Impmon stayed next to Hatty holding her hand. It was a tad paranoid that the kid in the mask would show up again and try something. When the bird spoke the imp’s ears twitched some, but it didn’t reply. Not directly to him anyway.

“There’s the possibility that there’s more doors than… attempts,” it got quiet as it trailed of a bit and tightened it’s grip on Hatty’s hand as a means of comforting. “I haven’t been here all that long, I don’t know how many tries exactly, just… that theirs been a lot.”

“The number of times I tried to find happiness. I don’t know the answer because I caused myself to forget all of them. I think the test here, is trying to find that number or to cause me to remember the number. As for what happens when we get it wrong. I’ll see what happens myself, don’t hate me for doing this Impy.”

The girl used her free hand to open the nearest door to where the pair were standing. What they saw beyond the Happiness 12 door was an image of Hatty crying in her bed. She was holding a drawing in her hand that looked to be ripped. When the girl saw this Hatty put a hand to her head and remembered the memory.

“I entered a drawing competition on a planet I saw. It was a simple childish thing, everything looked so fun that I wanted to take part. However, when I showed my picture some mean kid laughed at it and said it sucked. I got mad and used my umbrella on that person. Then, as I attacked I destroyed all the other entries. It was an accident! I didn’t mean to do it! I mean it! I only wanted to have fun with them!”

Hatty felt like she wanted to cry as this old memory came up. However, there were no tears. Instead, the voice from before began weeping. Hatty slammed the door shut while covering her head with her hat. She held Impy’s hand tightly.

“Aw rite... let's not open a lot of these doors than,” the Conductor remarked seeing the lass's reaction. “Certainly not more than one at a time.”

He hisses a sigh and looked over the doors and numbers again. He wasn't exactly eager to open a whole bunch more if it meant that Hatty would be forces to go through an old sorrowful memory. “I still think we ought to look for the highest number and try that one. Better than going one by one and dragging up a lot of bad memories.”

Fortunately, the perked up fox was now preoccupied at the result stated by the Conductor. “Really?“ Her ears twitched, leaning with pure curiosity. Of course, the name ‘Benjamin’ wasn’t the right name. Not that she hoped for, something told her that she was getting warmer, which made her ecstatic.

“Arguably,” he answered chuckling. Which turned into a few more coughs. After they passed he took another sip of the tea.

“Depends on what criteria your measuring with. Because there's others where yer still as far off from me name as all yer other guesses,” That was about as close to a hint that he'd be giving her. Was it because of where the name originated from? Because of the meaning of the name? Or was it simply because of where it was in alphabetical order? The Conductor sure as hell wasn't going to clarify.

Impmon huffed back, “Yeah? Well it sounds more like his movies are funner than yours, ya stick-in-the-mud.”

The imp didn’t actually know for certain. Hatty showed the virus that Murder on the Owl Express movie, and had only talked about the other director’s films.

Impmon huffed once more and looked away as a sign it wasn’t going to speak to that owl any further for the time being. Though its ear twitched when it heard him and Hatty mention a few things about their new surroundings. Impmon stayed quiet, but looked over the place as well. Maybe it can figure something out before that bird just to spite him.

Hatty already knew the meaning of what they needed to do. She chose to repeat the same phrase again intending for the pair to understand it as well as she did.

“At the end of the rainbow there’s happiness. And to find it how often I’ve tried.”

They had walked on a rainbow to a place where all the doors had the word happiness written on them. Each door held a number under that happiness sign. She could come out and say it herself, but these two were supposed to know her right? It should be obvious what was being asked of the three of them. They needed to go through the door that had the correct number underneath it.

How would they work out that number? Hatty needed to count the amount of times she failed to find her happiness. She didn’t want to say it outloud she wanted the others to say it. Hatty wasn’t sure she could count unless the others asked her.

The Conductor mulled over the line Hatty repeated for a moment. “So wot? Look for the door with the highest number marked on it?”

He let go of the lass's hand and walked over to a few of the doors scanning the numbers on them. “I guess another option would be trying them all in order? But what the peck happens if we open a door and it's the wrong answer?”

The Conductor tapped his foot for a moment, slight smirk still on his beak. “Aw rite, suit yerself, lassie,” he finally said with a shrug, “but even if ye aren’t in the film industry, ye can still talk about the parts that have caught yer interest.”

He hummed in thought as an idea came to him. “Ye said you’ve published some novels, aye? Ye ever fancy seeing any of them adapted into film?” Athene may have to get all those resources if she were to start out on her own, but the Conductor already had access to all of them. And years of experience working with them to boot.

“ M-MAYBE, BUT IT would definitely be… a challenge. “

The robot pressed a finger to her lip as she considered that. It would definitely be interesting to adapt one of her stories into a film, though it would likely come out looking rather surreal. In fact, she could see it in her mind – the angles, the setting, even down to the costumes. And it was definitely looking different from most of the horror movies she’d seen, despite also sharing many similarities.

“ I’m told that the way I write is kind of abstract. Surreal, even. I’d definitely want to preserve such elements, especially in a more serious movie. Otherwise, I wouldn’t get the emotions that I want from my audience. “

“Surreal, huh?” the owl hummed, “Interesting... tricky, but do able, depending on how exactly it's surreal.”

He paused a moment with his foot still tapping. “The possibly bigger problem would be figuring out what to cut an condense for length. Books have the advantage of being however long they bloody well want. Movies on the other wing... not many people want to sit through a film that's over four pecking hours long.”

“Point of view could be another issue. Jumping around a large cast or internal thoughts can be a challenge to translate across the two mediums.”

Not that one indeed. Even with a wrong answer, Fauna maintained a warm smile. “‘Thomas’ would have been a fitting name like yourself though~” she giggled. “Or maybe ‘Patrick’~ Another name that fits well like a ring~”

“Except neither of those are me name,” the owl replied between sips of the tea. He still looked and felt rather drained, but at least there was a slight smile on his beak. He coughed a few more times and waited to hear more guesses.

While Fauna took a seat, she just giggled at the train conductor’s response. “Oh dear, not even that lovely name~?” she amusingly sighed, shining her grin. “Well, if I wouldn’t be surprised, maybe your name might be Benjamin.”

The name of her departed spouse twitched her ears, and frankly not in the good way, but she became stoic in spite of the fact she brought it up. It was just a guess. Nothing more.

“That's-! Not it at all.” He said with a slight chuckle, not realizing the vixen had a more stoic expression on her face. He was keeping his eyes close as much as possible. But that wasn’t exactly easy to figure out since his feathers and hat obstructed them from being clearly seen.

He took a few more sips of the tea before adding, “That's arguably closer though. Depending on how ye look at it.”

The Collection Of Affection

Impmon stuck close to Hatty as they walked. It’s ears were drooped down as it tried to think of anything to block out the song. Dark Song got its ears to close up, but that left the virus deaf. It wanted to be able to hear everything else, just block out that sorrowful singing.

When it heard the bird talking, the imp looked over. Imp thing? The digimon huffed and puffed its cheeks the slightest bit at that. “I’m a digimon,” it clarified in a huff, “a digital monster. And specifically, I’m an Impmon. Other than the kid calling me ‘Impy’ I don’t really have a name like the people here, so just call me Impmon.”

Hatty wasn’t paying much attention to the pair’s conversation. She was more focused on the song, unlike Impy who tried to block it out, the girl embraced the lyrics as she had a feeling they were important for what lay ahead. As the rainbow path ended the trio entered a circular room with doors with the word “Happiness” pasted on them allong with a number below them. The song stopped, yet Hatty said the very first part of the song like the voice which sung before.

“Digital wot now?” the owl huffed. “It sounds like the sci-fi drivel Grooves comes up with in those nonsense films of his.”

The Conductor noticed the song had stopped and there were a bunch of doors around them. He hadn't paid too much attention to the song, but he could clearly see all the numbers on the doors. He scanned over the room looking for... he wasn't really sure what. Just something else that possibly stood out.

“We got to check all these doors than, lass?” he asked giving a side glance to the girl.

“Bah,” he huffed with a wave of his hand, “I may have a few tender moments in some of me films but I’m not devoting a whole movie to sickly-sweet fluff.” The Conductor scratched at the back of his head and added, “If anything, A’d try me wing at something darker.”

The owl was quiet while she talked about a few of the elements to cinematography. There was a slight smirk on his beak when she stopped herself. “By all means, keep talking. Sounds like ye have an interest in the craft, lassie.”

“ WELL, I MEAN, I just think it’d be interesting…“

Well peck, there was pretty much no way out of this one. While she certainly did share an interest in it, there was no real way for her to ever create anything of sustenance. Sure, her books were well-loved, but dipping her foot into the film industry would be so much different.

She’d have to hire actors, format her stories into scripts, and probably drop a fortune on a camera. Which was all doable, but writing novels pretty much guaranteed her anonymity. That would prove to be a challenge here.

Roger and Norville followed the ghost’s gaze to look up in the trees. After spotting the four eyes staring down at them, Rodger ended up jumping so bad that he ended up landing in Norville’s wings.

The Conductor ignored the pair’s fear and nodded to Snatcher. “Aye. Sounds good.” He took a few steps away from the scared owls before saying over his shoulder. “Best not rush getting all those notes and pictures either. Script’s pretty long of a rough draft and I don’t want to see ye two again till we’re done going over it.”

There was a childish laugh from the small creature in the trees, before they jumped down, landing in front of the owls. It looked… Like a cat in a sweater… She gave a grin, bounding around the two owls, her stubby tail wagging. “Kinda jumpy aint you? Man, you wouldn’t last five minutes in Subcon alone~!”

Snatcher chuckled to himself, heading right on into his tree home, coiling up on the red chair against part of the wall. “Lua will keep a good watch on them. She’s been in Subcon even longer than I.”

“Oh that's reassuring,” Norville quietly grumbled as he got Rodger out of his wings. Rodger wasn't all that thrilled to be more or less dropped back to the ground, and was less thrilled by the cat-like thing circling them. Norville however did try to be polite and after smoothing down his feathers, introduced himself. “But, um, hello. I'm Norville,” the one in green said trying his best to keep his tone even, “And this is Rodger.”

The Conductor on the other hand shook his head at the two one last time before following Snatcher into the hollowed out tree.

“That right?” he asked in reply to the ghost's comment. “Ye still keeping track of years then? Or it get to the point where ye don't bother to?”

He folded his wings over his chest and tapped his foot. Other than that the owl was quiet and stoic as he thought over her suggestion. He could see some of the point she argued. But on the other wing, why fix what isn’t broken?

He hummed a moment later and finally replied, “The myurrderrr mystery did do rather well.” He smirked once more and straightened his posture. “Another go at something more suspenseful might be a good idea.”

“ I THINK THAT’S a good start, yes… “

She couldn’t help but wonder if it was her bringing up her own work that sparked that interest. Probably not, but the idea of impacting someone else’s thoughts was quite interesting to her.

“ What will you go for this time, though ? While murder-mystery is great, there’s other options out there if you’re feeling stuck. Perhaps something darker, more horrific… or something lighter and more fluffy, if it’s too much for you. And I suppose you’d have to consider how you’re shooting this film, too – what kinds of colors and editing would go into whatever you choose to make. “

“ Colors, lighting, composition… It stuns me how even one of those things can turn a film on its head. A darker palette can bring a dark twist to something humorous and lighthearted. Likewise, pastel colors can soften something up and make it less intimidating. “

Athene suddenly broke her own train of thought when she noticed she’d been going on and on for a while. She’d been trying not to ramble, but it was hard when she had the attention of a real cinematographer. Her interest in the art just… jumped out.
