Nosferatu (2024) not only can be, but SHOULD BE interpreted as being about many different topics at the same time, including but not limited to: romance, love, abuse, grooming, incest, mental illness, disability, chronic illness, eroticism, disgust, sensuality, queerness, capitalism, class, misogyny, white fears of the Middle East, pandemics, greed, lust, kink, fate, self-determination of destiny, god and faith, sacrifice, higher purpose, etc etc etc.

Nuance exists, and it especially exists in art, and it ESPECIALLY exists in gothic horror. I am begging you people to stop seeing everything so goddamn black and white.

big thing about the terror is how it treats every single death as a massive tragedy. from the death of david young in the first episode through every horror that follows every death scene is given enormous weight in the narrative, it never once feels like anyone is expendable despite most of the cast really not mattering that much. it's such a good choice to make tonally in a show about how these people are simultaneously tools of british colonialism and victims of the indifferent imperial machine.

pisses me off to no end when people on reddit or whatever complain that the show wouldve been better off without the tuunbaq.....did we watch the same show? the tuunbaq is everything, it held everything together. the tuunbaq is the main transformative element of the terror. the tuunbaq elevates the text beyond mere historical fact and lets it say something about the expedition's broader context of imperialism. it hunted the british men who were trampling on its home as a mere stopover, a side casualty, to finding the northwest passage (for, you know, "trade with china" after britain beat china into submission after the imperialist opium war). silna couldnt complete a proper ritual with it because of the british men - just as british colonizers have historically intruded and disrupted the practice of indigenous culture. and in the end the tuunbaq dies, after all the injuries it's taken from the british over the course of 10 episodes and finally chokes to death on the worst of them. because there's no escaping the reality of colonial history, and there is especially no fantastical escape for the colonizer. there's no proper way for us to move forward otherwise.

good historical fiction doesnt have to limit itself to accuracy - it needs empathy to draw out meanings in history using literary craft. thats what the tuunbaq means to me.... if you wanted a straight depiction of historical record, just go watch a documentary.. TUUNBAQ DENIERS DNI

One thing I find interesting about The Terror's cult following is that, on the face of it, the audience that is attached to the show is not at all what I imagine people assumed when it was released.

Like, this a show specifically about history and the military/the navy, with a cast that is 95% white guys. Even with the horror elements, I kind of imagine AMC executives might've thought it would do well with the 'Dad' audience, or people who like stuff like Band of Brothers. (Tobias Menzies' latest show, Manhunt, is in this category, and I don't think it's entirely coincidental that he & Ciarán Hinds were also big main characters on HBO's Rome, something that also fits this niche.)

And instead, it seems like it was mainly embraced by a younger audience (something Jared Harris himself noticed), specifically one that's probably a lot more queer/non-masculine than might have been expected.

I'm sure there are people out there with much more astute analysis than me on why that is, but I wonder if a lot of it is simply down to tone. This isn't a show about the glory of the military or a patriotic mission, or even about men being noble/tough in the face of an ultimately tragic ending.

It's about how all that shit falls apart when it comes to push comes to shove, and how sometimes things that are framed as glorious are actually a pointless fucking tragedy on behalf of an empire that kept chugging right along without them. And the only thing to show for it is the bonds these people formed before they died.

It kind of awakened me like a sleeper agent, this interest in history, and in studying history, that I had heretofore never experienced. I mean, my only sort of thing that I can compare to the way that The Terror made me feel, the way that I dove headfirst into the history behind the show, is like when I got into a band and I would go on the Wayback Machine and look at all their old MySpaces and, like, try to find every picture of them from 2004. Except now it’s, like, dead guys from 100 years ago. But it’s the same, my attention was directed in the same way.
