“they don’t give their interns handcuffs,” the boy sighed with dramatic disappointment. “and you can’t bring in your own, either. but if you must know.. top drawer of my bedside table,” he said playfully. “touché. i’m impressed. but i’ll have to disagree and go with the former. do you remember the live action movie from 2002? when they went to spooky island?” asher waited to see if she was following his words before he continued to speak. “the blonde girl shaggy was into .. isla fischer’s character .. she also called them scooby snacks. unless if in a deleted scene, along with somehow learning scooby was actually a dog and not shaggy’s grandma, she also learned the special nickname for his favourite treat.”

“i tried my best, i promise,” asher chuckled. he was happy he got an actual response, and wanted to keep it going. “i like your thinking. but is scooby that famous, though? is the mystery gang of such a high status for that to be possible?”

“not smart like become an intern or not smart like the badge and scooby doo thing?” he asked for clarification, feeling only the former was dumb in his eyes. “dorky, indeed. smart, not so much or i could’ve answered my own question about scooby snacks. but the answer to both is honestly out of sheer boredom.”

❛ okay, stay with me here… ❜  here he goes, off on another quest for answers to dorky questions, no doubt. or filling some poor victim in on the latest conspiracy theory. he’ll talk just about anyone’s ear off who’ll listen, and he’s quite clearly got a lot to say today in particular. ❛ you know in harry potter, yeah? when they’re like… uh — doing transfigurations, ❜  the type of long word he probably wouldn’t know if it weren’t attached to something nerdy.  ❛ when they change, say… a goblet into a cat, does the cat remember being a goblet? even though the goblet was previously inanimate and had no way of holding onto memories? or is it more like someone with amnesia who remembers how to walk and talk, knows things about the world and shit, but can’t remember anything personal or their own experiences? or is it like… being born a newborn kitten, except they’re immediately full cat size? maybe they just magic them a set of memories that don’t really exist. fuck, i don’t know, but it’s keeping me awake at night.  ❜

“or maybe,” he replied after pondering the question for a good minute. “maybe goblets do have memories in their world, making it possible for the cat to remember. i think when it turns into a cat, it just automatically know how to cat. maybe a cat somewhere died and like, they have nine lives, right, so maybe like 7 was spent shifting from a goblet into a cat.. like a reincarnation rather than transfiguration.”

jude just watched as the other boy picked up the rag, suddenly frozen. “hmm? oh, oh the storm?” a raindrop fell into his eye as if to answer his question. “definitely. i didn’t even think of bringing an umbrella out with me. let’s just hope we both don’t get caught in it while it’s really bad.”

the goofy smile plasted on his face fell with his stomach at the sight of the real badge in his face. “y-yeah interns don’t, really, uh, get those,” he stuttered under his breath, feeling embarrassed and a bit scared. “go ahead, ma’am.”

“i’m sorry yours got stolen.. but no, i don’t have one..” he said apologetically, though he was admittedly still confused. “like, at all, i mean. not even at home. you could always buy a new one or steal it back, right?”

“excuse me?” asher approached the nearest person and briefly flashed his wallet as if there were actually a badge inside, copying the real police doing real work a few feet away. “i’m, uh, with the police. do you mind if i ask you something important for scientific.. no .. investigative purposes?” he inquired, hardly waiting for a response before jumping into the next question. “are scooby snacks named after scooby .. or is scooby named after the snacks?”

“i guess i’m kinda you’re guardian angel, or something like that,” wisteria laughed gently, a hint of sincerity in her tone. in a way, she was. she was always there to take care of a drunk mo until she was able to sober up a bit. and deep down, she kind of liked it. her eyes followed the match as it fell to the ground, but moved back up to glance at the cigarette being offered. “thanks, but no thanks. i’ve got work in less than hour and i can’t really risk going in smelling like smoke, ya know?”
