The water crisis in Flint is getting worse and the media has pretty much stopped covering it. Not only that, it goes beyond Flint and into other areas of Michigan (like Detroit) (and even other states) as well. I found an article back when coverage of the water crisis was heavier that I wish I had bookmarked, because I can’t find it again. It showed a map of other areas in Michigan of varying degrees of also suffering from lead pipes.
A couple of years before the news broke of the Flint water crisis, my husband and I went to Michigan for a friend’s wedding. We stayed with my brother in law and his family in Milan. Our nephew had a rare form of melanoma not caused by sun exposure removed from his finger when he was 3. And my brother in law and sister in law proceeded to tell us of several other people in their neighborhood who had various forms of cancer and other illnesses. It got weirder when after showering at my brother in law’s house, my husband and I both had rashes are showering. The water had a strong smell and after shaving my legs they felt like they were on fire. On the way to my friend’s wedding, my husband asked me if I thought there was something strange about the water in their town and if all the illnesses among their neighbors and them were connected. I agreed the quality of the water was not good and it was really strange how we both felt after showering there. But my brother in law kinda waved our concerns away when we tried to bring it up.
Then about two years later the news broke about the Flint water crisis and that conversation came back to me. I really wish I could find that article again. I don’t feel the water in Michigan is safe period. The governor of Michigan needs to be held accountable for what he’s done. He had full knowledge of this. Also, the state of schools in areas like Detroit? Deplorable. Michigan’s government is terrible. Sad thing is, none of them will ever be had accountable for what they’ve done.
