tartah and cocoâs relationship is fascinating and i really adore tarco but i feel like the most recent chapters make it very clear theyâve chosen custas and agott over each other which just further substantiates their respective queer coding. tarco begin their relationship developing a bond of mutual ignorance, bliss, and ânormalcyâ [read: heteronormativity], but as the story progresses tartahâs world is completely expanded by custas, and he sacrifices cocoâs trust in him to chase after custas in parallel to oluruggio/qifrey (who are also very queer). coco chooses to stay with agott rather than follow him.
itâs also interesting bc custas and coco are deliberate parallels and sort of an âandrew in dragâ situation for tartah who clearly has a crush on coco and also had his relationship with custas open with a classic âdo you like me or something?â at the same time you have agott who is pretty clearly meant to be a lesbianâeven just from basic narrative coding, coco, tetia, and richeh all have young boys theyâre positioned opposite of to explore what young crushes look like, whereas agott only has that with coco.
i feel like tarco were so necessary for advancing each otherâs character arcs, but i do think shirahama sort of deliberately pulled off a bait and switch with them. tartah has a crush on coco, and maybe coco reciprocates, but itâs that sort of âfirst loveâ that comes with a lot of idolization and isnât necessarily realistic. as both characters begin to understand the reality of the witching world, they drift further apart. as they realize the falsehood of ânormalcyâ theyâre pushed further towards custas and agott. i still love them a lot bc theyâre the first they know to ever really understand each other. and yet, itâs through understanding each other they come to understand their respective selves and this ironically develops them beyond the other.
at this point no one can tell me agott doesnât have a crush on coco bc it just keeps getting louder and louder. your honour that is a baby gay if i ever saw one
Olruggio's Mannerism's as a Reminder of the Tassel Swap, Witch Hat Atelier Analysis
(Spoilers through chapter 93)
So Olurggio has this nervous thing he does where he rubs or scratches at the back of his neck. Fun little character quirk that does a lot to let us know whenever something is making him uncomfortable, stressed, nervous ect. Here are some examples.
(In order these are Chapter 8 after Qifrey says he should erase his memory if they erase Coco's, Chapter 40 need I say more, Chapter 88 after lying to the Knight's Morales) There are so many more examples he is always pulling this move.
We also see him do this right before confronting Qifrey about the tassel swap.
Whenever we see Qifrey and Olly arguing as adults, Olly usually rubs his neck either after relenting the argument, or if he's about to say something confrontational. This is exactly what's happening in this scene. But what's also fun here is that the first panel looks to me a bit like hes grasping for where his ribbon would be, and given his reaction afterward he hadn't noticed the switch until this point.
My initial theory from this is that Olruggio's nervous habit of reaching for his neck, was originally a habit of fidgeting with his ribbon. I still believe this, however there is no other point in the flashback ark where he does this, which could mean nothing but could also be extremely intentional.
It's significant that the first time we see him do this is after he's had his memories erased. He is grasping for something that is not there, both literally and figuratively.
