More Protesters Arrested As Obama’s Deportation Record Nears 2 Million
Eight demonstrators tied themselves to one another wrist-to-wrist in the falling snow Tuesday morning, and lay down across the road in a human chain, blocking access to an immigration detention center in Elizabeth, N.J. Detention officers on their way to work waited in a line of cars stretching down the street.
For nearly a minute, the steady blast of a car horn drowned out the sound of the protesters’ chants. By the time the police arrested the protesters about a half-hour later, snow had begun to pile up on their bodies, hiding the slogans on the T-shirts they had pulled on over their sweaters.
The protest was the latest in a recent series of demonstrations aimed at urging President Barack Obama to stop the deportation of undocumented immigrants. In the past year, supporters of immigration rights have expressed growing frustration with the president, who has overseen the deportation of nearly 2 million immigrants during his time in office, far more than any other president in history. With a deeply divided Congress now nearing its holiday recess, it seems nearly certain that another year will pass with lawmakers failing to make any headway on immigration reform.
In November, immigration-rights activists made headlines by interrupting the president during a speech in San Francisco, demanding that he use his executive powers to stop deportations of immigrants who would gain legal status under reform legislation. A few days later, Obama met with activists who have been staging a hunger strike for nearly a month in a tent on the National Mall. Since September, more than 80 people have been arrested in more than half a dozen protests around the country.
Jorge Torres, one of the protesters who was arrested, denounced Obama as the “deporter-in-chief,” a term that has become popular in immigration-rights circles.
“The president can’t be the deporter-in-chief and a champion for reform at the same time,” Torres said. “If he wants to help immigrants he can start by not deporting them.”

The Gainseville Area Students for a Democratic Society chapter at the University of Florida taking a stand! "UF student Conor Munro, an organizer with Students for a Democratic Society (SDS), said, “We can’t wait for the same Florida legislature who has for years tabled tuition equity bills and continually cuts funding to higher education. We must be the example to the legislature by demanding and implementing tuition equity at the UF which our board of trustees can do as seen with FIU this past summer. ” More on story here: http://www.fightbacknews.org/2013/10/20/university-florida-sds-demands-tuition-equity

SCRIPT "My name is ______, I'm calling from __(your city/state)___ urging President Obama to make an Executive Order to make DACA apply to ALL 11 MILLION #undocumented immigrants NOW! No more #deportations and no more #repression! DACA for all now!" ------------------------------------------------------------------------ TWEET THE FOLLOWING: @BarackObama give #DACA4All #11Million now! No more #deporations of our people and no more repression in our communities! ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Background Info The Legalization For All (L4A) netork is initiating an all-hands-on-deck, NATIONAL PUSH for Deferred Action to apply to ALL undocumented immigrants! NOW. This coming Thursday, October 4, 2013 we are calling on President Barack Obama to make an executive dicision: Make Deferred Action apply to all 11 million undocumented immigrants! #DACA4All NOW. June 27, 2013, L4A strongly condemned the inclusion of the Corker-Hoever amendment in the Senate 2013 Comprehensive Immigration Reform (CIR) Bill. On this same day, the U.S. Senate passed the Corker-Hoever amendment by a 68 to 32 margin. The Corker-Hoever amendment would increase militarization on the border, expand the E-verify workplace enforcement, andthe Legalization For All (L4A) network try to track the more than one hundred and fifty million people who enter the United States each year. This same amendment called for an additional $46 billion to further militarize the border, including 20,000 more border patrol officers, hundreds of miles of new fencing, and mandates use of military technology. Attacks such as these would mainly be felt by Mexicans and Central Americans trying to cross the border, leading to even more deaths. Friday, September 20, 2013 it was announced that CIR 2013 would not be passing. During the lead up to this announcement, efforts around the country were being made to pressure Republicans to act. L4A itself lead National Call-In days pressuring Representative John Boehner, Republican Representative Paul Ryan and Republican Senator Marco Rubio. In Arizona, a group of young leaders took to the streets and stopped a Detention Center bus from deporting a bus-full of immigrants. They didn't let it go anywhere. In Minneapolis, immigrant rights activists demanded a stop the deportations at the Hennepin County Jail. In Tampa, an immigrant rights caravan joined with the community and protested Marco Rubio. Los Angeles community members fought back against the use of neighborhood blockades by Immigration & Customs Enforcement (ICE). the Legalization For All (L4A) network When President Barack Obama stated he had no intentions of stopping the deportations of DACA recipient's parents, Obama chose to take a stand against the people. 11 million too, need DACA or an executive decision by the President to stop the daily, deportations of immigrants. We cannot let our families continue to be torn apart. These attacks on our communities and the silent raids of our homes and work-places is not how we want to continue living. We will not sit back and let these attacks continue. ENOUGH IS ENOUGH. It is also important to remember that while CIR 2013 may be stalled, it is up to us the PEOPLE to demand what is most beneficial to us. This includes and is not limited to our L4A pillars: 1. Legalization Now! The current Senate bill has a ten-year wait for undocumented to become legal permanent residents. This and other barriers will exclude many from legalization. Tell the Representatives to pass a bill including legalization . 2. No more militarization of the border! No drones! Right now hundreds of immigrants are dying trying to cross the border because the militarization of the border drives people to harsh desert areas. The current Senate bill will lead to military drones flying over millions of Americans who live within 100 miles of the border, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Tell the Representatives to oppose even more government surveillance. With the U.S. government already tracking our phone calls and emails, we do not want drones watching us around the clock. 3. Stop the Deportations!Under the Obama administration, there are record numbers of deportations. Tell your Representatives to support a moratorium on deportations while the legalization process is starting. Why should the government deport more people and tear apart families who will become legal residents? JOIN US. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Need More Info?
