Creating Art and Shifting Narratives with Deun Ivory
To see more of Deun’s work, follow @deunivory on Instagram.
“Representation is so important,” says illustrator, writer and photographer Deun Ivory (@deunivory). “I want to be the photographer creating a movement, somebody shifting the narrative around the way black women are portrayed or the way black women are viewed.” Before picking up a camera, the Chicago-based artist was considering a career as a fashion journalist. While attention to style and aesthetic are ever present in Deun’s approach, people’s responses to her work helped her internalize the profound impact she can have. “I also want to create a space where black women and black little girls feel valued, affirmed, empowered and represented in a very graceful way.”
ah - I’ve been featured by instagram! so happy that the narrative is being shared.
