ăâ§ă~ Rosetta rushes forward to catch the drink suddenly thrown her way, the bottle refreshingly cool against her palms as she glances up at him with a scoff. âPfft, that sounds about right, boy scout that you are.â As mocking as she may have seemed, she really did appreciate Lestâs kind and understanding nature. The guy didnât have one malicious bone in his body. And while she didnât mind how easygoing and agreeable he could be, sheâd be lying if she said it didnât frustrate her some. Always shrugging things off and going with the flow⊠if he wasnât careful, some creep could take advantage of that.
Straightening up, she raises her brow with a slightly offended look, free hand moving to rest on her hip. âWhy, do I look like I need rest?â Rosetta knew her own body better than anyone else, and she knew her limits. She was pretty much running on fumes right now, and probably looked it, too. But that didnât mean she wanted other people pointing it out.
Even though she knew that Lest was right, that she did need a break, her stubbornness and pride overpower her sensibilities in the end. Her stormy waters, always fighting against calm ones like his. âThatâs sweet of you, really, but Iâm fine.â
Before she can even respond to his next offer â the answer of which would have mostly likely been no â he suddenly hoists himself out the window, startling Rosetta a bit. Grip on her juice tightened, she reflexively takes a step back and gives him a look of incredulity before quickly regaining her bearings, head shaking as her eyes roll skyward. âYouââ
Normally she would have given some sort of snappy comeback, but his words stop her. Iâll be happy to be there for you. Simple words, sure, but the blonde couldnât help but feel that they held a certain weight to them. It wasnât often people said that sort of thing to her when they werenât trying to suck up, or keep from making her angry. Her instinctual need to regard people with skepticism spurs her into trying to find some sort of angle or motive behind his intentions, but with Lest she couldnât think of any. None that made sense, anyway.Â
That sort of compassion⊠it didnât feel so bad, to be on the receiving end of it every once in a while. She opens her drink, idly mimicking his words from earlier. ââŠI donât know, worker bee.â She waves her drink towards him, making sure not to waste any of it as she does so. âIf you want to help and waste your fun afternoon following me around, be my guest. This Queen Bee will be putting you to work, though, so hereâs your chance to back out before itâs too late.â
âWell, Iâm fine is always an acceptable thing to say until you arenât really fine anymore.â He murmured to himself as he landed on his feet. But that was the problem wasnât it? No one ever really said they werenât fine until it was too late. Lest contemplated to himself as he dusted his pants off. Well, he wanted to trust her judgement there. It wasnât like she had an health bar floating above her head for him to discern otherwise. But... perhaps you could call it intuition?Â
All he could do was throw his offer in the air and hope she would grab hold of it. Resilience and dignity held her afloat for so long, so could he blame her? There was nothing else that could be done if what she wanted was to swim against the current. And she didnât seem like the type to need a light house to lead the way back either. That, he supposed, was her âfineâ.
That is, of course, until she pulled on his life line.Â
He laughed gently, under his breath. It kind of felt nice that she was easing into it at her own pace. Perhaps he could help her out yet. âIf thatâs the case then Iâll gladly take some time out of my afternoon for you, your majesty.â Dipping his head politely, he took one arm to his chest for a bow. It was a little silly, but he felt like amping up the elaborate motions to make her laugh. Or mock him. Either would work, pfft.Â
âDonât worry too much, Rosetta. It's always more fun when you work with someone else, you know. And long as Iâm doing whatever I can, I find a job well done the most productive fun one can have, haha!âÂ
Pleasant at heart and gentle in nature, Lest found the most comfort in helping out other people anyway. It wasnât so much of a waste of time as it was his own little âfineâ. Yes, he was fine. Or wait-- perhaps he was more than fine! It was the least he could do for people who had so much to shoulder in a day. And it wasnât like Rosetta was troubling him in any way. Though... Tilting his head, Lest wondered how many people she intimidated with those ultimatums of hers.Â
âBack out?â Why was she talking like it was a bother to work with her. Or like she was a bother to be worked with? âI wouldnât abandon you in your time of need, Rosetta...â
Rearing the conversation smoothly in a different direction, Lest clapped his hands together. He didnât want to sit on the topic too long and keep her waiting. And he certainly didnât want to take the conversation in places that may be a little too close for comfort. âWith all that settled though, what do you want your little worker bee to do? Clean the cafeteria? Scan some papers? Take out the trash from the second floor departments?âÂ
Done. Done. Annnnnnnd done. But it never hurt to ask, since there was always more to be done and not enough hands to go around.
