Making an Effort

After realizing just how much Uranus has always wanted to be his friend, Saturn offers to spend more time with the ice giant to get to know him better.

When I did my "The Thing About Rings Is..." comic, I mentioned that Uranus and Saturn had a lot more to talk about than just Saturn's rings. This is (in part) what I meant, so I guess this is kind of a follow-up to that comic in a way.

I don't think Saturn has ever had bad intentions regarding his relationship with Uranus. He and Jupiter have just always been so wrapped up in each other and have been living in their own bubble; they never even realized how much Uranus wanted to befriend them and hang out with them. But as soon as Saturn realizes this, he does his best to repair the damage that's been done.

Zodiac Series: Scorpio

Alright, so here's the fifth installment of the zodiac series! I'm finally going out of order again with Pluto representing the scorpion of the eighth zodiac sign, Scorpio!

I was going to add in the big scorpion pincers too, but I'm finding with these animal zodiacs that simplicity = good; too much detail = uncanny horror. So we're just going with the scorp tail. I had trouble placing the tail so that it looked like it was coming out from the back of him but also not just pasted in there, which is why it's more in the front in the final product even though that looks a little weird.

Also (and I mentioned this when I did Pisces) I'm using the modern rulers, which is why I've chosen Pluto but put Mars in parentheses at the bottom.

Any scorpions out there? 🦂

Y'all, This Chrysalis Arc...

I'm really enjoying it so far. This is probably the most invested I've been in this series since...the Planet X Arc, maybe?

I’m a Patreon member but wrote and posted this prior to watching this week’s Patreon episode, so who knows how accurate any of this will be after that, haha.

I mentioned this before, but I love how they're telling it with this murder mystery framing. It's not what I was expecting at all and I find it very engaging and a good way to approach the heavy topic of Saturn's moon being destroyed.

I was wondering what tone they were going to use for this arc and I think this way of telling the story allows for the tone to develop and change. I think if this arc had started from more of a bleak outlook, it would end up being more tonally stagnant and maybe not as interesting. It also sets up the "who actually knows/remembers what happens?" in a way that makes it much less obvious than if it had been something like "here's the story told from a specific character because that specific character remembers and/or played a role in the story."

I mean, obviously this is a serious topic and should be treated as such, but this "whodunnit?" start sets up the opportunity for the tone to shift from less emotionally heavy one to a more serious one as more info gets uncovered.

I dig it.

Also, I'd love it if the "more than one is guilty" thing is a hint that they're going to mention the Saturnian-Neptunian resonance as something that played a role in Chrysalis' death. Neptune getting so into his role as a detective only to discover that he played a significant role in the moon's destruction would be great (from the storytelling perspective, at least. Obviously not great for Neppy).

Mercury Meets MESSENGER

On August 3, 2004, the MESSENGER probe was successfully launched into space. Following three gravity-assist flybys (one of Earth, two of Venus, and three of Mercury), it entered an orbit around Mercury on March 18, 2011, and became the first spacecraft to orbit the tiny planet.

During its time in orbit, it achieved a complete mapping of Mercury's surface, examined the chemical composition of its surface, studied its magnetic field, and examined the nature of its exosphere.

After several mission extensions, MESSENGER ended its mission by crashing into Mercury's surface on April 30, 2015.

All of this means, of course, that Venus' attempts at swatting the probe with a giant space fly swatter were unsuccessful.

Oh damn the arc has officially started and according to jack, on a scale of 1 to 10 and how likely we are going to cry from it, he said 8.

Oof, an 8 out of 10? I'm scared, haha.

I like how they've set things up in this first episode. The references to the oft-stated "everything started when Neptune asked Saturn about his rings" was nice and I like how it's getting framed as a mystery to be solved. It'll be interesting to see how the tone shifts from this episode to the future ones as more clues are uncovered.

YES, I do plan on doing a comic about Uranus' collision (or reason for his tilt, I guess)! It's been on my comic to-do list for a while, but I've had an uptick in people asking for it recently, so maybe I'll try to do it soon. It will definitely be a multi-part comic like Emergence, but I need to first decide which main theory for Uranus' tilt I want to go with before figuring out the story.

I've just been busy during all of the ones so far. Besides uranus, who would you say is your favorite character to draw comics for?

Hi Anon! Thanks for the ask and sorry for taking a while to get to it (as always, haha).

Character- and story-wise, I'd say Saturn. Not only is he my second favorite character, but there's a lot to his personality, situation, and relationships to explore. I'm really enjoying making those "Saturn meets one of his moons" comics because 1) Saturn; and 2) I can add some science-y stuff in there, which is always fun!

Drawing-wise, though, I'd probably say Triton. I like giving him super expressive eyebrows because of his sunglasses and enjoy drawing him peering over/under his shades. Triton's also my favorite moon, so that helps too. XD

A Moment for Jupiter

Jupiter gets some appreciation for all he does for the Solar System.

A little story time for this comic: so this was originally going to be Jupiter prompting Saturn to read about his (Saturn's) chapter in The Story of the Heavens (by Sir Robert S. Ball; beautiful prose - read it!) to help him feel better about himself, but I kinda already did that with Saturn and Uranus. So then I decided to make it about Jupiter, since I haven't really done a comic about him before and he deserves some recognition for all the good he does for everyone else.

Then I learned that it was @dreamie-artsss's birthday this week, so I figured it was in the stars for me to do a Jupiter-based comic, haha. So this is dedicated to you, Dreamie! Happy birthday! :D

Zodiac Series: Cancer

Here's the fourth installment of the zodiac series! We have Luna representing the crab of the fourth zodiac sign (and the only sign ruled by a moon), Cancer!

The challenge with this one was to make it not look creepy. Not sure if I succeeded.

I also chose to use a blue crab's claws instead of, say, a dungeness crab's because I figured the bright red would make it look even more unnerving.

Also, @blood-moon8896, I did NOT forget your birthday! While it's probably not June 30 in your time zone anymore, it still technically is in the time zone I'm in right now, so I'm going to count it! Either way, happy (possibly slightly belated) birthday!

I have about five different very loose ideas for comics any given week and I excel at waiting until the last possible minute to pick one and flesh it out into an actual working concept.

I guess I could give the hint "Saturn" because it's probably going to involve him, but I haven't zeroed in on the specific idea yet and no guarantees if I'm actually going to end up picking a Saturn-focused one. XD
