She takes them gingerly --- - not so fast that she snatches them, but her excitement threatens to bubble over as she takes them one by one. Geez, these must have been thousands of years old. ‘ Woah, ‘ Cassie breathes, inspecting them each with the same amount of care and intrigue. A small laugh bubbles up as she finally lifts her eyes from them to Chloe, overjoyed grin plastered on her face. ‘ These are so cool, thank you! You’ll have to tell me all about the trip! ‘

cassie’s still out cold when she comes into the room and perches on the edge of the bed next to her daughter’s unconscious form, curled in on herself. there’s a tuft of tangled blonde hair peeking out from under the duvet, and vicky offers her no aid from where she barely glances up from the foot of the bed before lying back down with a sigh. it’s a girl’s weekend, dad shipped off with uncle sam with the promise of not getting into ( too much ) trouble, and as such elena’s joked that the poor girl’s stuck with her for three days, what a struggle.

she’d opted to let her daughter sleep in a bit, but they have a full day at the beach scheduled, and elena pulls the comforter away from her face in order to brush her hair out of cassie’s eyes. they have a day of surfing lessons before them, skills that are entirely necessary to be passed down, mind you, but first there’s the matter of breakfast to attend to.

‘ hey, sleeping beauty, gonna join the world of the living? i’m gonna need my sous chef for banana pancakes. ’

When she was younger, Cass distinctively remembered being a morning person. ( Of course, those mornings she remembered barely being able to see over the couch, clinging to the dog for support, but mornings nonetheless. ) Where treasure was concerned or a flight to catch, she was bright-eyed and bushy-tailed, ready for the next adventure, but home was....different. Home wasn’t exactly the place meant for early mornings -- rather, she’d stay up late trying yet AGAIN to reach that damnable score her mother set. Well, that and the excitement from yesterday concerning her father and uncle’s departure.

The ever familiar tone of her mother’s voice snapped her from sleep like a signal, brow furrowing before sleep-heavy eyes slowly opened. It takes Cass’s mind one, two, three seconds -- the phrase banana pancakes pulls her out a little more quickly -- to boot up, and with a long and low breath she’s sitting up, rubbing at her eyes and hunting for her glasses.

Smile was shown before he took a moment to think about it. Certainly, he had found many things, but the most impressive of it all was hard to pick. Perhaps it was Shambhala, despite the memories which it held as well. It was impressive to say the least, yet he hadn’t exactly gotten away with anything from there —– except for some small coins. “Did you father ever tell you ‘bout Shambhala? ‘Cause that was quite somethin’.“

Oh, here we go. Cassie sits just a little bit further forward, hands resting on her chin. Perhaps this Rider guy could tell her all the gritty details her father refuses to share. ‘ Somewhat. ‘ There’s a burn in her eyes, an excitement for an adventure far before her time. ‘ But he held out on me for so long that I’m pretty sure he gave me the PG version. Perhaps if this were at home – or a more local, FAMILIAR setting – Cassie would have laughed it off and made some snide remark. Her mother and father alike were both straight up goofballs in times of relaxation. She had quickly learned growing up to take most of their so-called “warnings” with a grain of salt. But HERE, treading on soil she’s not yet known, her mother’s words make the girl’s brow furrow.

It is hot in the market, the sea of people dealing business and conversing among family members, and Cass has to crowd against Elena’s side as she brushes past locals. Nervous wasn’t so much the feeling as it was merely alert, and she keeps a sharper eye out for each individual she crosses. ( She was never unsafe with her mother, but she forgets that some countries aren’t as keen to outsiders as others. )

‘ You’re joking, right? ‘ She says it plainly, glancing at her mother from the corner of her eye. ‘ ‘Cause for once I can’t really tell. ‘

elena’s been asleep for maybe twenty minutes, tops, finally stopped tossing and turning long enough to kick the heavier blankets off and doze off in comfort. she’s always been a light sleeper, lighter still with a three year-old prone to making her own hours, and she makes her way back into consciousness with a light snort, not quite deep enough into her slumber to missing the sound of feet padding toward her room. there’s a light on in the living room down the hall where she last saw nate, likely dozed off with a book or pup on his chest and prone to wake up with a crick in his neck, but she’s more preoccupied with the glassy eyes peeking up over the side of the bed and the tangled blonde mane that accompanies it.

‘ hey–––––– ’ her voice comes out on an exhale, quiet from the lack of use over the past hour as she snaps to attention, and she’s already making a move to get up, offering blankets to the toddler she hoists up onto the bed. cassie sniffs, clambering over the comforter that’s been wadded up and pushed over to nate’s side of the mattress, and elena’s brushing her thumb under the corner of her eye, pad coming away slick from tear tracks, and she has to admit it breaks her heart more than a little to see her daughter in such a state. ‘ you’re okay, cass, i got you. ’

she retreats back into the pillows, asking cassie if she wants to use dad’s before she’s drawing her into the chest, wrapped up into the circle of her arms as she curls, a cocoon of mom and sheets and promises of no monsters or nightmares to be found here. her fingers toy with her hair, brushing through the strands as she waits for drowsiness to overcome her daughter again, shaky breaths turning into sighs and even breathing as she murmurs gentle reassurances and platitudes with a brief kiss to her crown. ‘ never gonna let anything happen to you, promise. ’

Cassie was a CURIOUS kid, no doubt about it – - perhaps that was her upbringing coming in to play. Never out of questions, always guessing what would be the next best step ; Aloy was full of information, whether she believed it to be important or not, and Cass was not afraid to try sparking the flame for talking. She shrugs, trying to think of a better response.

What's Cassie's social life like? What kind of people does she associate with? Does she have many friends?

Cassie, for the most part, does not have very many friends that are your atypical local neighborhood pals or friends from school. With the sort of business her parents are in, as well as the family’s shared enthusiasm for treasure and history setting in at an early age, she found herself at a loss during primary school for things in common with other children. I have a headcanon that Cassie did not stay in a public/traditional school setting for long ; she became distressed rather quickly and performed poorly in that type of environment because she often got bored with coursework she was levels above and she was oft singled out for her differences in behavior between the other kids.

This is not to say she doesn’t have friends, but they are more worldwide than local. Whenever her parents bring her along she is keen on being friendly with others, and she often times will make friends with the local kids in that particular area that they’re filming for an expedition. For the most part, her social interaction is with her family members (Sully and Sam included), the film crew, and people from all different walks of life – she’s not really someone who has a specific “category/type” that she sticks to for friendships. While she enjoys making friends, depending on the country they visit, it can be tricky – some kids don’t have ease of access to ways of staying in touch when she returns back home – thus it can be a little lonely at times.

She is definitely the type who would prefer to have very few friends but with close, heartfelt connections over being friends with everyone.

Oh, she absolutely was, but she had hoped that her mother wouldn’t catch on so damn quickly. ( Who was she kidding ; Mom was sharp as a tack and could outwit anybody. ) But there had been a shimmer of HOPE, however futile, that while Elena was good at reading ulterior motives, Cassie was better at HIDING them. She was her father’s daughter, after all.

How could she, after all, try to pass up the opportunity? It was an authentic polaroid; it wasn’t even in USE anymore in their family. Of course, she had coined all of her words rather carefully surrounding the aged camera – borrow and fast were her key runners, even if she was intending on keeping forever. She followed the sounds of a good photo op ; even her mother could relate, couldn’t she?

Cassie quickly slides to the defense, hands perching on hips in an indignant manner that could only be mirrored by her father. Time for the final battle, so soon.

‘ I’ll give it back, Mom. That’s the whole definition of borrow. ‘ Her lower lip purses slightly as she feigns offense. ‘ I’m disappointed that you don’t trust me. ‘
