I need to break down this kiss from 'Obsession'
If someone would have showed me this scene out of context, I'd call it super-sensual, intimate and tender. Bear trembles and exhales, whispering 'I love you' into the kiss. Maybe I'm not a biggest expert in romantic cinema (I'm really not), but it's a funfiction-level heterosexual male sensuality (it's a compliment) I've only saw in 'Atonement' (but James McAvoy is a league of his own, we know that).
But in the context of 'Obsession'... oh my.
Bear kisses Nikki like this after her infamous dinner freak-out, after literally using her (in a s*xual way) while not even looking at her, after her nightmarish, possessed-like night shenanigans and, of course, that frozen inhuman smile she held for a half of a minute just MOMENTS before this kiss. And after all that sick sh*t HE caused, he's acting like he's in a dreamy-steamy romance! F*cked as f*cked can be.
I am a huge TV Tropes buff and there's a great trope (it's even applied to Bear on his individual page) - 'Loving a shadow'. This is the core meaning of 'Obsession' - he never was in love with Nikki, he was in love with idea of her: pretty, hot, fun, nonchalant, kind-hearted, light-hearted cool girl. And the saddest and weirdest thing - we don't know was she really like this (yeah, we saw her pre-wish, but for like 15 minutes and drunk). He painted her as such not only for us, but for himself too. And if Nikki fitted this idea even for a second - he reveled in it to the last drop. Like dude lived in his real-life fantasy ignoring everything until that everything turned into full-on blood bath.
So maybe Bear was freakier than Freaky Nikki herself without any spell... I feel like there's something seriously undiagnosed about him and he's not just an assholish chickenshit.
Seriously freaking obsessed with 'Obsession' and about to watch it for the 3rd time in cinema (while it still there) in these DIY top and skirt, inspired by Nikki's iconic party outfit!
Bear hate aside, Michael Johnston did a PHENOMENAL job and I feel he's quite underrated and overlooked. For me Bear was super-nuanced character and surely not your typical 'horror villian'. I liked him so damn much in the beginning, really sympathized with him (his cry for the caaaat 💔), and felt pure disgust in the end - such a pussy, with the biggest capital 'P' imaginable!
And his voice! Wow-wow, the voice acting alone deserves huge praise! Also, looks - I see both Hugh Dancy and Anthony Padilla from Smosh (especially on his real-life pictures), and his beautiful expressive eyes and the whole type worked so well for Bear.
Pic sourse - IG, it's from deleted scene or something (looks amazing btw)
"Obsession" wouldn't be THIS perfect without its killer ending. And, guys, you know what? That shot of still-enchanted-Nikki and newly-enchanted-Bear (about to collapse in her arms), both bloodied and sickeningly mad about each other reminded me of these 2000s legendary album covers! Can't shake this feeling off, it's so similar not only in the imagery itself, but in vibes too.
bring back exactly this type of supernatural movies/tv shows male characters we've often seen in early/mid 2000s: pretty guys (curtain bangs are SO YES) with attitude, balancing perfectly between being nice and shady + somehow petty and whumpy
Cillian's photoshoot for GQ magazine (March 2024)
Can't comperhend how can he look so hot and done with everything at the same time 😄 my man has not only unique appearance but energy too
Acrylic (slightly modified by me) paint-by-numbers inspired by "Three Cheers For Sweet Revenge"-era Gerard 💉
Watched "Dog Day Afternoon". In first 10 minutes I:
a) admitted that Al Pacino has one of the most beautiful eyes ever (look at the gif, jeez!)
b) was sold;
c) knew it's gonna be something special.
And it was so freaking special! So ahead of its time it's even surprising - the biggest advice is to go into it blind! Great movie.
And a little more of a screencaps of Al as Sonny. Never understood anyone who said brown eyes are the least attractive - quite the opposite for me and he's the great example why.
What a magical "Sinners" still - enchanting and haunting 💫 wish it was HQ, but didn't find yet.
Production designers surely did their best with this picture!
I'm not into vampires at all, but damn it... This Irish fella surely can get my invitation and even take a bite!
Top-3 hottest male villains of all time, dare I say it (even regardless that fake af saliva).
Morris: A Cat For Our Times, 1986
Mood 4ever 😒🧡
Finally watched Sinners and wow, it was great! "Dived in" blindly, highly recommend to do so too. Film has THE definition of an ensemble cast, where everyone's work amazingly together and shine brightly on their own (Annie, you will always have my whole heart)
But one "sinner" impressed me more than the others. Not because he had my heart too (he surely didn't), but because I was beyond shocked. Film went really smoothly till 42 min mark and arrival (quite literal, he JUMPED into the frame) of Remmick.
It was Jack freaking O'Connell!
I knew him from only one movie - Eden freaking Lake, you guys heard of it? If you didn't, check it out, it's a small British movie, but I guarantee you, it will traumatize you and will haunt you forever - any time you'll pass by some group of teenagers, you'll recall it like a painful flashback.
And Jack is the one to blame.
His character, main villain called Brett, has zero charm, zero mercy, zero compassion, just a pure, unhinged psychopathy. Believe it or not, he's more terrifying than Art The Clown himself, because, you know, I can't really imagine Art "operating" irl, but Brett... quite the opposite.
18 years passed since Eden Lake's premiere, but I recognized Jack (and his haircut) in Sinners instantly. He has a very distinctive "bad guy" energy here too (those stupid kkk bastards who let him in??? like people, c'mon!!), but the vibe, the flavor of it is sooooo damn different. Maybe stupid bastards were not just very stupid, but also... charmed (+ pity him)?
With more scenes, interactions, songs, dances, speeches Remmick charmed me too, progressively. He was menacing af (like he literally drooled over Mary, the f*ck!), but also polite, mild-mannered and even reasonable. How he danced that Irish dance in circles and said the prayer in the water (while being a vampire!), huh? Those were THE EXACT blend of evil and theatricality I love in vampires! And I'm not really a fan of a genre.
And yeah, I know, I know, actor's work is exactly this - giving different and realistic performances, but Jack's range (while staying in villain's type of character!!!) shook me to the core. Probably new fave character actor!
P.s. that vampire's gimmick (or weakness?) with an invitation is the best ever. Love it from another brilliant vampire's movie What We Do In The Shadows. Maybe Remmick just had to go to New Zealand to live happily ever after?
Everything about "Rocky Horror Picture Show" is brilliant, but these 2 scenes are on another level - pure power of color and lighting! Gorgeous, tasteful and both explicit and implicit in their burning desires ❤💙
