My friend Vanja had kindly commissioned me to draw her sona, Veida! This is a full-body sketch with colours for $45 plus her skirt's pattern for $10, the water effect/prop for $5, and the alternate soup-bending version for $5 (see below). If you'd like a drawing like this for yourself, check out my rates here!

Getting a commission from your friend who's also an art student hits different, because wdym I'm intentionally being made to draw things I basically never draw. Why does this feel like an assignment. Why does the feedback feel it came from an instructor. Jokes aside, this commission is somewhat out of my comfort zone because I'm used to drawing my own characters whose designs are optimised for comics, aka their designs and colour palettes are pretty simple.

Veida's design is anything but LOL though surprisingly, it wasn't as much of a challenge to draw than I anticipated. I just had to sit and study her outfit and all the patterns for a while before jumping right into it. I'm pretty happy with the final result not just because it looks nice, but because I now know I can draw a design as detailed and as colourful as this one! :)

Btw here's lore for the soup version. Intially Vanja told me that Veida's personality was like hers and that I can do whatever pose I wanted. Veida also has water powers, so I wanted to combine that with how Vanja and I often ate shabu shabu together when we met up. So I came up with that original idea. Obviously it got scrapped LMAO. The pose actually fit Veida, but Vanja wanted me to draw a graceful, feminine pose since I usually don't draw those, so I changed the pose LOLLL (do NOT let me cook)

Is it really possible to breed peafowl and chickens?

Unfortunately yes, but it shouldn’t be done because the offspring have a lot of health complications (particularly heart issues) and most hybrid birds across species died within the first few years of life. I’ve personally seen pictures of 3 different peafowl-chicken crosses, one from history but unnamed (first 2 photos) and 2 accidents more recently (twisted sister (3rd photo) and chickpea (last photo, and here is a video of chickpea). No information aside from what is listed in the article is available for the first.

Twisted Sister (below) was originally posted to a forum I belonged to, as a bird their neighbor owned, and the OP lost track of what happened to the bird after the neighbor moved away. The neighbor at the time reported the bird was 8 or 9 years old. Twisted Sister was reported to make a sound like “a cross between a squawk and a honk. It’s a deep sound, […] like a rusty door of a old car being wrenched open”

The sound described by Twisted Sister’s owner was caught on video by Chickpea’s (below) owner and seems to be described quite accurately. Chickpea was found deceased from unknown causes at just under three years of age. He is believed to have passed due to hybrid complications rather than illness or injury.

Please do not do this to birds. Fowl, unlike some species, do not experience hybrid vigor from breeding across species. They typically lead short lives and can suffer painful medical issues. While there have only been rare instances of peafowl breeding chickens, there have been more than a few crosses with other species, and none of the offspring do well or live long.
