MSA Cure Guide
I’ve seen so many rumors circulate about how MSA isn’t curable, how MSA is something that is absolutely a Furby owner’s nightmare. Have you wanted a cure for your exhausted little friend, but not even known where to start?
I have the guide for you. Most of this is rehashed from Furbytech’s MSA cure guide but since it’s not easily found (it took me several days of searching ‘MSA’ to even come close to a redirection post) I figured I’d make something accessible, or spread the information.
Let’s get right into it, shall we?
Step one: Skin and de-shell your Furby.
I’m not going to go into how to skin your Furby here.
Step two: Locate the tilt sensor.
The tilt sensor is what makes the rattling sound inside your Furby, the mechanism that wakes them up! When this is dirty, that is the most common cause for MSA. MSA, as far as I know, is a programmed response to dirty sensors. Cleaning the back and stomach sensors is recommended as well when following this.
Step three: Pry that sucker open.
The sensor is generally easy to open, don’t be afraid to remove the hot glue sticking the metal piece to the cap, that makes it easier to leverage out. Be careful with the metal pieces inside! There are two parts to pull out once the cap is undone.
Step four: Remove and polish.
The tilt sensor ball must be taken out to polish. This can be done with tweezers or your hands, it doesn’t really matter. Polish the ball and the metal discs with a Q-Tip or cotton ball. (one disc is hanging by a wire outside of the sensor cylinder, one still inside the cylinder. The ball bounces between each one to create the tilt disturbance.)
Step six: Replace all parts by following these steps in reverse.
No need to hot glue or fasten the materials in unless you feel like it’s necessary. Test your Furby before putting it back together, just to make sure their MSA is gone. If you try this method and it does not work, again clean all of the sensors. Something more could be wrong, or it could be that some fibers of your Q-Tip or cotton ball are stuck to the sensors! Be very careful with your materials, but this should work otherwise.
Best of luck to you and your sleepy Furbies! Normal sleepiness is 1-3 times of the Furby saying they’re going to sleep again. 8-15 times of the Me Sleep Again is more of the area where you would use this method. If this does not work, please contact me either via reblog with details, or shoot me an ask. I will be glad to help!
I had a neat repair case today that I thought might be interesting to share! I purchased this particular Furby a few months ago, but was never able to get his motor started through back patting or gear spinning through the beak. Today, I decided to open him up to see what was going on inside.
To my surprise, one of the main power wires had become completely disconnected and its contact joint was covered in corrosion, so it seems the reason his motor wouldn’t start was that he’d never been getting any power at all. After cleaning the contact and stripping the wire, he now wakes up whenever I hold the wire to the contact! I’ve now given him a temporary repair with hot glue, but will have to try and get my soldering iron working since the hot glue is too weak to hold long term.
I'm well aware that the entire pop cultural memory and image, insofar as it even exists, of Teddy Ruxpin is either "creepy toy in the style of Chucky" or "joke about ridiculous reboots of soulless 80's nostalgia properties" but every few years I'm reminded of how ridiculously wonderful the art in the original books is/was and how weird and interesting the worldbuilding was and I want to go find and scan all of the stuff that's probably in my mom's basement
It's just such a consistently expressive and lovely style of illustration in a really well-realized fantasy world-- like, there absolutely should be a big stupid coffee table art book of everything involved in the creation of this property. In a better world illustrator David High would be a household name and we'd think about Ken Forsse as a Henson-like figure rather than like. A guy who got bankrupted by the laser tag company. I am not convinced that the only reason we don't is because of all the teeth-achingly stupid business decisions made by World Of Wonders (including like. buying out dissident stockholders for millions of dollars and uhhhh not delivering already purchased products to retail stores) followed immediately by the '87 stuck market crash.
Like! Look how ridiculously charming all this is!!! How is this not remembered as a beloved children's fantasy properties!
sorry for the YEARS long hiatus but im back with a big update!!! my friend found this BEAUTIFUL mother goose at a community sale (for $5!!!!) and immediately got her for me!!! she only knew that she was mechanical, not about the cassettes but the sale went for one more day so we decided to go back together-
-and we found tapes!!!
i went to put one in and quickly realized the spinner wheel was completely loose, but after opening her up that seems (knock on wood!!!) to be the only thing visually wrong!!
i glued it back on and am now just going to wait to test her again in 24+ hours :) praying she doesnt have any more issues but we’ll take that as we go :) no corrosion or major stains either!!
she is obviously missing her eyelids but hopefully i can figure something out for that (if anyone has any advice let me know!!) but im very excited about her :)
im also working on crocheting a new bonnet for her :) ive never owned a tape player toy before and im so so happy with her
forever true in my heart
