one sup of this will have you demanding the news
hlep help were being ganged up on in the polycule groupchat
why is it that every time you see the most rancid doomer take you've ever seen you go to op's blog abc their pinned is like "IM SCARY!! do you hate me? well CRY ABOUT IT!! i used to be NICE, but NOT ANYMORE! you fucked it up! im MEAN NOW! i have to protect MY PEACE! are you scared yet? yeah, well, you should've been nicer to me. also, this fictional character is MINE! if you think they like you too, well, (chuckles darkly) i feel sad for you. GO CRY ABOUT IT!!!!"
I'm not even joking
I saw this video about a doctor who performed an MRI on a 5 year old and discovered she essentially had ābrain damageā from excessive iPad use, as the white matter in her brain couldnāt form properly due to an understimulated environment.
Hmm itās almost like thereās supposed to be adult figures responsible for monitoring her screen time and making sure she develops properly⦠certainly this isnāt the result of neglect at the hands of her parentsā¦
āThis 5 year old is brain damaged by excessive iPad useā
Translation: This 5 year old is developmentally impaired by neglectful parents who used an iPad as a stand-in for social and environmental stimulation / interaction for hours at a time during critical early stages of child development. The iPad is the cop-out.
āChildren donāt have the strength to hold pencils anymore because they only use screens.ā
Translation: Parents arenāt making the conscious effort to help their children develop necessary skills and letting iPads raise them.
When are people going to realize the iPads and whatnot are the instruments through which the neglect is happening through and not the cause? How the fuck do you let your child have such a severe lack of physical strength in their hands that they canāt hold a pencil properly?
People will see a study suggesting children with higher screen times have poorer or negative developmental outcomes and immediately say itās the screens causing this, and not the more likely fact that higher screen time = less engagement time with their environment, physical exercise, parents, family, and their peers, all of which are NECESSARY for a healthy upbringing as a social species.
Itās like saying a dog who was kept in a cage all its life and left with atrophied muscles was damaged by the cage, and not by the fact its owners were too lazy to play or walk their dog in order for its muscles to build properly. The cage is the instrument of neglect and the owners are the perpetrators, in the same way parents are the perpetrators and weaponizing screen time as an excuse and painting themselves as helpless bystanders.
Okay, people keep misunderstanding my point and somehow interpreted this as me saying iPads and screens cause brain damage, even though I am literally arguing the opposite.
I put "brain damage" in quotations for a reason, I believe it's fear mongering nonsense and am well aware screens don't cause tissue damage. I am repeating the words the video I mentioned used, which is that the young girl sustained brain damage from an iPad, those are NOT my words and I made this post in the first place because it's a load of nonsense that's commonly repeated. I don't know how to make that more clear. What people are mistaking for tissue damage is just the outcome of child neglect, like I stated multiple times already. I repeat, I do not believe and am literally arguing against the notion that screens rot children's brains, I am well aware it's repackaged "TV rots your brain" rhetoric. I am, however, stating the obvious fact that parents neglecting their kids does cause impairments (note how I didn't say brain damage) and sometimes they use screens to perpetrate that neglect.
Yes there are parents in very shitty strained circumstances because of capitalism. However, I am very very sick of people expecting me to comfort and prioritize parents in discussions about abused and neglected children. I already reblogged another version of this before acknowledging parents in these difficult situations.
This is not solely about screen time, this is about the lack of proper care for children and how iPads are often the blame for bad parenting, and how the usual outcomes of abuse / neglect are being misunderstood as something else. A lot of these parents would likely still be neglectful of their children whether they had more or less screen time, whether they have iPads or not, because I am specifically referring to parents who do have the means but don't put the effort in because they don't care.
Directing people to this again because people are mostly reblogging the very first addition and itās leaving a lot of extra context out and additional clarification.

Holy Fuck
passing in public makes me feel like white shrek
literally how it feels
You can make a movie with where the only white character is a man named Ray Cism whose one line of his 16 seconds of screen time is āI seriously hate women and minorities.ā and youāll find fifty bajillion reader x Ray Cism fanfics and renaissance style drawings of him with a halo of golden light
gender amirite
Just a personal piece for me : )Ā
i did this piece in 2023 when i was coming to terms with being a transgender man. I knew that I would struggle deeply if I accepted this part of myself and I was terrified of that struggle. Yet, I also knew that I would be much happier for it. So I chose the struggle, and it hasnāt been easy but it really has made my life so much better. I am 2 years on T this month, and 3 months post op. I never believed I would be able to make this far, to ever feel this good about my body, to ever live authentically, but here I am!
Sometimes you just gotta jump in.
looking for animal references on image searches has always kind of sucked but it's much worse after AI image generation technology has begun to actually past muster, which is why i always just go straight to inaturalist. can't recommend this highly enough. you get to both find out about niche species you've never even heard of and also see some really good photographs like this one
x
I KNEW I had seen this exact same image before! Good old "Organisms On or Near Appropriate Signs" project.
oh that's a fun project. haven't seen this before. some good ones in here.
Also, I seem to recall inaturalist got on the AI bandwagon, so the signs people might be a safer bet.
[Edit:] oh no, it's the same ppl.
[Edit 2:]
Meet the 20 organizations using generative AI to address tough societal issues.
AI-edited photos are inventing rare bird sightings on iNaturalist, and scientists warn the AI slop could corrupt biodiversity records.
the first source you have linked is about this grant for making enhancements to the kind of machine learning aided identification and labeling/search tools their platform has been developing for almost a decade, and does not involve any AI imagery being generated or shown to users
FAQs What is the history of iNaturalist and AI? iNaturalist has been synthesizing photos and identifications using machine learning since 2017 to provide computer vision suggestions (a kind of AI) on the iNaturalist website and mobile apps. In 2023 we started incorporating observation location into our model training process, which resulted in the geomodel and range maps. All of the training of these models happens on two machines we own and control. Each time we update the model, we write a blog post about the new species that have been added thanks to the observations and identifications from the iNaturalist community. You can read the most recent blog post from April.
the second link is about AI generated or AI enhanced wildlife images being uploaded to citizen scientists database, and the inaturalist director of community support authoring a paper on why this is bad, along with a brief mention of the fact that inaturalist is trying to combat this with flagging that tries to prevent these images from being used in research
āRegular people are posting information that a scientist could probably never get at scale,ā said Tony Iwane of iNaturalist, a co-author on the paper. He called the network āalmost like a sensor of what is happening on Earth in real time.ā His catch: the information needs to be accurate. Feed it bad data and the inferences go wrong. A single AI-invented sighting can suggest a species has shifted its range when it has not. There is a second cost, too. Manipulated images used to train AI identification tools can quietly degrade them.
Fighting back The platforms are starting to respond. iNaturalist now lets users flag images two ways. A fully-AI-generated flag hides the image. An over-manipulated flag drops it to ācasualā grade, so it never reaches research databases.
like what possible point could you be trying to make here. what is the purpose of these links.
