I love all the 'rocky cares for grace' h/c but I crave more of the opposite too-
THE AMAZING DIGITAL CIRCUS - OVA 9 (FINAL) - 1999
Eridians have a full name that they introduce themselves with and use formally, and it’s very long because it includes details like their occupation, role in society, and their lineage. And, once Grace is on Erid, it’s decided by Rocky and the Eridian officials that Grace needs a full Eridian name, because it’s odd to just call him Grace in certain situations. It is easy to figure out part of his new full name, adding in teacher and savior of the stars, but the lineage bit is a little tricky. Grace was never particularly close to his parents so that doesn’t feel right, and he doesn’t feel like attempting to translate their names into Eridian. In the end, for that section, he just adopts parts of Rocky’s and Adrian’s names because that’s really his new family.
On his first excursion out of his biodome and through Erid (because of course they made him his own xenonite suit) with Rocky and Adrian, they get approached by many other Eridians who have heard of Grace. They coo some and praise the human, and add a congratulations to Rocky and Adrian at the end. It takes this happening a few times before Grace picks out the Eridian word for baby or child in the congratulations, and he’s ECSTATIC, making the assumption that his friends must be having a baby. Of course, he has some questions like “Why didn’t you tell me sooner?” and “Why does everyone know but me?” and “When will they be here?” and “Actually, how do Eridians reproduce?”. During his barrage of questions, Rocky and Adrian are speaking to each other in low tones, trying to figure out the best way to tell Grace that the name he uses for introductions and official matters translates to Grace, Child of Rocky and Adrian, Teacher and Savior of the Stars.
The other Eridians figure that thirty Earth years and then some is awfully young to tragically no longer have parents, and it’s very kind of Rocky and Adrian to take in a child of an alien species and raise it as their own. Especially since Earthlings don’t seem to take good care of their young, sending them into space.
Family is family
I honestly like how many agree that even though Grace can't get tattoos carved into his body or certain jems/stones imbedded into his body, Rocky and Adrian find other ways to go about it.
They give Grace jewelry with pieces of symbolic significance like as a way to decorate his glasses, or as earrings, or as a necklace or bracelets. Grace is different, but he is also seen as an Eridian all the same, and they want him to be part of them too in his own way even if it can't be traditional.
Like I imagine Rocky gives him bracelets and just goes "Grace say Grace no have family, Grace Rocky now family, Grace wear family crest on arms"
And Grace is like- "Oh-! You.. I.. Oh Rock you really don't have to I- I mean that's tied to you and your family specifically, your history and bloodline and-"
"Grace say Grace Rocky not family? Not part of history? Family?" Rocky says, seeming disappointed
"No! No no no we are family-! We are, lemme just- uh-" haphazardly puts on the bracelets "See? Family! Do I just- do I put them together when saying my name too or is it well- more of a symbolic thing?" Grace says
Rocky would be giggling "Good good, happy happy happy. Now Grace obligated to go to awkward family gatherings with Rocky." Rocky says before walking off
"Great I- wait what? Rocky what? Rocky-!" Grace follows after him
Guess what, it's time for more PHM headcanons cause I'm bored and I have fun coming up with these:
Once biodome compatible suits for the pebbles are made (and rigorously tested to ensure safety), Grace's class tries to teach him some common Eridian sports and instantly discovers that he is hilariously bad at them due to his lacking number of limbs
Rocky and Adrian are absolutely horrified when they find out that cooking and food related shows were a thing, but secretly end up getting super drawn into the competitive aspect
Grace and Rocky definitely go through their favourite sci-fi media with each other and like to point out how horribly inaccurate all the science and engineering is
Grace definitely shows his class Bill Nye videos
In an attempt to learn more about each other's culture, Grace and Rocky make an effort to participate in each other's holiday traditions. Rocky and Adrian are instantly disgusted when they find out that the main practice involved in Thanksgiving is eating, but as a compromise they make a request for the biodome team to make his meburger meat in the shape of a turkey
Grace's class becomes fascinated with the concept of human fashion and textiles and how certain wavelengths can make things look pretty?!
Rocky likes to make jokes that Eridians just have stage 4 colour blindness
Each new Eridian that discovers Grace is a serial hugger 100% goes through 5 stages of shock and horror before realising okay maybe he's not trying to kill me, I guess this is kind of nice
one of the many things that the PHM movie gets right as an adaptation that a lot of movies don’t is that it understands that movies and books are different mediums that tell stories in different ways. There are things in movies that just can’t work in books, and vice versa.
The PHM book and movie are both good for different reasons. Theyre the same story, but the movie truly feels like a creature of its own, it feels like a movie telling a story, not like a retelling of a book that told a story. The microcosm of this is the karaoke scene in the movie. It’s quite possibly one of my favorite parts of the movie, and it has no analogue in the book. It was created for the movie because movies are audio/visual storytelling. The book leans into the plot, the science, the characters. Things a book can portray very well. However, the movie isn’t as scientifically dense, and instead leans into the visual grandeur and spectacle, the music, color language.
in conclusion, Project Hail Mary book and movie both very good 👎👎👎

alright I've got to do some quick math to explain attitudes towards AI to my boss.
we're looking to create an AI policy, and when we were talking about this, my boss (older millennial) was genuinely shocked to hear that younger people do not (seem) to view AI positively (a la the recent commencement speakers being booed)
please rb for larger sample size!
Question 1/3
What is your age, and do you feel AI is a net positive or net negative in our lives today?
under 18, AI is a net positive
under 18, AI is a net negative
18-29, AI is a net positive
18-29, AI is a net negative
30-45, AI is a net positive
30-45, AI is a net negative
46-60, AI is a net positive
46-60, AI is a net negative
over 60, AI is a net postive
over 60, AI is a net negative
Question 2/3
How often do you visit or interact with museums/archives (whether in person or online)?
Frequently (multiple times per month)
Often (multiple times per year)
Occasionally (a couple times per year)
Rarely (once every couple of years)
Never :(
Question 3/3
If you saw a museum was using AI in exhibits, marketing, research, etc., would you be more or less inclined to visit that museum?
under 18, more inclined
under 18, less inclined
18-29, more inclined
18-29, less inclined
30-45, more inclined
30-45, less inclined
46-60, more inclined
46-60, less inclined
over 60, more inclined
over 60, less inclined
Thank you for helping with this data collection. Please rb for as big a sample as possible!
Edit: AI here is referring to generative AI, rather than closed models or custom made LLMs trained on internal datasets
Edit" "tumblr is not the best place to do data collection" "most biased sample group" yup. cool. good.

This poll hasn't even been active for 24 hours yet. I am so obsessed with it. I made a spreadsheet about it. And I look forward to adding the final results once it has closed.
There's a lot of "sample bias" feedback and although you're not wrong, I would challenge anyone to find a platform or sample source without that bias in either direction and an even bigger challenge would be finding literally anything else that over 97% of responders agree about.
I don't think over 40k of us can be so easily dismissed and companies and marketers would be choosing their own bias to ignore the market with its very loud feedback.

Cracker practicing some tissue box fetch! Fetching a tissue is a bit difficult for rats because the texture and grip is so different than our other fetch items - but once they figure it out then they can fetch just about anything, so its a great skill to work on. Great job Cracker!
