“You don’t know that,” He argued uselessly. It was true. It wasn’t like Louis had ever indicated interest. Back when they were on good terms, he would play with his hair and jokingly flirt with him, but Ryan was under no illusions. He knew it was all platonic on Louis’s side. “Things change. It’s just—I barely know you and I already know I’d be better to him than you would.” He crossed his arms over his chest. “I know I don’t own him, I just care about him so yeah I know a thing or two about what he d-deserves. It’s better than Styles, and it’s better than you. He might not see that, but I do.” He frowned. “Not everything was fake,” He said, more to himself than to Wesley. “It’s fine. You know, that he doesn’t like me. I know he doesn’t. It doesn’t change a single thing. Even if he did have feelings for you, that wouldn’t change anything either. You still wouldn’t deserve him or know how to treat him. Not even a little bit. I stand by that.”

More people seemed to want to theorise about Payton than help her out. “Yeah. I’m blessed to have her in my life,” Louis agreed, rubbing over his arms. “Yeah,” He confirmed, tightening his hold on himself. “I appreciate that Ryan, I do. You’re a great guy. You’re certainly attractive, but I’m just not into you. Oh, fuck off. You claim to respect me so much, to want to be good to me, but you don’t even respect me enough to think I can make my own decisions or like someone who isn’t a total piece of shit! You can’t even respect that maybe, just maybe, I have the capacity to know what I want. You don’t know the first thing about him. You don’t even deserve to. But I’ll tell you one thing. “I—You’re right. You’re right. Sorry. I shouldn’t be, um, especially since I don’t really…I don’t know her that well.” Thing was, he would like to. Payton had something about her, a kindness in her manner that he found himself drawn to whenever he spoke to her. The other, more pressing thing was that he found it difficult to speak to her or to anyone. It took time and his consistent company to grow comfortable speaking to Louis. He nodded, glad Louis knew how lucky he was. Not that he doubted he did. Louis never took the people in his life for granted. In fact, he often afforded them more chances and concern than they deserved. “I know. I know you’re not,” He rushed to say before Louis snapped. It was like time had rolled back. Like they were back at that club moments after he kissed him and Louis was furious and hurt. His heart fell to the pit of his stomach hearing all this, seeing the way he talked about him with burning conviction flashing in his pretty blue eyes. It stung knowing that none of that passion or loyalty would ever be for him. “Okay,” He said, a long moment after Louis finished off his rant. He blinked, dropping his gaze. His shoulders slackened with defeat. “Okay. I’m sorry. I didn’t realise he meant that much to you.” He gnawed on his lower lip for a moment before he spoke again, lips parting slowly. “I hope you’re right about him. That he’s worth it. I really, I really do. You deserve that.” He swallowed, his throat constricting painfully. “I made the wrong move just now, thinking I could convince you to want me instead. I know you. I know that once you care about someone, it’s unconditional and non-negotiable and I think that’s partly why it’s so hard to get over you. I want that.” His eyes finally lifted to meet Louis’s again, reaching out to touch his cheek gently, thumb barely grazing over his cheekbone as he searched his eyes. “I’ll stop asking,” He promised, leaning down to press a lingering kiss against his forehead before drawing back. “Just be careful, okay? My heart breaks when yours does.”

“I think it would have helped her more to be around her friends and the people who love her,” Louis suggested off-handedly, as though he weren’t speaking from personal experience. He felt only slightly sympathetic at how put-out Ryan looked, if only because he knew better than anyone rejection was a bitch, but it wasn’t the first time he was plainly telling the boy he wasn’t interested. His persistence was damning. “You wouldn’t be intruding, but uh, yeah. I’m really looking forward to it. She’s one of my best friends,” He murmured. If he were honest, it was his highlight, the only thing illuminated in a bleak horizon. Slowly, he felt like everything was falling apart, and he was losing his grip on everything he held dear. What he needed right now was a friend, especially when he was spiralling as badly as lately. Quality time with Payton was exactly what the doctor ordered. He resisted the urge to rub over his clothed arms, reminding himself that the throbbing of his freshest wounds was only in his head. He went from sympathetic to plain angry in less than a minute, his eyes gaining a hard edge. “I’m not talking about my ex,” He hissed out. “But even if I were, you would be well out of line.” He licked over his lips. “This might be hard for you to understand since you’ve clearly not come to terms with the fact I don’t want to climb on your dick just like all the models and D-list celebrities you were in the tabloids with before you met me, but I’d only be disrespecting myself if I allowed you to take me out just because you won’t take a fucking hint and I feel sorry for you. Either apologise or leave. Or both, actually, in that order.”

“I mean, um, sure, but you never know, maybe she didn’t—like, feel okay enough to um, to be around people,” He said, seeming uncomfortable. “You’re very lucky to have a best friend like Payton, she’s…She’s a really great person, um. Not that you aren’t. You are, you’re wonderful. Just, uh, yeah, you deserve friends that are as wonderful as you are.” He noticed anger split into Louis’s eyes and immediately felt his nerves grow awry. He had said the wrong thing. Again. “You’re not,” Ryan replied dumbly. “There’s…There’s someone new?” He frowned. “I’m not going to apologise. All I want. All I’ve ever wanted is to be there for you. To treat you like you deserve. If this guy you like is so great then where is he? Why are you alone? Why do you continue to settle for men who aren’t worth your time?—Why can’t you…I just want a chance to show you I could be good to you.”

“Styles?—Harry Styles? That’s…He’s?” He paused, frowning. It made so much sense now why the curly-haired musician hated him so much. “You?” Ryan squinted slightly as he looked over him, feeling a little sick and embarrassed. “I d-doubt Louis would give an arrogant asshole like you time of day.” But maybe he would. Maybe this privileged rich kid wasn’t lying. He swallowed. “Then again, his taste in men is pretty shitty. It would actually make total sense,” He mumbled bitterly. “I have handled Louis.” He released a frustrated breath. “I already ordered your damn drink. Do you suffer from short term memory loss?”

“A metal arm?” Ryan’s mouth twisted dubiously. “Are you sure? Th-that’s like...um, was it a prosthetic?”

“No…I don’t know why she was still there to be honest. It’s kind of weird, if you ask me.” An awkward look crossed over his features when Ryan basically asked him out. “Uh,” He paused, licking over his lips. Why was he so hellbent on saying no anyway? It might be a good change to hang out with someone who wanted him around. It would be easy. He knew how Ryan felt, and God knows Ryan was too soft to ever hurt anyone, not even someone as breakable as Louis, and yet all he could think was it would be a lie to even pretend he wanted his company. “Look…” He fiddled with the hem of his shirt. “I’m planning on going with Payton. She’s out now and we kind of have this thing…But um, you could come along?” He sighed. “I know you probably were asking for a date just now, but I don’t think it’d be fair to you. I still…I don’t feel that way about you. And the way I don’t feel about you, I might feel about someone else. It wouldn’t be right to say yes. You know?”

“Weird?…Maybe she just needed more, um, more help, I uh, I met her dad and he seems like, really concerned.” The hopeful look he wasn’t even aware he was wearing dimmed slightly as Louis was clearly searching for ways to put him down easy. “Oh,” He said, trying and failing not to sound too disappointed when he said he was already intending to go with someone else. “Of course, yeah, um. No, I-I wouldn’t want to intrude, like, she hasn’t hung out with you in a while, I guess, so, don’t um, don’t worry about it.” He flushed as Louis said he knew he wanted to take him on a date, confusion sinking into his features as he said he might have feelings for someone else. “Still? But that guy is—Louis, that guy is an asshole, and you’ve been over for months—I…I just. I just don’t understand why you keep disrespecting yourself by giving yourself away to guys who clearly don’t care about you that much.”

“Let’s hope you won’t,” Richard finalized, shutting the door behind Ryan quietly. Payton was tracing shapes onto her mattress with the pad of her index finger. Sleep didn’t come nearly as easily to her as it used too and even then it didn’t help that the volume in the hospital was far from quiet with all the sounds echoing down the hallways especially at night. When she lifted her head to greet her visitor, she was in no way shape or form expecting Ryan; he was probably the last person she expected to visit her. She looked behind her as if there were another patient he had been there for. “H-hi. Hello. What brings you. . that is lame. H-hey. You look w-well.”

Ryan looked utterly torn when he saw her, almost immediately speechless. His grip tightened. “Um, I—I brought you this,” Was the first thing to come out of his mouth, lifting his hands to show her the stuffed, patchwork piglet he had clasped between them. “Her name’s um… W-Winnie,” He informed her, approaching the bed and offering it to her. “H-Hey,” He frowned, unsure how to feel about the fact she seemed so surprised he’d come to visit her. “I guess, um, but I’m not. I feel—Wow, just, I’m really glad you’re okay. How are you?”
