in what might be the biggest hear me out i've ever posted (very loosely inspired by these prompts)... here are my stranger things circus au thoughts:

in a somewhat "something wicked this way comes" esc scenario, vecna traps children via a traveling circus. trapped children become acts in the circus and do not retain their memories outside of their roles in the circus. when they do remember, they are still trapped (i'm picturing a similar situation to holly in s5)

vecna is the ringleader operating under the alias "mr. whatsit"

this would operate in a completely separate universe from canon. so everyone's first brush with the upside down is this circus. robin is at the circus with the odd squad and doesn't know anyone yet. stancy is broken up and steve's in his aggressively flirting/trying to get her back stage

nancy's the first one to figure it out because holly goes missing early on and she's looking for her before she gets trapped in the circus. i think the moment nancy sees holly in the circus all her memories come back and she becomes hyperfocused on trying to escape

stobin get trapped as literal conjoined twins. which is so unfortunate for robin because she hates that guy fr (but by the time they end the circus they are aggressively codependent, obviously)

the first person nancy breaks out of the trance is robin, and the two of them (plus steve as an unwilling tagalong) work together to end vecna's curse

general rapidfire ideas for the gang's circus roles: - nancy as either an acrobat/contortionist or aerial silks (she is NOT a sharpshooter, but she does acquire a gun at some point i think and it's probably a pivotal moment for steve to realize he's been putting her in a box this whole time and in love with the idea of her rather than her as a person) - billy as a strongman (right hand to mr. whatsit and an antagonistic force to the escapees) - dustin as an animal tamer (+ dart) - lucas as a fire performer (this is based off vibe alone) - max as a trapeze artist (idk it gives skater adjacent vibes) - el as a magician. or a clairvoyant/fortune teller? - will as a mime - mike as... a human cannonball - eddie as a ventriloquist (ahem... master of puppets?) - holly and her kid ensemble from s5 are all like. baby clowns idk

the thing I really enjoy with Nancy and Robin is the way that Robin likes Nancy being in control, but not in a way that she takes a back seat necessarily. In season 4 Robin announces that Nancy is in charge while all the older teens take the boat out onto the lake. Later, when Nancy tells Robin and Eddie to stay put, Eddie is ready to follow that order and tells Robin that they should wait because Nancy is in charge. And without skipping a beat Robin goes, "I made that shit up!"

Robin knows when to assert and support Nancy's leadership and then knows when not to listen to her and dive in anyway, and I love that sort of push and pull to them. It's a similar dynamic to earlier in the season with Pennhurt. Robin is content to let Nancy take the lead, but when shit starts to go south, Robin follows her own instincts to help get them out of trouble.

And for Nancy, she starts to really value Robin's out-of-the-box thinking and creative solutions that Nancy could not have come up with on her own. I think Nancy is a very stubborn character who believes her plans and ideas are the best, but Robin ends up surprising her and forces her to reevaluate ways to solve the mystery or problem in front of them.

the thing is I truly just can’t let ronance go, every time I think I’m normal about them I remember literally any detail and I’m obsessed all over again. The most canon non-canon couple ever genuinely. Everything they do from the moment they start interacting just emphasizes how good they are for each other. And then you get into everything in the books, the barb between them, the shared yearning for something more than Hawkins that no one else understands, the juxtaposition of Robin vs Jonathan in one way or another and who’s really a good partner for Nancy, in every sense of the word. Like. It’s been four years and every once in a while I still stop and think holy shit they’re so good together

sometimes i remember watching the stranger things finale at my grandparents' house in maine, and when the ending came and i was sitting there in shock and horror my grandmother said "what about will? does he find love?" and my sister was like "yes he did, he had that guy he was with at the end, remember?" and my grandma just said "i dont know....i dont think that counts"

Robin being a little weirded out because Mike is extremely interested in her love life. Like, it’s all he wants to talk about, “Are you dating someone? Who are they? How long? What’s their name? Oh, you broke up? When?”

Obviously at first, she’s super vague, attempting not to out herself. But after a while (and after Steve puts a worry in her head that Mike may have a crush on her), she finally tells him she’s gay.

Mike doesn’t even seem shocked or disappointed. If anything, he seems even more excited than he had before, constantly asking her about her dates or if she has a crush on anyone and other similar questions, even getting Holly to start asking her instead whenever she starts to ignore his questions, all of which is highly concerning from Robin’s perspective, but she kind of pushes it to the back of her mind and just gives him the bare minimum in hopes that’ll be enough to make him leave her alone.

She finally mentions it to Nancy one night at a sleepover, both of them lounging on Nancy’s bed doing their own thing. Mike was being weird and quiet earlier at dinner, staring at Robin nearly the entire time unless she glanced over at him, and when that situation is brought up, Robin decides to open up to Nancy about the entirety of it.

“Yeah, he’s been acting weird as hell around me. Steve is convinced he has a crush on me but, god, I really hope he’s wrong.”

Surprisingly, Nancy freezes, face pale, so Robin rushes to add that she thinks Mike is a good kid— a shithead, but a good kid— but, obviously, it’s a little uncomfortable to discuss her love life with him, especially now that Steve has her so worried that Mike may have an ulterior motive.

Nancy is silent for a long moment, then buries her face in her hands.

“Oh, I’m gonna kill him.”

Turns out, the only reason Mike was asking all those questions was because Nancy had opened up to him about her own crush on Robin and he was trying to give her ‘updates’ on Robin’s love life in order to convince her to go for it. She had just thought he was getting those updates subtly, or through gossip, not that he was just straight up asking Robin all these questions.

It works out, anyway, but Nancy still glares at Mike every time he haughtily insists that him being her wingman is the reason she and Robin got together in the first place.

After getting out of the hospital, Eddie and Steve somehow fell into a whirlwind romance and now they have an apartment together! Eddie is still riding the high of it all one day when he has someone from his new job over and they say “Are you sure Steve lives here?”

“Huh?”

“It’s just, this apartment is extremely you but I’m not seeing anything that says ‘Steve.’ Granted I don’t know the guy too well, but…”

Eddie looks around. Sees a lot of metal and fantasy shit, a lot of dark colors. He knows if he went into the bedroom he would find Steve’s colorful wardrobe and the kitchen is stocked with dishes and utensils that Steve picked out himself but that’s it. Theres not a single sports thing to be found and not a single poster or tape related to anything other than metal.

He’s not sure what to make of it. Brings it up to Steve later, asks why there’s nothing that Steve likes around the apartment. And Steve says something devastating.

“It doesn’t matter what I like.”

Spraying each other with the garden hose when they’re supposed to be watering the flowers

Arguing over whether vanilla bean ice cream is a valid ice cream flavor (it’s Nancy’s favorite) (“Here’s your milk flavored milk. I asked them for extra tasteless flecks. Enjoy.” “Thank you, Robin, you’re so kind”)

Nancy finding out that Robin has taken kitchen scissors to another one of her old shirts (she’s not complaining)

Midnight drives with the windows down and Bowie on the radio

Nancy’s constant sunburns

The dark freckles that start to appear on Robin’s nose

Scraped knees

Coconut sunscreen

Box fans in window frames (carrying in the scent of hot asphalt and unmowed grass)

Hanging upside down from tree branches

Trying on the stupidest sunglasses

Apple flavored beer

Totally uncool jean shorts

Piggy-back rides

Damp hair ends and the smell of drying chlorine on skin
