Meet the cast!

Since this blog is now for all of my 40k brainchildren, I figure I’ll introduce them all.

Deus Machina - Formerly Magos Lukas Salazar of Stygies VII, Deus is an inventor and innovator of the biological sciences who has a sadistic streak a mile wide, all of which precipitated his fall to Chaos and worship of Tzeentch. Currently he is the master of a collectively sentient and very hungry swarm of insectoid nanomachines called the Phage. The Phage is linked to his mind and has more influence on his thoughts and behavior than he cares to admit. 

Adaemos Zenyth - Magos Secutor of Graia, Zenyth is the heavy weapons expert and master of Skitarii for Inquisitor Nelson. Has a friendly rivalry in battle with Strix of the Deathwatch and a massive crush on Magos Explorator Halnynk Gladix. He also has a secret innovative streak that’s led him to more effective weapon designs based on xenos technology. Many of his peers wouldn’t appreciate this ingenuity if they knew, but he might find more approval from one Archmagos Belisarius Cawl...

Aster Amarathys - A tech-priest from a psychic power-prone family, it’s unsurprising that he turned out to be a psyker himself. When his secret came out, in exchange for allowing him to live, a radical Inquisitor asked that he work for him when asked. In that work he found a friend (of sorts) for life in Brick Blastpunch, an ex-cop with a debt to the same Inquisitor. He also found that the confluence of technology and psychic power was a woefully underexplored area of research. His search for research partners got rapidly out of hand, and now he’s the head of a cult of tech-priest psykers. He still hasn’t noticed.

Lieutenant Savant Arin Graves - Battle psyker for the Imperial Guard. At one point ended up being the one human left in a squad of genestealers, and is now working alongside the Deathwatch along with his squad. Was one of two survivors of a prolonged siege of his former squad by the forces of Nurgle, and has been left with some pretty severe PTSD that is getting the traditional Imperial Guard treatment of being ignored in the expectation that he’ll die soon. He’s a major germaphobe and has a caffeine addiction that would make a normal man’s heart explode. Maybe if he doesn’t sleep he won’t have to see the nightmares again.

Eta Kareina A - Very close to being an example of why you don’t keep asking questions when the Adeptus Mechanicus tells you no, now she’s the Chief Enginseer of the Superbia Ruinam, a vessel of the D’Ceneri Rogue Trader dynasty. If her existence was not of questionable legality before, it certainly is now that she’s discovered psychically active xenos technology and grafted it onto her body. Formerly eternally done with her Lord-Captain’s family issues, she is now working on ridding her ship of the last vestiges of his megalomania.

Sylvain Warner - Ever the oddball in any scenario, Syl is the Warp Guide of the Superbia Ruinam. He’s also a member of the corrupted Warner lineage, whose intimate and at times unstable connection to the Warp has made them into a House of living cartoons. Never content to be cooped up in the navigation spire, he frequently accompanies his crewmates on ground missions, frequently without their knowledge. Despite his impulsive personality and easy distractibility, he is a highly capable Navigator who has traversed Warp storms in the dark and come through alive.

I wrote some garbage for @teeth-of-glass-and-slimes‘s OC Deus. He is a scary sadistic cyborg birb man with a mind link to a ravenous cloud of nanites that inflicts him with horror hunger so ofc I lov him. 

Deus did not mind the occasional traversals into deep space his crew’s missions sometimes took them on. Things like cabin fever and Vacuum Proximity Syndrome had long ago given up any attempts at assaulting his psyche, and wandered off to look for more viable targets.

Question for the Deus panel: Say you are applying for funding from your local Mad Science regulatory agency. Please briefly describe your hypothetical grant proposal.

(all nine Deuses are sitting at a long table akin to a convention panel table. why they are here they aren’t sure, but they’re going with it)

All the 40k Deuses: Applying? Funding? Haven’t done that in a while.

Canon!Deus: I don’t think the Dark Mechanicum has ever denied me resources before. Especially after Fabulus turned to Chaos, after that they had all the money they could ever want. And the same could be said of the Captain, for that matter. 

Khorne!Deus: Well, if they ever do, I’ve found that a power axe at the throat is a pretty effective application.

Slaanesh!Deus: I’m in the same boat as the pretty one (gesturing at canon!Deus). Never had to apply. Naturally. Who would ever deny my genius?

Khorne!Deus: Suddenly I just really want to punch you in the face. 

Slaanesh!Deus: As if anyone could bear to ruin something as beautiful as my face.

(Khorne!Deus raises a fist to ruin Slaanesh!Deus’s beautiful face. His hand is snatched by Nurgle!Deus and slammed back onto the table)

Nurgle!Deus: …The thing about that is, we haven’t done that much…research…in a while. We have been…preoccupied.

Slaanesh!Deus: Speak for yourself.

Nurgle!Deus: We are.

(there is a long pause as the Deuses that have had any interaction with the Phage realize the implications of what Nurgle!Deus is saying)

Ducktales!Deus: …Anyways! It didn’t actually take all that much arm twisting to get my grant proposal accepted. Most Duckberg grant agencies value technological progress, so phrasing my exploratory mission as a search for lost ancient technology that would make the world a better place got it approved I think the second time I submitted it. That the technology in question was a nanotech doomsday weapon and that “making the world a better place” meant devouring every living thing on the planet didn’t need to be said.

Sonic!Deus: Funny thing, I actually got mine through by doing the opposite. Turns out when the guy in charge of literally everything is single-mindedly obsessed with “killing that hedgehog,” telling him you plan to build weapons of mass destruction with your funding actually opens a lot of doors.

SU!Deus: To some extent, I was the same way. Homeworld has a certain obsession with colonial expansion and warfare. By the time I was formed, they would take anything, do anything that would give them an advantage, no matter how depraved. I took advantage of that.

CofD!Deus: …am I the only one who has to deal with institutions with any degree of sanity? I basically have to jump from institution to institution, faking my credentials and pretending to be different people to cover my tracks. I make up different reasons to need human subjects that wouldn’t raise eyebrows and might also, you know, get people to think “yeah, I want to see the results of that.” And it has to be different every time, so nobody connects the dots and gets suspicious. And even then I’m afraid someone’s going to catch me. And you people can just say “yeah I’m going to destroy the world” and get money? I mean, fair, it’s hard for me to complain about sanity when I’m using grant funding to make it easier for me to torture and eat people, but still. 

canon!Deus: …that’s fuckin’ brilliant, actually. I wish I’d done that when I was still with the Adeptus Mechanicus.

((Crisis on Infinite Deuses))

((Or, a currently comprehensive list of Deus AU Versions, with a brief description of each))

Canon Deus: The one you all know and love. Mad scientist, heretek, chosen of Tzeentch. He’s curious and sadistic, a deadly combo. Loves experimenting on people or just taking them apart. Currently in possession of a hungry nano-swarm called the Phage. Barely sleeps. Doesn’t eat unless he has to, but when he does have to, he can’t stop himself. Pretty much crazy.

Nurgle Deus: Like Canon Deus, but dedicated to Nurgle. A little dazed and out of it most of the time, he is in constant pain from being slowly consumed by the Phage and deals with it by ingesting large amounts of drugs. He has very little concept of himself as a separate entity from the Phage, referring to himself by its name. He acts much like Deus, just less excitable and more chill.

Slaanesh Deus: This Deus brings the canon Deus’ narcissism to the forefront. He is flashy and self-absorbed and sees people as playthings to push around. He also dials up the crazy, seemingly looking for an excuse to bite into someone or drag someone back to his labs to be experimented on. He is even more vain than canon Deus; he responds violently to the implication that he is incapable of anything, particularly tech-related things.

Khorne Deus: A violent-minded individual obsessed with fine-tuning his ability to kill to perfect efficiency. He loves the carnage the Phage wreaks in its attempts to feed, almost to the point of sexual attraction to it. Gladly accepts the Phage’s hunger and tends to take bites out of his enemies after he kills them. Doesn’t so much experiment on people as tear them to pieces.

Ducktales Deus: There’s two design versions, from the original and from the 2017 reboot, but both are avid treasure hunters. He has a somewhat different idea than most about what treasure is though. He’s looking for ancient and forgotten technology. Particularly, he’s looking for a doomsday weapon with which to wipe Duckberg and surrounding areas off the map. Why? Just because he can. Because he likes power.

Steven Universe Deus: An engineer Gem, this Deus, a Rutile, is the origin point of the Gem shard and mutation experiments. She appreciates the practical applications that Homeworld has found for her work, but she finds that its greatest value is in the screams and distorted cries of tortured Gems. She is physically as well as mentally unstable, her form distorted and birdlike rather than the humanoid form Gems almost always take. She has massive technological augmentations, which make her a dangerous foe despite her lack of weapon.

Sonic Deus: This Deus, like Ducktales Deus, operates on a much smaller scale than many of the other Deuses, being limited to a planet, and oftentimes a country. This allows Deus’s omnicidal maniac tendencies to emerge. This Deus also wants to kill everybody in the world, not that he quite realizes that’s what he’s doing. He wants to create a tech paradise, but that involves either murdering all organic beings or turning them all into robots. He tends to take the first option.

Chronicles/World of Darkness Deus: Deus is a Claimed, one permanently possessed and merged with a spirit. The sprit in question is a magath, a bizarre hybrid spirit, in this case of hunger and pain, that calls itself the Phage. Deus was an accomplished medical student, and he takes advantage of this experience with the human body as a Claimed to cause extreme pain to everyone he can. He’s also constantly hungry and will eat damn near anything you give him, as long as it’s not got poppy seeds in it.

((Not really. He’s developed somewhat of a fear of dirt and germs recently, but given that he’s got Pustus wandering around the ship, that one probably isn’t irrational.))

12: What is one of the most primary things your OC feels that is missing from their life?

((A sense of independent purpose. He feels like he does almost all he does is related to helping the Phage spread, and what he does do for himself feels more like feeding an obsession than doing something with a purpose.))

19: What boosts your OC’s confidence the most?

((One thing: when other people praise him for accomplishing something, especially when they previously thought he couldn’t do it. Another thing: outsmarting the Mechanicus.))

22: How does your OC usually show affection? Are they openly romantic or more restricted with their affectionate emotions?

((Deus is aromantic, so he’s not going to be romantically affectionate either way, but in terms of platonic affection for other people, he tends to be more reserved. Affection from Deus is basically spending time in a person’s presence and not acting like he can’t wait to get back to being by himself.))

26: What is the most intense thing your OC has been battling with?

((External conflict-wise, Deus has been trying and failing to steal a relic from the Mechanicus, but now that Gladix is involved he’s hell-bent on not only stealing the relic but killing Gladix while he does it. Internal conflict-wise, Deus is still trying to fight the hunger the Phage is transferring to him, because eating gets in the way of his work but the longer he goes without eating or letting the Phage eat the more unbearable the hunger gets.))

28: How would your OC react if a bully stole their lunch money in high school?

((Naturally, when does it not?))

Trashcan: I’ve got two, actually. One is a standard trashcan, the other is a biohazard waste disposal unit. They’re both rather large and in need of emptying. I should get a servitor to do that. It just keeps slipping my mind. The former contains a lot of paper balls, broken glassware, pens, and the occasional snack wrapper. The latter contains needles, bloody clothes, and, currently, an ear. I’m not sure how that got in there, but I have no intentions of dealing with it right now.

Knick-Knacks: I don’t know if they count as “knick-knacks” so much as they do “trophies,” but I do have a significant number of teeth laying around with no other purpose than to look interesting. I should do something with those. Maybe make a necklace.

Jewelry/Accessories: I have this cog icon pendant that I was given back when I was first inducted into the Cult Mechanicus. It’s at least 60 years old now, so it’s in rather poor condition, but it’s still recognizable for what it is.

Toys/Stuffed Animals: Nebu and I found a book on knitting in the Silver Tower and decided to try out one of the patterns, so I now have a stuffed Screamer sitting on one of the lab benches. It’s surprisingly cute. There’s also this archaeotech puzzle cube I found at one point. Occasionally I’ll take it with me places and solve it if I need to do something with my hands.

Framed Photos: Testament took a pict of Nebu and me reading together and gave it to me in a frame. It used to have hearts and the acronym “bffs” on it, but I removed those.

Homely Decorations: The closest thing to “homely” in my lab is the sleeping bag in the back corner.

Hairbrush: Don’t really have one anymore. I’ll occasionally use a comb to smooth my feathers, but that’s about it. Though when I was younger I had a solid plasteel hairbrush because I kept breaking every other kind. Hurt my head like hell, but it sure did get the tangles out.
