Thing is, in the vocabulary of an old-fashioned British person, I feel like "dear" is every bit as flexible as "bless your heart," to an elderly Southern lady. "Bless your heart," can mean, "oh my goodness, I'm so sorry that happened." It can mean, "it is a wonder to me that your two overworked brain cells can make you breathe and walk at the same time." It can also mean, "fuck you. Fuck the horse you rode in on. Fuck the fleas on the horse you rode in on."

Likewise, "dear," can mean everything from, "we are officially roommates but generations to come will ship us," to, "you, sir, should be run out of the country by a whole army of deranged vuvuzela players." And your hiring manager never has to know which extreme this letter falls closer to.

I know this isn’t probably part of school curricula anymore so here you go:

Personal or friendly letters use dear as a greeting most often; professional or business letters use honorific + last name or full name. If you do not know who the professional letter needs to be addressed to, then you address it to dear + the position, but yes it’s weird. You can also say To The Hiring Manager or Office of or even To Whom It May Concern as a last resort. Emails can be a bit less formal where you can just use a first name, but if you’re using it to, say, submit a cover letter, use the classic letter format.

Speaking of format, friendly letters go:

Here’s the body of the letter with an indent (5 spaces) at the beginning. No need for double spacing. You can throw the date in at the top somewhere if you really want to, but it’s not a requirement. We’re all friends here.

I’m writing the body of this letter with a double space after the greeting and no indent because it is a business letter. A cover letter will include a header with my contact information and the date I’m writing it. Follow the Luke Skywalker in Jabba’s Palace structure in that case. Business emails should also follow this format because it’s the same format for an old fashioned memo. You can even opt for a colon instead of a comma after the greeting if you want to be fancy.
