” 

Maybe you should have gone with the option of calling the helpline but your phone had died a while ago and you didn’t even think this was how your night was going to spin into because you assumed, only a few minutes and you’d be home anyways. 

Besides, the alleyway was beginning to feel a little ominous and you wanted to get out, quick. 

So you’d take the chances with the…cosplayer?? And hope he doesn’t kill you. 

Yeah, you were slowly starting to think maybe you were the stupid character in a horror movie.

Clark didn’t know what to say, it didn’t even occur to him that maybe you didn’t know who he was, as…self-absorbed as that sounded, it was more of a natural thing at that rate for everyone to just know who he was and recognise him immediately. 

“HEY! Don’t faint on me right now.” You bent back down and reached for his arm, 

“Put your arm around my shoulder,”

Perhaps you just underestimated how…large this man was. His arm almost engulfed your whole form, and now you were wondering if you could even possibly help him walk when your entire being might just get crushed under his huge form.

It was though he was automated to follow your orders, basically just allowing you to help him without a word said and he could only blink in wonder and amusement. He slowly stood up, mostly leaning his weight on the wall. And only when he was standing, you could just make out the difference between him and you. 

Even though you were fairly tall, this guy seemed like a whole different being, only then could you make out his muscles as they stretched beneath his ridiculously tight suit. 

Could he even breathe in that???

You grunted beneath the sudden weight of his, as he unintentionally leaned towards your side and Clark felt even worse, he was already feeling bad for having a stranger find him in this condition when he should be the one helping others and it got worse when he saw you struggle helping him. 

He moved behind a bit but before he could, you firmly held his arm that was over your shoulder, you had to tilt your head above to meet his eyes which you could see were some shade of blue, probably brighter under better light conditions.

“Walk slowly, don’t try to walk on your own when you clearly can’t, we’ll go slowly okay?”

It was hard to believe Superman out of all, was in this condition, but the fact that even after facing all sorts of evil and horrible people, there were still people who did things out of their own goodness for strangers. Maybe you could have easily walked away, but you didn’t.

Now moments after, a lot of grunting and pushing yourself way above your own limits, especially being reminded that maybe you should check out that gym flyer you got when you first moved which sat discarded on your desk, you finally could see your building. 

“Hey…we’re- almost there.” For the most part, he stayed silent, genuinely not knowing what to say but also feeling that if he said anything, it might not even make sense. But he did observe you, and even if he couldn’t possibly know everyone in the city, he could sorta say you weren’t from there. You were probably new. 

Again being grateful for the fact that your apartment was just on the ground floor, only a few steps further up and you’d reach your door, this was the time when you appreciated it more than ever because you were not sure if you could even walk on more than five stairs at the moment. 

“Keys-my keys.” You had one arm holding his own that was above your shoulder while the other was around his waist, barely making it to the other end of it.

And oh the stupid cape that almost kept getting in between your legs when you walked, you didn’t say it out loud but you cursed in your mind that out of all injured types of people, you just had to have some cosplayer. 

He looked down at you, trying to understand you. “You- you’ll need to grab them. They’re in my pocket, on the left.”

It didn’t help that this man wasn’t bad looking at all, and you tried your hardest to not let that affect your opinion of him just being a stranger who needed your help.

You were annoyed when your heart almost leaped into your throat as his other arm moved to your pocket which was near your waist. You wish you didn’t think about how large his hand seemed compared to your waist, almost as he could probably throw you across a room with one push. 

You would have jumped off a cliff then and there, if you knew how said man could hear your heartbeat especially how it suddenly sped up and could feel the warmth slowly engulfing your face. 

As he finally removed your keys, he inserted them into the key-hole only now making out a familiar logo.

“Seems like someone is a fan.”

“Wha-oh.”

You looked at the familiar black bat logo,your batman keychain that hung on the door. You scoffed at him, looking at him in disbelief, “Is this really the time for this?”

“Is there ever a ti-Ouch!”

You accidentally stepped on his foot, and even though it didn’t particularly hurt, he said it out of some instinct, “I’m not sorry for that.” Muttering under your breath, you pushed open the door and prayed you left your living room clean at least. 

Reaching for the switch beside the door, you turned it on and finally let out a breath of relief. “Move it quick now.” 

You used the last bits of energy and quickly moved forward till your couch, pushing him to sit down while laying off his arms from your body.

You threw yourself into the mini odd shaped sofa chair you had and shut your eyes, breathing in deeply. You opened your eyes and got up, went and closed your door while removing your key and placing it on the table where it was usually placed when you were in the house, before any nosy neighbour wondered why there was noise at such an odd hour. So far, you hadn’t had any unnecessary confrontations with them, nor did you want to change that. 

Clark felt oddly…safer now. He couldn't imagine getting up sooner, maybe even potentially just being in that alleyway overnight until finally his healing would progress significantly in the daytime. 

But despite being ready for that too, he realised he preferred being indoors, even though it wasn't his home, it was something. 

He opened his eyes again and found his gaze scanning the room. It looked lived in, unlike his which seemed more…neater but in the way like it was never touched. Used. 

The wall had pictures, polaroids of all sorts, people, places. While the scent of the room was sandalwood with hints of something sweeter. There were a few older items, like vintage, the record player, cassettes. A bookshelf sat neatly in a corner with one sofa chair beside it, the shelf with some familiar titles and authors.

He didn't even realise you now moved to sit in front of him on your glass table while his gaze drunk in your room. You didn't mind it but it somehow felt intruding. Like someone peeking into your soul. 

“Hey, costume guy…” 

That made him turn towards you.

He raised an eyebrow in question, “...costume guy??”

“Of course. You're wearing that guy’s costume…what was his name again? Super- super something-”

“Superman…?” 

“Ah yeah, yeah him.” 

Clark decided if you were purposely being oblivious then he’s just going to do the same and if you were actually oblivious, then he didn’t really want to say anything. So either way, he just went along with the act, that indeed he was just some guy wearing a costume. 

“So uh…will ice help? I mean I am not really sure what the extent of your injuries are...”

“It might.” His voice was much clearer but still gruffy.

With that you nodded and quickly got up, going to your freezer and hoping you’d find some ice or even a pack of frozen peas there. Not that you weren’t unfamiliar with how injuries worked, it’s just this was a first where you’d be treating someone else. Usually, if you got hurt, you’d either wash it off and slap a band-aid if it was an open cut or just use an ice pack for any bruises which bothered you for more than a day. Sometimes, you’d just let the injury be until your body somehow healed itself.

Ah there it is.

Examining the frozen pack of peas, you wondered for a second how you even had this. You weren’t really a fan of peas, so probably your mom must have tossed it in there when she came over and decided to always stock up your fridge with everything to last for weeks before she left. 

“So, do you have a name? Or is costume guy just the way you go around introducing yourself?”

You sat back down in front of him, noticing he now seemed much more relaxed and was practically sunk into the sofa. You wouldn’t blame him, it was probably one of the best things you owed. He blinked up at your voice and cleared his throat.

“Uh…Kent.”“Your name is…Kent?”

“Yes.”

Well you hoped you didn’t seem too suspicious with your questioning look. He didn’t look like a Kent, not that you’d know how a Kent would look like. 

“Alright…Kent, um so I have this, just tell me where to place it, then I can go get the first aid kid.” 

After he showed you the spot, to the left of his abdomen, you placed the pack there and gently took his hand, placing it on top of the peas as support.

“Hold this,”

After some time of rummaging around for your very unused first aid kit, you finally sat back down in front of him. He had not spoken since he said his name and you figured it was due to him not being in the right state at that time. 

His eyes were shut by the time you opened the kit. Clark decided it was best to…pretend to be asleep. He knew, if he were awake, there would be questions and he didn’t think he had the answers to those at that very moment. Even if there was a part of him, the one that felt very guilty for in a way, deceiving you. He didn’t want to cause any more trouble than he already felt he was causing. 

He had to control his whole being when he felt your fingers brush against his face, with anti-septic. Your touch was really light, as if scared to hurt him and the thought did make him want to smile a bit. He felt warm water cleaning off the dirt that was smudged on his face and he could feel your heartbeat quicken. He didn’t want to use his powers even by mistake; he didn't want to cause any sort of suspicion. 

And this somehow made him feel he could be normal. The one thing that was very unfamiliar to him. Yet somehow, he felt this odd emotion, in your apartment, a mere stranger who has a good heart. 

[ after a few minutes ] 

You were done with cleaning him up the most you could and even though the dirt didn’t hide it, Kent was one very attractive man. His hair, although now ruffled, sat perfectly on his face, some strands loose on top of his forehead, his lips, a pretty pink colour and his perfectly grabbable face. Gosh you could just imagine how he looked when he smiled with those ocean blue eyes twinkling. 

 And these thoughts were what made you question yourself. 

Here was a bruised up guy laying,pretty sure passed out, on your couch and you were checking him out?

Standing up, you shook your head and got up. Putting everything aside, you realised you were also tired. 

“Kent…?” He didn’t respond to you and that did make your heart quicken a little but you saw his chest rise slowly. You sighed in relief. 

He passed out. 

Now you weren’t sure whether to follow your trained rules of never letting a stranger stay over or your instinct of letting him rest until he eventually woke up. 

If he did want to hurt me, he could have done it ages ago. And very easily.

In the end, your body made the decision for you. You went into your spare closet and took a blanket, placed it carefully on top of him and also filling a glass of water with some pain killers and putting them on the table. 

Scribbling down on a sticky note, you wrote, 

“Take these, they’ll help with the body ache. :)” 

And you placed it on the table, in a way he will probably be able to read. You decided to go and at least have a change of clothes before you contemplated whether to stay up all night and sit outside, or lock yourself in your room and sleep. Or, take him to a hospital as your phone was charging now. 

Looking at the time ,you didn’t even realise it’d been almost two hours since you did all this, and no wonder your body was beginning to feel tired. You’d managed to fix your biological clock a few years ago and now after a certain time, your body automatically winded itself for sleep mode. 

Changing as fast, in case he woke up, you also cleaned yourself up a little, from the smudges of dirt and whatever else. 

But by the time you got out, you found your living room empty. 

“Kent?”

Your eyes darted around the place, in case he did turn out to be some sort of intruder and now you were going to die because you trusted a fucking stranger and let him into your home. But no, a few seconds passed and nothing.

You looked at the table and found the glass of water empty, sticky notes also gone and the medicine too. Looking at the door, you found it was slightly ajar. You walked up to it, still in a daze wondering how the hell did a guy who could barely walk, suddenly vanished.

And somehow, you could come to a few conclusions, some seeming true to an extent that maybe he was faking it and it was all a ploy and now you’d have to either move across the world, change names and disappear if you wanted to live. Or. 

Or he was not…a cosplayer. And he was the actual superhero dude. 

The latter somehow seemed embarrassing because it meant you also made yourself seem oblivious when you told him about his ‘costume’. 

You did a quick check of the hallway before you locked your front door and also quickly checked from the windows too, for any sign of him on the street somewhere but nothing. So you sat down on your still-warm couch, the night quiet. 

Murmuring to yourself, you held the empty glass, “Well a thank you would have been nice.”

You called it a night after the whole thing, it was so sudden and quick, you stayed up more than you should have, mulling over the events and you weren’t too pleased that when your eyes did shut, all you could think about were deep dark blue twinkling eyes and a pretty smile. 

[ The next morning ]

After the whole fiasco of the night, you weren’t too eager the next morning when you had to wake up with only a few hours of sleep and go to your new job. You did your best to clean yourself up as much as you potentially could, in a way the attention would not directly dart to the dark circles under your eyes. You chose the best outfit you had and sprayed on the perfume you loved the most. 

And after drinking down a cup of morning tea, locking your house up and commuting with no trouble, you were suddenly in a much better mood. The events slowly made their way to the back of your mind. 

Now standing in front of the building, you stared at the bold letters, “The Daily Planet”. It felt like one of those moments of life where you thought you'd finally made it. And this time, you did. 

Taking a deep breath you entered the building, but before you could, someone larger seemed to also take the same decision at the same time as you and you almost collided. 

Annoyed, you looked up at the person and paused. 

Clark could not believe it. Here he was, knowing there was no chance or odd to ever stumble into you again because you lived completely on the other side of the city and he would make sure to not really go there, in case if he did somehow stumble into you again, you probably would have figured out his truth. 

But no. The chance of stumbling into you again was there and it was real and it 100% happened as he looked at your face where your eyes squinted up at him. 

“Uh sorry, you should go first.” He rushed to step behind before you could look at him again to which you didn’t exactly follow his orders and only looked at him. 

“Well, I mean I don’t really know where to go..anyways…it’s um- my first day here. So uh you should go first.”

The guy only gulped as he pushed his glasses up with his index finger which kept slipping off the slope of his nose. And it felt like you knew something about him but it was odd because you didn’t know him, possibly could not and all you could think about was how familiar he seemed. 

So you decided to be forward, because it seemed like he wasn’t one who initiated conversation from in front. A harsh judgement perhaps but it was just something…from your gut. And you trusted it fully. 

Pushing one hand forward, you looked up at him again, titling your eyes which sparked with curiosity. 

“Hey, I’m Y/N, a new recently joined intern here, it’s my first day and you are?”

All he did was blink behind his specs at you as he froze awkwardly and you wondered if that was too forward. But before you could doubt your choices, he shifted his bag on his shoulder and clasped your hand with his huge one and you noticed immediately how it engulfed yours completely. 

“I’m- I’m Clark.” He bit his tongue before he could say his second name, remembering that’s what he had previously told you the other night. 

And before you thought about it, you quickly asked, 

“I- this is going to sound so odd, because well this is my first time in this city and i barely know anyone but…have we met somewhere before?”

• Point out his protective behavior and he'll blush, roll his eyes, and deny it. A big tsundere.

• When sleeping for the night, Leone doesn't really initiate a cuddle. He still finds the idea of physical affection kind of strange but I don't think he'd mind if you lean on him a little. In times where he can't sleep or is having a hard time sleeping, he'd stare at you in the dark, admiring your features. He ends up snuggling close or (very rarely) holding you— ONLY when you're asleep!! When you wake up and find yourself caged in his arms, you'd rub it in his face all day and he'd act all grumpy and pout.

• Likes to have an arm around you, be it over your shoulder or waist! Quite clingy.

• He's a flirt! Tries out a cliché one liner on you and plays it off casually, acting like he's not embarrassed after you laughed at it. It was a cute attempt.

• Makes you watch movies with his favorite actor in it. Will explode in excitement if you end up liking it, too! Bonus points if you got him tickets to go see them in person, he'll get on his knees and hug your legs, calling you an angel and saying you're way too good for him!

• Just like Leone, he'll be quite protective over you if someone dangerous is close by! Won't hesitate to beat their ass if they tried anything on you.

• His stands, Sex Pistols, love you!

• He gives comforting hugs and would crack jokes to make you feel better! He would also do things for you if you're feeling down. Puts on movies, wrap you up in blankets, and would eat snacks with you.

• On bed, he loves holding you against him or having you on top of him! You can't escape this man's grip once he's asleep. He oftentimes also falls asleep on top of you and you can't shove off his weight until he's awake.

• Loud snorer. May even drool sometimes.

• Super clingy and loud! Loves to boast to people about how cool his partner is

• Locks your arms together, holds your hand, has an arm over your shoulder, too!

• He'd drag you around to different places, excited to spend time with you!

• Whines and complains whenever you can't go do whatever he wanted to do with you, starts pouting and saying: "Oh, I guess you don't love me anymoreeee.."

• Give him a hug or a kiss to the cheek and he'll be all giddy again!

• Would encourage you to go play pranks on Abbacchio or anyone else in the gang! (Mostly Abbacchio because he finds it funny for whatever reason)

• You both would laugh so loudly, rolling around and clutching your stomachs

• Narancia runs away laughing whenever Abbacchio starts to get angry

• Steals some of your food and snacks playfully but he obviously shares

• Calm and easy going kind of partner

• Like Bruno, he prioritizes your comfort and well-being over anything else

• If you're not comfortable with PDA, he'll respect it. If you're fine with it, he likes to hold your hand.

• Really sweet and kind. Whenever you're feeling down, he'd gift you things you like/spoil you. You need something done? Don't think about it, it's already dealt with. Having cravings? He'll bring you your favorite foods.

• Also great with words. His soft voice instantly comforts you

• Likes to bring you to quiet walks in the park or in the beach. It's calming for the both of you.

• Given his studious nature, I feel like he's read all about a relationship before and what to do when in one

• A little hesitant and shy when showing affection. Probably not that into PDA.

• We know he has anger issues but with you, he tries his best to be patient and understanding

• If someone wrongs you, his protectiveness and anger issues will rise. He makes sure to keep you aside, not wanting you to get hurt in the aftermath (considering his stand is super dangerous and unstable) or to see him act so violently.

• If you're as smart and studious as him, too, he'd enjoy spending time together with you just reading and discussing certain topics. Would love to learn new things with you as well!

• If he gave up on teaching Narancia, he'd make you do it lol

• He may be a little shy than his normally calm and collected state. He can't help it! You just make him feel all warm and weak!

• In my own opinion, I see Trish as more of the receiver than the giver

• PDA is a 50/50. She may at times dislike it but is sometimes fine with it.

• Probably doesn't like it when you get too clingy in public but definitely doesn't mind it when in private.

• I could totally see her spending time with you by going out shopping together, getting your hairs done, and more.

• She loves it when you do things for her and spoil her

• She enjoys spending time together just painting each other's nails, doing each other's makeup, styling each other's hair, etc..

• You both would definitely spill tea and gossip about whatever or whoever has been bothering yall

• Every now and then, she'd gift you a few things and say stuff like: "I thought this would look good on you. I bought us a matching pair."

Summary: You've known each other for so long, ever since you were kids. But after he's become so unrecognizable, you have to wonder if being chained to him is worth it anymore.

A/n: I got nothing to say besties I love causing Johnny pain!!!!

“Nicholas, Johnny, remember that I have a guest coming over today. Can I ask that both of you remain on your best behavior?” George said sternly, a subtle warning that if the two acted up, there would be consequences to pay for it. The two boys agreed, back straight as they awaited the ‘guest’.

George exhaled and uncrossed his arms. “You two will not need to be in the study when they come by. My friend has a young child, around your age, Johnny. I expect that you two will treat them properly.” 

George didn’t wait for a response, walking away to prepare himself. Nicholas and Johnny glanced at each other, wide, eager smiles on their face as they thought about who they’d see. 

When the ‘guests’ finally arrived, Johnny momentarily forgot his manners, ignoring the man and instead glancing for the child George talked about. When his blue eyes landed on yours, something within him stirred, as if he was magnetized to you. 

He ran to you, grabbing your hands in his, and gave a toothy grin. “I’m Johnny! What’s your name?” 

Johnny could never explain why he was so drawn to you. You, likewise, never stood a chance against a fate when it came to Johnny. You two were practically attached at the hip, almost never seen without the other. 

Johnny (but mostly Nicholas) was the one who taught you how to secretly ride a horse whenever you visited the estate. You taught Johnny different plants he should avoid and what was edible after he had a mishap with poison ivy. Johnny liked getting lost in the forest with you. You liked staying up at night and pointing out different constellations with him from your book. 

“That’s a shooting star!” Johnny yelled, shooting upright and pressing his finger against the glass window. 

“What? Really?” You squinted. 

“Yeah, but you missed it, slowpoke,” he rolled his eyes as he flicked your forehead. 

“I’m not slow…” 

“And yet you’re always last when it comes to racing,” Johnny smugly pronounced. “What are we at? 1000 - 0?” 

“Ugh, you’re a jerk,” you huffed. “Now, you saw a shooting star. You gotta make a wish.” 

“Oh, right,” he said as he turned around to the face the night sky. He closed his eyes, exhaled, and clasped his hands together. “Okay, did it. I wished we’d be friends forever.” 

“Johnny!” You shouted. “You can’t tell me that, now it won’t come true!” 

“Don’t tell me you believe that old thing,” he snorted. “Come on, you know it’s not true.” 

“But what if it is? Now we might not be friends.” 

Johnny glanced back at you and sighed before he took his seat back on his bed next to you. “Nah. I know we will be friends forever. Even my dad thinks you’re part of the family now.”

“But how do we really know?” You asked anxiously. Johnny tapped his chin and shrugged. 

“Guess we don’t. But I’m not gonna believe a dumb superstition. We’re a team, right?” He insisted, putting his pinkie out to you. You felt yourself ease up at his confidence and wrapped your pinkie around his. 

“Yeah, a team.” He smiled proudly at your words. 

He had no reason in his mind to think of anything else. The four years you two had known each other had to have solidified your bond for life. His luck may have been strange, but you were a constant in his life. That wasn’t changing anytime soon.

You both should have known it was the beginning of end. At the age of 9, you and Johnny stood by Nicholas’s coffin. Johnny had clung to you, sobbing that it was all his fault, that he was the reason Nicholas died. If only he had just drowned Danny like George asked, if only he just listened, then Nicholas would still be there. 

He was fundamentally changed by Nicholas’s death. Why wouldn’t he be? That was his dear brother. You had grown to see Nicholas as an older brother as well, the type of good-natured sibling who made sure you and Johnny were happy. But Johnny was not Nicholas. 

You knew that. Johnny knew that. Most of all, George knew that. 

But Johnny kept continuing to go back on his horse, insisting he was fine, demanding you stop asking how he was. He was good. He would race. He would make George proud. He would honor Nicholas through his racing.

Johnny devoted so much time to racing, as if his life depended on it. Perhaps it did, in his mind, but you were still there, watching. You would read quietly by the small bench as Johnny lectured his horse for not jumping as high over the hurdle today. You would do your schoolwork while Johnny timed himself again and again, practicing lap after lap. Sometimes, Diego Brando would come to you and start a conversation with you. 

Johnny wouldn’t pay attention, too busy fixing the reins of his horse to care. And you, who really didn’t have much else besides him, hated seeing your best friend so hurt. So you would wait, as usual. 

“Do you think I’ll be able to make my dad proud?” Johnny mulls one evening as you both drink on the hill you two frequented as kids.

“I think you will,” you begin. “I think he’s proud of you now.” 

“That’s a damn lie and you know it.” 

You pursed your lips and took another sip. “I’m sorry.” 

“Yeah. So am I.” 

It only seemed to get worse from there. Johnny would make time for you infrequently, still trying to keep up the idea of you being his ‘best friend’ to those around him. You didn’t know which you’d rather deal with at this point; his total silence towards you while hordes of girls and celebrities flocked to him, or his half-hearted attempt at clinging to the friendship you two had. Both killed you inside, and despite knowing deep down that you should cut your losses, you still stuck around. 

You stuck around when he asked for you to cover for him while he was out drinking with some friends. You stuck around when he made you do the group project by yourself because some rich governor wanted to meet him later. You stuck around when he didn’t say a word as a ‘friend’ of his made fun of you for being so clingy towards Johnny like a lost puppy. 

You knew you shouldn’t have stuck around for that. You knew you deserved better. 

But that stupid, stupid part of you that yearned for Johnny to just treat you like he did before always won out over logic. That ridiculous voice inside you said that being hurt by Johnny was better than no Johnny at all. Because Johnny was your best friend, your first friend. 

Johnny was a lot of your firsts, in fact. He was not only your first friend, but the one who first taught you to ride a horse, the one you first slept over with, the one you did your first trip with, and your first kiss when you two tried to copy what you saw a couple do as kids. Scarily enough, he was not only those things, but he was also your first love. You stupidly fell in love with your childhood best friend. Like a damn cliche, you fell for him, never recognizing that the warmth you felt for him went just beyond friends. 

But it was too late to even confess this, as he had already was on his third girlfriend of the month, never sparing you a glance beyond a ‘thanks’ for doing his work. You would be foolish enough to try, but naive you that wished for everything under the sun for just a chance with Johnny still stayed. Maybe one day he’d wake up and recognize the people that encircled him after his race didn’t care. Maybe one day he’d notice that you were still there, cheering him on for his races, even as he came in second almost every time. Maybe, maybe, maybe, that foolish wish he made under the star would come true and you’d stay friends forever. 

Like always, you sat on the bench by the training grounds of the estate, reading for the upcoming test you would have soon, that Johnny would likely want you to summarize for him and his buddies. You heard footsteps approaching, but didn’t stop reading. 

“Johnny, what do you-” 

“Me? Johnny? Please. I thought you’d know better than that by now to compare me to him,” a smug voice reproached you. You looked up in confusion before noticing the cocky stature of none other than Diego Brando. 

“Oh… Diego. Do you want me to leave?” You asked, beginning to pack up your things. Diego only ever made casual conversation with you after all these years, so you had no clue why he was walking up to you so suddenly. 

“Hm, no. I just couldn’t help but notice that Joestar boy left you alone again.” 

You rolled your eyes as Diego taunted you. “If that’s all you came here to tell me, you can leave. I don’t need to hear that from you.” 

“So sensitive. You’re beginning to resemble a cornered dog.” 

“Diego, enough. Seriously. Just leave me alone if you have nothing nice to say,” you glared. 

“If that’s what you wish. I was going to offer you a chance to go for a ride with me, but if I am so horrible that you don’t even wish to talk to me, then I’ll be on my merry way. Goodbye, maybe that Joestar will throw you a bone one day,” Diego sneered as he turned around and waved his hand. 

“Huh? Wait!” You shot up and followed after him. “Why are you offering that to me?” 

“Must I explain it to you?” “I would like you to.” 

“Hah. No,” he deadpanned. “And look at you, already following after me. It seems you can’t help but listen to those more powerful than you.” 

“I’m not doing it because-” 

“I don’t really care,” Diego replied, throwing on the saddle for his horse and fitting it properly. “Would you like to come, or not?” 

Johnny despised Diego more than anything. He’d be furious if he knew you were even talking to him. Diego sensed your hesitation, sighing dramatically and extending his hand to you. “If you want to go waiting around like a lost sheep for that boy, by all means, go ahead. I’m offering you a horseback ride, not a marriage proposal.” 

Within an instant, you threw your reservations away and gripped his hand, letting him help you onto the saddle. He was right. Johnny was busy elsewhere and this was just a simple ride around the estate. Why should you care what Johnny thought now? 

Diego snorted in amusement as your brows furrowed, but didn’t make another comment, instead, snapping the reins of the horse against it, causing the horse to begin galloping. 

For the first time in a while, you had an enjoyable evening. You simply basked in the wind as Diego expertly maneuvered the horse around. It didn’t take much before you two began talking to each other, pleasantly surprised by how Diego was talking to you when Johnny was not around. It was like seeing a whole new side to the genius jockey that he rarely ever showed before. 

Soon, though, he took the horse back to the stable and promptly helped you off. You were about to collect your bearings and go when he spoke once more to you as he was rummaging through a box of supplies for tending to his horse. 

“You should really stand up for yourself for once.” 

“Huh?” 

“You heard me. Are you really going to let that boy trample you all over every day? Come on. It’s pathetic to witness. Even I felt bad seeing you like that,” he replied in an even tone. While his words were harsh, it lacked his usual mocking tone. 

“I don’t need your pity, Diego,” you stiffened, knowing he had a point. 

“I know you don’t need it. What you really need is a spine. Too bad all the money in the world can’t afford you that,” he commented. “Oh well. It’s not my place. But if you get tired of being that boy’s little mule, you can come to me. I’d be happy to have you as a cheerleader for me.” 

He looked you in the eyes this time. Instead of a haughty, egotistical smirk, it was a frank smile. You were taken aback by his casual friendliness and nodded. 

“Thank you. And thank you again for the ride. I needed it.” 

“Hmph. Don’t go around telling others that, though. Lord knows I don’t need more tabloids on my ass over this.” 

“I won’t. It’ll be our secret,” you said as you began to walk back to your original spot at the bench with a more relaxed stance. For once, there wasn’t a heavy pit in your stomach that threatened to consume you, but a gentle warmth that slowly blossomed there. 

That warmth didn’t last long when a few days after, Johnny and Diego were set to compete in another race. Of course you were going, that was always a given, and like always, Johnny gave you a ticket to let you in. Even if he was never around much, he left you the tickets in your bag, almost as if it was just expected of you. Perhaps it was, at this rate. You’ve been doing this for almost five years now. 

You sat in the bleachers next to a few other familiar faces- mostly the elite who came to socialize or discuss some business and gamble, or younger people who came to try and entice the racers into giving them more attention. You were to offer moral support and comfort Johnny when he’d get frustrated for being silver. 

It was a while before Johnny was set to race, but when he did, the crowd whispered in hushed tones if he would finally surpass Diego today. Some had bet on him, while others kept to their trusty pick of Diego. The gunshot went off, and the horses sprinted. It was close. So, so close. Johnny was more determined than ever to win this race, and it showed in the near sliver of space between him and Diego. 

Come on, Johnny, come on!

You held your breath, but as it was for so long, close was not close enough. Diego had won, but only by a measly half a second. Your heart dropped as Johnny grimaced and hurried his horse back to the stable. Silver was not good enough. Silver would never make George look at him. Not while Diego was winning race after race, surrounded in heaps of gold. 

You stood up to go meet with Johnny, hurriedly wanting to comfort him and offer more words of encouragement that would probably amount to nothing. Because nothing was enough, not until he won. Just as you were in the stables and looking for Johnny, someone clearing their throat beside you caught your attention. You turned around and saw Diego, that smug look on his face again as he held a gold trophy. 

“Not even a congratulations?” He joked. 

“Oh, sorry. Congrats, Diego. You did wonderful out there, today,” you complimented him. Even if Johnny was your friend, Diego was clearly a special prodigy at horseriding. It was no wonder he was called the ‘genius jockey’ all throughout America and Europe. You were about to continue when he grabbed your wrist. 

“That eager to see Joestar? I’m sure he can wait. I wanted to ask you something,” Diego began. 

“Hm? Go ahead.” 

“They’re organizing a party for my win soon. Tomorrow night, actually. I’m allowed one guest. Perhaps you’re interested in ditching Joestar for the evening and coming with me?” You gasped and felt your face heat up. 

“Diego, I-” 

“Are you kidding me?!” A voice yelled. You jumped at the tone but knew instantly who it was. Diego snorted and placed a hand on his hips. 

“Well now. Can’t you see we’re in the middle of something, Joestar?” Diego snapped. 

“Back the hell off, Brando, I don’t wanna deal with your shit right now,” Johnny venomously spouted. He stomped over and stood between you and Diego. “Is that what you’ve been doing? Huh?” 

“What? Johnny, what are you talking about?” You replied, confused at why he was suddenly aiming his vitriol at you. 

“You know damn well what I’m talking about! I invited you here, and now you’re planning trysts with this asshole?” 

“I didn’t even-” 

“What kind of friend are you?! You know how much I hate him! Why are you going to see him behind my back?” 

Your blood began boiling at all these accusations. You clenched your fists and jaw, trying to control yourself. “I didn’t do anything behind your back. Diego just asked me a question.” 

“Please, Diego never justs ‘asks’ questions. And don’t lie to me. I saw what you two did the other day!” 

“So what? It was just a little ride! It’s not like we did anything!” 

“So you admit you’ve been seeing him!” Johnny pointed a finger at you. Diego made his presence known again and stepped closer. 

“What, jealous, Joestar? That your ‘best friend’ finally opened their eyes and prefers me over your lousy company?” 

“Yeah, right. I don’t give a crap about you, Brando!” Diego didn’t respond, instead spitting at the floor near Johnny’s decaying shoes. 

“You talk big for second place. A second-rate jockey like you should know better than to try and insult me after that piss-poor performance you gave today.” 

“You damn-” Johnny nearly launched at Diego before you held him back. “What the hell? Let go of me!” 

“Johnny, seriously? You can’t go attacking people!” You lectured. 

“Why the hell are you defending him? Huh? You like him that much?” 

“It’s not about liking, Johnny, it’s just-” 

“Just what? Think you can suddenly do better than me? You ain’t that special!” Johnny screamed at the top of his lungs. Time froze as you saw Johnny’s eyes widen in horror at what he just told. Even Diego was taken aback for a moment before you let go of Johnny and swiftly smacked him across the face. 

“Screw you! You’re horrible!” You trembled, the years of anger and humiliation now getting to you. Johnny held his cheek with his hand as you unleashed everything you felt inside. “How can you tell me I’m a bad friend when you never acted like a friend in years?! How can you get mad at me when I wait around for you, when I embarrass myself daily thinking one day you’ll treat me like an actual person and not a damn dog?!” 

“I didn’t mean to-” 

“I don’t wanna hear it from you, Johnny! I should’ve done this earlier! I should’ve stopped hanging around and wishing for you to grow up! Because you never will! You’re an even bigger asshole than anyone else I’ve ever met! All you do is think you’re hot shit, when really, you’re just an insecure little brat!” 

Johnny’s face furrowed as his ego felt more bruised than before. “Really? If you think I’m such an asshole, then why don’t you just go?” 

“I will! I don’t wanna see you ever again!” 

“Oh yeah? See if you’ll get anywhere without me being the one to prop your name up! See if you’ll be anyone if I didn’t give you some attention!” 

“I hate you, Johnny! I wish we never even met!” Your voice echoed in the stables. Johnny’s hands shook in anger as he gripped the second place trophy tight. You were breathing raggedly, but all Johnny could see was Diego smirking at him, as if taunting him. Rubbing it in his face that he caused this, that your frustration was all his doing. 

In a fit of rage and guilt, Johnny flung the trophy at Diego, only barely missing the English jockey. He didn’t bother to stay in the stables any longer, instead walking away from you for good. 

“Yeah, well, have fun with him then. Go suck up to him as much as you can, because when I win, I’m not gonna let you come back,” Johnny bitterly stated, ripping off the gold pin you got him so many years ago as a good luck charm and tossing it to the dirt. 

“I’d never want you back anyways,” you spat, solidifying ten years of friendship coming to an end, never to be seen as anything more than a bad memory.
