hey guys, I don’t get on ao3 to read ai. if I wanted to do that I would download an app and make it write something for me. I get on ao3 to read the talent i know this fandom possess within every ships tag.

I commented on a prongsfoot fic there’s no room for ai in our fandom when I KNOW this ‘author’ used ai to make that story. They deleted the comment and added a note to the bio saying it wasn’t their story and they have permission to share.

Fat fucking lie. Stop tainting fandom spaces with ai. Fandom spaces were created to engage with each other about what we love and to share our talents and entertain others using the stories/ships/shows/movies/books we love.

It’s ruining ao3 to be uploading ai works. All for what? Clout? Because you had an idea but couldn’t write it?

People pour their heart and soul into writing stories for YEARS and you want a free pass all because a computer wrote 150,000 words for you in a month.

GET AI OFF OF AO3! It’s VERY obvious when you use it and I will not be fucking supporting that slop.

as much as i agree with you on there being no room for ai in fandoms please, please for the SAKE of god do not do this. There might be fics out there that you may think are ai, and i’m not saying this is the specific case, but you need to remember ai copies HUMANS. So if there’s a fic out there that seems made by ai but isnt and you do something like THIS it’ll do far more damage than the actual fics that ARE written by ai.

If you suspect a fic is written by ai, don’t interact, don’t engage. That’s the general rule of ao3.

I get where you’re coming from, but it IS ai. there’s gotta be line where you can call out users for generating ai fics otherwise they will not stop because people WILL read it and engage.

if your fic isnt ai then you have nothing to worry about because we can TELL. no matter how many times you proof read, there will be errors and other things that show it’s a genuine work. even published works through credible publishing houses have errors and continuity issues. I will continue to call out people who post ai because they genuinely don’t see an issue with it solely due to the fact that some people don’t care and will read the fic regardless, while some may not even realize what they’re reading.

That’s exactly the thing, there will be a time where you won’t be able to tell. And then what? I understand where you’re coming from, but you have to understand that there will be a time where this’ll do more harm than good. The fact that ao3 is a land with no censorship means that you are going in at your own risk, if the fic isn’t well tagged you WILL be exposed to things you don’t want or like and that is a risk you are putting yourself in. As I said before, i do not engage with ai content, but i do understand that in this day and age it is something that i can come across with without even knowing, but i wont go on a witch hunt to find and expose “ai writers” when the fic may not even be ai.

I just don’t want the little fic writers we have to be discouraged from writing because they’re afraid they might be flagged as ai even though it’s genuine!

I hope this doesn’t come across as mean or rude, I’m not looking for a fight, and if our views differ i wont press further. But this is what I think, and I had to speak out about it.

As you said, some don't realize what they're reading. I read it. Is it the excessive use of metaphoric prose? respectfully, provide the signs. Saying "I can tell" only leads to people posting about 'hunches', which is a concern for me since I am w writer and my feed has been filled with writers leaving because they get falsely accused when they poured hours into their stuff and it makes me scared, because just anyone can say "I can tell" and then boom that's the end to my public hobby.

I've been falsely accused of cheating on school exams, had to retake a different, much more difficult version, wasn't even in the unit material so of course I got a fucking 60 but anyway. i've been falsely accused of talking shit about my friends, was cut out from the circle, so accusations have become a permanent anxiety for me because I put so much of my time in studying and being there for them, only to realize that those groups only ever saw me in such an impersonal way. Readers in general approach fanfics in such an impersonal way. gimme gimme gimme.

The truth does not matter if the majority feels irked.

I also know a few writers who post 100K in a little over a month. Some people write fast. They call it flow state. Some people write everything and then post it all within the hour. Some people use hefty metaphors. Some fics I've read have stiff dialogue, but my mind doesn't first go to 'AI' because I know beginner writers struggle with dialogue, I was there, many novelists would prefer if they didn't have to write it at all. Writers get called AI because they write 'too smart' so what the fuck do we even do at that point, dumb ourselves down? Ah ah ah, can't do that either, we'll get called cliche and repetitive! (frustration isn't directed at you)

A complete absence of typos isn't indicative either. Writers are perfectionists and edit literal dozens of times and will not post it until it's spotless. Writers forget details, you're right. But... AI contains typos in their prompts. AI also forgets details. None of this is indicative by default. There are too many exceptions and factors to be considered.

I don't think readers truly understand how terrifying this is. I understand you guys are trying to stick up for us (Idk if you're a writer, I don't mean to assume), but writing is a VERY vulnerable thing to do. it isn't some "hmm what can I do to this character today", it is very serious to us. We put pieces of ourselves in it, just for someone to criticize us with total indifference or speculate with gnashed teeth, feels like such a slap in the face. I don't think readers truly understand that when we say just ANYONE can say "I see a wire!", we mean ANYONE can say it.

I wasn't exactly rolling in receipts on either occasions. Why? Because I told myself "I know I didn't do it, so that's all that I need." 🤡. Guilty until proven innocent in this world. What a luxury that brings for suffering creators.

Thing with fanfiction is there's no degree to accuse. No experience. No age requirement. That's why it is called witch hunting.

I don't have words for generative AI usage, because most people online have a low reading level (no offense, objectively spoken). of course they aren't going to notice, it's fast food for them, I lose more of my faith in humanity with literacy each day. it does hurt to see those fics get thousands of hits and engagements and crickets over here...but at the same time I find 'hunches' and AI detectors harmful (novels from 1910 being flagged as AI, AI websites being the ones providing these tools), on a more personal level actually, because as the other person said, AI does copy humans. Some writers have a drier prose, autistic or any other case, so they try to make up for it with purple prose, try to make it fatter, which AI happens to abuse. AI copies you(and fail). Humans dig into you(and succeed). so providing reasons would be helpful for discussion if you haven't already.

This isn't a 'right or wrong' reply. This isn't a 'gotcha'. This isn't a challenge upon your intelligence. This is hardly about the fic in question. My concern is the lack of discussion and consideration.
