“Family, huh? Sounds nice.” Ray purred at the scratching, feeling absolutely relaxed.  “Maybe I’ll bring my sister over next time as well, then. I’m sure she’d love to meet you girls. You’ve got a lot in common, after all.”

“You all family when you’re here.” Blake whispered softly, looking up at everyone as she spoke. It was hard to say that with a straight face, her distrust of Tor still keeping her on alert. 

“five parts? Thats crazy, I don’t even have time to read my school books. I would love to hear more about it though, it sounds like a wonderful series.” The small teen said with a giggle, it was true she didn’t have time to read but hearing Dis and Tor’s voice put her at ease. So to her that was better then any reading.

Tor turned to stare at Blake, just barely catching what she’d said. It didn’t really seem possible that she could mean it, but if she did… the idea of being accepted as part of Ruby’s family filled him with a sort of hopeless yearning, an impossible idea he wanted to come true.

 “Go on, pull the other one…” He muttered, trying to laugh it off, rubbing the back of his head as he looked sidelong at the girl he’d been struggling to resist his feelings for.

Ray looked over to Blake, with a little bit of shock. He smiled, however, looking around the room. “Been a while since I had a family larger than three.” He lay relaxed, thinking for a moment before speaking quietly to himself. “So far better than most of my original family. Points to you guys.”

Ray purred at the soft touch. “Well, I think there would be a few issues regarding that, flattered as I am. But above all I do have a home already. Doesn’t mean there can’t be visits every now and then though.”

“Well I’m sure Weiss and Blake won’t mind your company. I can tell Blake feels completely safe with you, and I know Weiss will want you to visit the little kitten every now and then.” Yang mentioned, scratching behind Ray’s ears once more. 

Ruby mentally looked over the wrapping, wanting to copy those skills for the next time she had to wrap something. “Ohhh thats a fancy looking book!”

“Looks like ya’ve already been accepted into th’ family, bro.” Tor said, shooting Ray a grin.

“Heehee, it’s one of Tor’s favorite series,” Dis said, giving a little aside to Ruby. “A five-part ‘trilogy’ about hijinks in outer space that highlight the absurdity of life and human nature by looking at it in the larger universe, showing how ridiculous and insignificant the whole thing is, and how we should all just calm down and be content with the fact we will never fully understand it.”

“Ye’re fuckin’ tiny an’ fluffy as hell. Ten outta ten would pet again.” Tor said, finally setting Ray down with one last pet.

“S’good t’ know I’m loved,” He said, wrapping a shoulder around her this time and pulling her a bit closer.

“Ok, I managed to find it,” Dis called out as she came back over with a neatly wrapped rectangular object.

As soon as Ray was out of Tor’s grip, he quickly climbed up Yang to land on her shoulder. She had been waiting patiently, after all. “No one can resist a good fluffy cat. It also works for getting free food.”

Yang reached up, petting Ray’s head softly. “Oh wow, you are way softer then the other cats. I wish we could keep you here.” 

“Well o’course you’re loved Tor!” Ruby exclaimed, giving him a tight hug. She was temped to say other things, more personal things but decided against it. “Ohh thats pretty wrapping Dis, you gotta teach me your skill.”

“Exacto-knife, straight edge, and lots of scotch tape,” Dis told her, handing over the present to Tor.

He quickly unwrapped it, tearing open the back and ripping through the colorful paper to find a thick leather bound book with gold leathering. “The Ultimate Hitchhiker’s Guild Delux Edition. Thanks, kiddo.”

"K-ko-chan! Help!" Dis calls out from the doorway to the bedroom, face bright red and wearing barely-there lingerie with straps criss-crossing all over her body, pinning her arms behind her back. "I was going to surprise you with this special underwear for Valentines Day, but I don't think I put it on right!"

Ko stared at Dis in shock, face bright red. After a moment she started laughing, walking up to Dis. “I think you put it on perfectly.” Ko looked Dis over a few times, leading her to the bed. “I am going to thoroughly enjoy this present for many hours.” She gave Dis a quick kiss. “I’ll take care of dinner afterwards.”

“Thanks, Rubes.” Tor said, grinning as he leaned over to give her a kiss on the cheek. “Glad ya decided t’ throw it fer me.”

“Oh, that reminds me, I still need to give you your present, Tor! I’ll be back in just a moment.” Dis said, going over to her bags to retrieve the gift.

Well that was a sweet heart warming scene. Though, Ray did feel a small amount of sadness from his past loss, but it quickly subsided. “So, Tor, first time petting and holding a cat. Thoughts?”

“Well everyone I love and adore gets a party! And you fit that category, so ‘course you would get one!!” She cheered with her usual grin.

“I wonder what his gift is…” Blake pondered, taking a moment to rest from her playtime with the cat.

“Yep, that’s how you do it,” Dis said, nodding her approval of Tor’s technique.

“Don’t worry, Yang, you’ll get a chance again soon.” Ray curled into Tor’s arms, letting Tor feel his fur. “Doing much better there, Tor.”

With the Ray being a cat, as well as in tor’s arms this gave Yang the perfect chance to take a picture. Which is exactly what she did, reaching into her pocket she pulled out her scroll and snapped a few quick pictures with Tor holding Ray.

“This is the best birthday party ever Tor, so once again, Happy birthday.” Ruby cheered, her hands full with the kitten just like the rest of her team.

Tor watched carefully, feeling his right eye twitch ever so slightly as Ray was craddled against Ruby’s breast. “Right, think I got it. Sort of let ya sit on my arm, and then pull ya into my chest. Can I give it a go?”

Now here was a person that knew how to hold an animal. So warm. So comfortable. Ray suddenly felt a small amount of killing intent coming from Tor. Once he realized where he was, it wasn’t hard to find out why. Whoops. “Sure thing, Tor. Biscuit! Come keep Ruby company.” As Ray jumped out of Ruby’s arms over to Tor, Biscuit left Yang to take his place with Ruby. He hit Tor’s side and quickly climbed up to his shoulder. “Alright, Tor, let’s try this again.”

“Hey!!” Yang called out, pouting slightly as her kitty friend left her for her sister. “Not fair.” 

“awww Biscuit!” Ruby happily picked up the cat, holding it closely to her chest. To her this was a dream come true. She did prefer dogs, but they were too heavy for her. “Good luck Tor!”

“That’s better,” Tor muttered, quiet enough that only Ray would hear him.

“How’m I s'posed t’ hold ya then?” Tor asked, his tone a bit of a huff. He had not been done playing with the kitty.

“You hold them by supporting their hindquarters and holding them close to your chest so they can rest on you,” Dis explained as she scratched under Ray’s chin. “I can show you in a bit if you like.”

Ray purred at the pettings and scratchings. “When I feel like it, yes. Depends entirely on mood and circumstance, really.” Ray looked back to Tor. “It requires a more gentle touch. Just takes a little know how, really. Dis. Ruby. If one of you would like to demonstrate for our animal challenged friend?”

Ruby gladly set her food down, reaching up to give ray a tiny little scratch before carefully picking him up. Her arm carefully laid flat for him to rest his hind leg, while still having a safe and secure grip close to him. Her hand carefully wrapped around him, bringing him close to her chest.  “Zwei never lets me hold him, so this is truly an honor Ray.”

“Ehehe, yeah, your cat powers have that effect on people. I remember what happened the first time you used them in front of me.” She laughed, thinking back on how they had ended up taking a somewhat litteral cat nap together on the couch.

“Hey Rubes, check out our fuzzy new friend here.” Tor picked Ray off his shoulder and held him up by his armpits, letting his legs dangle down. “Don’t think ya been properly introduced t’ Ray in his ‘Little Rion’ form.”

And suddenly Ray was hanging in the air. “Hey there, Ruby. You seem to be taking this rather well, all things considered.” He tilted his head up to look at Tor. “By the way, Tor, I know you don’t get a lot of time with animals but this is not proper cat holding technique.” Ray wiggled his arms in such a way to drop out of Tor’s grip, landing gracefully on the ground. He quickly climbed up Dis, making sure not to hurt her, stopping on her shoulder.

With all the girls distracted with the cats, Ruby was able to get some close time with a cat and her new friends. She set her plate of food down on a counter walking over to gently pet behind Ray’s ears. “Well hello there little guy, Do you change into this form often?”

Also, letting the larger cats teleport back to a place far away where they can do their business.” Ray rubbed his nose with his free paw, looking over to Dis as she walked over. “Well, things happened, and now we’re here. Everything kind of spiraled out of control starting with the summonings.” He gestured to the 3 girls, each with a cat they held and or played with.

Ruby smiled behind Dis, munching on her sweets. She didn’t mind the cats one bit, in fact she loved them all here. If Zwei played nice he could of stayed but she was content with the cats.

“Litter boxes or not, all of these cats are amazing.” Yang said, sighing happily.

The cat form continues to be popular with the ladies. Score one for zodiac powers. “No problem, Yang. I can stay like this as long as I want.” Ray was almost tempted to scare Tor a little by popping out the claws, but decided against it. Maybe later.

“Honestly if Headmistress goodwitch saw this, she would freak.” Blake chimed in, chuckling as she played with the cats.

“Well I wish we could live with all these cats, along side Zwei, it would be awesome!!” Yang jumped around, dying to get a hold of Ray.

“Yang, yer only sayin’ that cause ya haven’t seen how many litter boxes this guy has t’ keep.” Tor said, booping Ray’s nose on the ‘this guy’.

“Oh, I was wondering where Ray went.” Dis said, coming over from the food table with a positive pile of sweeties. “It’s been a while since I saw you as a cat.”

“Fer real?” Tor asked tentatively as he turned his head to look at Ray. After a moment’s hesitation, he reached out a hand to pet Ray’s little feline head. It felt soft, and silky, the ears seeming to give off extra warmth. “Shit bro, ye’re so fuckin’ fluffy.”

“Life is uncertain, eat dessert first!” Dis said as she went over to the table to load up a plate full of sugary treats. “And once we load up we can see what the rest of the party goers are up to over there.”

Ray lay still as Tor pet him. ‘This incident does NOT leave this room, got it?” He looked over to Yang, who stared at the man-turned-cat. “Oh yeah, this probably looks a little shocking. Did I not mention this part?”

“Hecks yea!!” Ruby chuckled grabbing a few sweets from the table. For once in her life she was happy for all the food they had made. More then needed, but it was perfect.

“You never mentioned this at all, holy shit can I hold you next?” Yang asked, her eyes still wide with surprise.

“Yang! No cussing!!” Her teammate yelled at her, a slight red hint on her cheeks from anger.

“Yeah yeah, I know my cuddle privlage’s’re gonna be cut if this ends up on facebook.” Tor said as he picked up one of Ray’s paws and squished the little pink pads between his fingers.

Ah shit. Even if it was Tor, Ray couldn’t stand someone being so down. Especially at their own birthday party. All Tor wanted was to pet a cat but not a single one was comfortable enough around him. Ray scratched his head, rubbing against his ears. Wait a second… Fuck it! It was Tor’s birthday. One time thing. “Tor, if you really want to pet a cat, there is one sure option.” Ray’s legs bent slightly, and he jumped. But as soon as his feet left the ground, his body shrank. He landed on Tor’s shoulder softly, now in the form of a yellow cat. He attempted to speak, but only gave a meow. He pat his throat with a paw, trying again. “Sorry, been a while since I tried to talk in this form. Now listen, this is a one time deal only, because it’s your birthday. And do not tell Ko, or Ras will use your arm as a chew toy.”

Ruby nodded, she felt safe with Dis as if she were a family member. Something she rarely felt with anyone, in all honestly she wanted to hug her tightly and thank her for even spending this time to talk to her. “Right, sweets time!!”

“Holy shit….” Yang whispered under her breath as she saw the once man turn into a full on cat. It was far to much for her to handle at the moment.

Ray gave Tor a small smile of hope. “We can try again another day. I’m sure I can get at least one cat to let you pet them.” Seeing Yang’s confusion, Ray thought for a moment. “In simple terms, let’s just say ‘Cat Demi-God’.”

“Thank you Dis, but I’m sure it’ll work out for the best. I don’t want to scare him off.” Ruby gave her usual cheery smile, but honestly she was sad. She wanted Tor so badly, but was scared if she did try anything it would ruin everything.

“Okay, that makes way more sense. I’m so jealous, you get all these kitties!” Yang told him, she loved her dog but truthfully she was more of a cat person herself.

‘Like he isn’t feeling the exact same way.’ Dis thought to herself, sighing internally. Much as she wanted to, it was no use trying to meddle any further. “Well, I said my bit. Now come on, let’s stuff the both of us full of sweets until you can give a real smile again.”

“Uh-huh. If ya need me I’ll be sulkin’ in the corner with Dis and Ruby. Least those two won’t run if I try an’ pat their heads.”

Biscuit took the opportunity when Ray’s grip slackened to race inside his jacket, climbing up his back and poking her head out of the top, facing Yang. “Well, maybe next time, then. I think she’s warming up to you. Give her a little more time.” 

As Ray turned to face Yang, the cat jumped out of his jacket and onto the blonde girl’s shoulder, delicately balancing there. “To answer your question, Yang, as Tor mentioned earlier, I am the personification of the Leo Zodiac.” He opened his jacket a bit to show his shirt, emblazoned with the Leo symbol. “Which, now that I think about it, I don’t know if you have Zodiacs here. But that’s not important. Basically, I am a being created by Gods to help keep balance back in our world.” Ray reached out to pet Biscuit, the cat purring happily at his touch. “Each person like me has a basis in some specific form, and for me that would be feline creatures.” Ray’s ears twitched and his tail swished in front of him. “My powers and abilities are based around that, and one of those is control. Of course, the only commands I give under normal circumstances are to not hurt people or break things. I don’t like taking away a cat’s free will or personality.”

As much as she wanted to, she had to shake her head. It was wrong for her to try and force an answer she liked. “Thank you Dis, but Tor is my best friend and my crush. I don’t want to rush things and ruin my chances, I’ll wait forever if that means he’ll be happy.” 

“That would explain a lot.” Blake mentioned, turning to look at the group. She knew it was odd that she felt safe around him Yang on the other hand, gave her best nod she could, pretending to understand. “Riiggghhhtt.”

Tor sighed, hand dropping to his side as he hung his head. “Yeah, sure. Maybe in 50 years her tail’ll stop fluffin’ up when I get within five feet.” 

“I don’t think waiting forever is going to make anyone happy.” She said, her eyes wandering over to Tor. They lingered there for a few moments before she looked back at Ruby. “I can’t push you into talking to him, but I do think you should at some point. Tor might seem pretty direct, but he isn’t always as straightforward as he should be.”

“Can I let you in on a bit of a secret?” She asked, leaning in close and further lowering her voice. Peeking under Ruby’s bangs into her eyes, Dis’ eyes held a glint of seriousness even as they continued to smile.

“Definitely can’t, but I can point out they got some mean claws an’ teeth. Which, as ya saw earlier, usually get directed at me.” He said, looking at the cat in her arms with an expression somewhere between wariness and wanting.

“Of course. I’d be happy to help anytime.” Ray pulled out his phone, adding a new contact, and handed it to Weiss to input her number. “I would start off with getting a litter box by the end of the day. And yes, she is housebroken, so you don’t need to worry about that.”

Ray overheard Yang and Tor’s conversation, and was shortly standing beside them. “Tor, I have told you a thousand times, my cats will not harm you. Hiss, or in some cases roar, maybe, but not harm. Observe.” Ray reached out and gently took Biscuit from Yang. He held the cat close to his chest, though she did get a little antsy as he got close to Tor. “Biscuit, can you please stay still for a moment? I know Tor’s got the whole smell of death thing going on but he is no threat. Okay.” Biscuit shot Tor a glance, but settled down in Rays arms. He made sure his hold was enough so that she couldn’t freak out and bolt and hurt someone by mistake. “Okay, Tor, if you want to pet her, do so gently, and slowly.” Whenever Tor visited Ray’s house, the blonde would order the felines to stay calm and keep their distance, so Ray doubted Tor every really had the chance to get near an animal like anyone else. Now was a perfect chance.

“A secret? Oh my gosh yes!!” The teens eyes sparkled, trying her best to stay still. Although it was hard with all the sugar inside of her and the hype of a secret.

Weiss took the phone and easily put her number in, setting the phone down to pay attention to her new kitten. “Welcome home Maya, you’re gonna make a fine addition to our team.

“ohhhh, is this going to go down bad?” Yang chuckled, watching them interact. “How are you so good with these cats Ray?”

“Tor really likes you quite a bit.” Dis said, a hand cupped over the side of her mouth so the others wouldn’t be able to read her lips. “He mentions you a lot, and from what I know he doesn’t normally hesitate when he likes someone. You should ask him why he’s holding back, and don’t be satisfied with anything he says until he gives you a real answer.”

“I don’t wanna pet her if she doesn’t want me to.” He said, even though he was already cautiously reaching out with one of his large, calloused hands. He’d never been this close to petting a fluff ball of any sort before, and it was sorely tempting…

Biscuit took the opportunity when Ray’s grip slackened to race inside his jacket, climbing up his back and poking her head out of the top, facing Yang. “Well, maybe next time, then. I think she’s warming up to you. Give her a little more time.” 

As Ray turned to face Yang, the cat jumped out of his jacket and onto the blonde girl’s shoulder, delicately balancing there. “To answer your question, Yang, as Tor mentioned earlier, I am the personification of the Leo Zodiac.” He opened his jacket a bit to show his shirt, emblazoned with the Leo symbol. “Which, now that I think about it, I don’t know if you have Zodiacs here. But that’s not important. Basically, I am a being created by Gods to help keep balance back in our world.” Ray reached out to pet Biscuit, the cat purring happily at his touch. “Each person like me has a basis in some specific form, and for me that would be feline creatures.” Ray’s ears twitched and his tail swished in front of him. “My powers and abilities are based around that, and one of those is control. Of course, the only commands I give under normal circumstances are to not hurt people or break things. I don’t like taking away a cat’s free will or personality.”

“Again, I plead drunkenness. Not a great time to make decisions.” Ray watched the girls play, and he couldn’t hold back a smile. They were all so happy and having fun. It was fantastic. Noir was now nibbling on the string, Biscuit was trying her best not to fall, and Weiss’ new friend had curled into her lap. 

“Happy to hear it, Weiss. I think I am a pretty good judge of character, and I think you and your team will take good care of her.” Ray kneeled down, holding a hand out to the kitten, and the little furball jumped into Ray’s hand. “Alright, little one. Remember how I said I’d find you a nice family?” The kitten nodded happily. “Well these nice girls here want to take care of you. If you go with them, make sure to not cause too much trouble, okay? What do you think?” The kitten jumped back into Weiss’ lap, nuzzling the girls hand and meowing. Ray looked back to Weiss. “Congratulations, the adorable one has accepted you.” The blonde stood up again, taking a step back. ‘She’ll need a name, of course, and if you need any tips on taking care of a cat I am here to help.”

Ruby nodded, still looking towards the ground. She knew it was true, but she was still sad overall. Although she didn’t mind, she would wait years if that meant they could date. “Yeah, but its nice just being friends right now. Just good old bonding time.” 

“I’m going to name her…Maya.” Weiss held the kitten close to her, like a mother holding a child. “Would you like to exchange numbers so if I need to ask anything I can reach you?”

Yang was half tempted to bring her cat over to him, but decided against it. “Aw c’mon Tor, you can’t deny the cuteness of the cats!”

“Can I let you in on a bit of a secret?” She asked, leaning in close and further lowering her voice. Peeking under Ruby’s bangs into her eyes, Dis’ eyes held a glint of seriousness even as they continued to smile.

“Definitely can’t, but I can point out they got some mean claws an’ teeth. Which, as ya saw earlier, usually get directed at me.” He said, looking at the cat in her arms with an expression somewhere between wariness and wanting.

“Of course. I’d be happy to help anytime.” Ray pulled out his phone, adding a new contact, and handed it to Weiss to input her number. “I would start off with getting a litter box by the end of the day. And yes, she is housebroken, so you don’t need to worry about that.”

Ray overheard Yang and Tor’s conversation, and was shortly standing beside them. “Tor, I have told you a thousand times, my cats will not harm you. Hiss, or in some cases roar, maybe, but not harm. Observe.” Ray reached out and gently took Biscuit from Yang. He held the cat close to his chest, though she did get a little antsy as he got close to Tor. “Biscuit, can you please stay still for a moment? I know Tor’s got the whole smell of death thing going on but he is no threat. Okay.” Biscuit shot Tor a glance, but settled down in Rays arms. He made sure his hold was enough so that she couldn’t freak out and bolt and hurt someone by mistake. “Okay, Tor, if you want to pet her, do so gently, and slowly.” Whenever Tor visited Ray’s house, the blonde would order the felines to stay calm and keep their distance, so Ray doubted Tor every really had the chance to get near an animal like anyone else. Now was a perfect chance.
