The whole "fear of a tumblr implosion" thing made me think maybe I ought to collect and offsite some links to places I may be found, so I made a StrawPage. There's not a lot on there yet other than links but I'll continue to play around with it.

i see your "philip michael thomas hand acting" and raise you philip michael thomas mouth acting. that twitchy half smile when he first meets sonny. the lip biting. the smirk when he tells brenda "thanks for breakfast." everything he's doing when that lady in "whatever works" is photographing them and rico is visibly trying not to burst out laughing. he's always doing something
Oh yes! Love his smirk, and the lip biting does things to me... He is always doing something, and it adds so much to make the character real and multi-layered. I can't speak to his other roles because the only other thing I've seen him in (besides the brief cameo in Starsky & Hutch) was Nash Bridges, but he really brought Rico to life.
I suspect he was born to play that role.

I had to immediately look for myself and I feel like this post needs the addition of the very first line in the pattern description
people should be allowed to have low ambition, and also be able to feed a family on the salary of a cashier at a convenience store.
And! We need cashiers. And convenience stores. And I think it's kind of broken that society says people who want to do stuff like that have "low" ambition (not you OP, I get you're using it illustratively because that's what society labels said jobs) and don't deserve to live at the same standard as people with "high" ambitions.
If we need someone to do a job, that job is a role in the community and deserves not just a salary but cultural respect for the role.
"high" ambition jobs are all jobs that involve domineering and controlling others. "low" ambition jobs are all jobs that involve service to others. Have you noticed? Because I have noticed.
But serving others is actually more needed than controlling them.

probably the worst attitude tumblr unintentionally cultivates is "the world out there is completely dangerous for you and no one can possibly understand you, so you should isolate yourself from it and avoid interacting with it as much as possible"
Time to roll out the Andrew Marr quote again...
"If you put away social media and you walk out into the streets and you look at real people, three-dimensional people, they mostly smile back at you. If you look around you- you see perfectly decent, ordinary people getting on with their lives and inclined, by and large, to rather like each other, that is the real us. Let us not be fooled."
Casting Paul Williams (5’2”) and William Finley (6’4”) to play Swan and Winslow is objectively the funniest decision they could’ve made.
Yesterday, I was at dinner with some friends and briefly forgot Harrison Ford’s name, but I was like, “His name is a president and a car,” which is how we got such acceptable alternatives as McKinley Camry, Van Buren Gremlin, Clinton Infinity, and Range Rover Cleveland.
