Have been seeing transmed discourse on tiktok and everyone is saying "just do what you want" which i agree with, but also the DSM5's chapter on Gender Dysphoria acknowledges not all trans people experience gender dysphoria.

The 2026 Gender Census is now open!

The 13th annual international gender census, collecting information about the language we use to refer to ourselves and each other, is now open until 13th August 2026.

It’s short and easy, for most participants it takes 5 minutes or less.

After the survey is closed I’ll process the results and publish a spreadsheet of the data and a report summarising the main findings. Then anyone can use them for academic or business purposes, self-advocacy, tracking the popularity of language over time, and just feeling like we’re part of a huge and diverse community.

i think you should be allowed to identify as trans without retroactively saying you were also trans in the past. i think the "born this way" rhetoric is limiting and you should be able say stuff like "i was fully a girl when i was a kid and now im a boy" without it invalidating your current identity but maybe that's just me

Me personally, my first identity was being gay, my second identity was being a trans girl, but i never let go of that gay part while being a girl, cause it was the base identity that allowed me to be a girl and it didn’t feel wrong. Then i went back to being a gay boy but i was forever changed 🪄. I had residual dysphoria from when i was a girl, as a gay boy. I also went through labels like nonbinary, agender, neutrois & xenogenders during quarantine. But again, never let go of that gay part and none of my previous identities were wrong. They’ve been compiling on top of each other, my gender has never stopped developing. At this point being gay has become my gender- and also im a guy now- but without being gay i wouldn’t be a guy if that makes sense. Gay first, gender later.

Anyway, that’s the story of how im a cis(?) gay guy with dysphoria. I use the labels transfem and genderqueer too but i don’t have a strong connection to them. If i had to choose one label, gay would be just fine for both my gender and orientation.

I think this is how most complicated/“contradictory” identities and experiences are made. They have layers or stories behind them. I feel like i was born gay but everything else that followed was a new development, other people feel like they were born blank slates and everything about their identity was developed. Some identities aren’t something you’re born, you become them through experiences and time, and can’t really be fully explained just by 1-2 word labels.

I understand lesbian trans guys & gay trans girls, butchgender lesbians, people who are trans cause god revealed it to them, black people who say being black is part of their gender or why they’re nonbinary, girls who were 100% straight- had traumatic experiences with men- lost their sexuality and developed a newfound attraction to women and nonbinary people, cistrans people, people whose gender is their orientation etc, cause i listened to their stories for like 5 minutes. It’s complicated, yes, but it’s not that hard.
