Add “distress” to your pain scale

Pain scale? More like pain in the booty. No two people seem to read it the same way, and chronic folks tend to downplay their pain.

So here’s an idea: when asked to rate your pain, provide a number to rate your distress levels in addition to your pain levels.

Some examples:

“I’m at a 5 on the pain scale, but my distress is basically a 1 because this is my usual.”

“I’m at a 3 on the pain scale, but my distress is a 7 because this is new pain and affects a part of my body that’s very important to my work.”

It’s a great way to consider how your pain is impacting you—and to get a doctor’s attention where it’s actually needed.

internet censorship bill about to pass congress:

ao3 is facing a ddos attack from an overseas right-wing anonymous group because it contains "degeneracy and disgusting things like LGBT and NSFW".

they're not the only right-wing group that is attacking fanfiction sites because of queer & nsfw content. the Heritage foundation, the US right wing think tank that writes laws for republicans, wrote an article about how "big tech turns kids trans" in which they're advocating for the Kid's Online Safety Act to pass because it will give state attorney generals power to sue websites for "potentially harmful content towards minors". in this article they point out websites like wattpad, tumblr, tiktok, twitter as sites that GOP attorney generals can and will target for censorship if this bill passes. all places where fandom, that's mostly queer, hangs out.

if you think this bill has no chance of passing because of all the red flags it poses, think again. it currently has 38 cosponsors in the senate, and is being pushed by the democrats as a "protecting the children!!" type bill.

there are left-aligned orgs in congress rn lobbying for this bill to pass. july is extremely decisive, because if KOSA goes through to markup it'll be bundled with the Earn It act, Restrict, and all the other bad internet bills and passed as a package, completely censoring the internet forever.

(i hope this comes off articulated and understandable because ive been boiling with rage since yesterday about this so if im all over the place please bear with me. please feel free to add / correct anything ive said in reblogs or tags or comments.)

that being said, idk who needs to realise this but

the determination and definition of what constitutes a "woman" and "womanhood" that terfs and radfems cling to, and through which they shamelessly exclude women of color and trans women from their fight for liberation, was born in and constructed by white supremacy and misogynoir.

the definition of what constitutes a woman was developed as an identity that only exists as a diametric opposition to black women, who in the time of slavery were only refered to as "female", not women. black women were denied humanity for their race and different bodies and features, and because of that, white women were immediately the definition of womanhood.

black women were, and still very much are, seen as aggressive, hypersexual, animalistic, crass & masculine; white women were, and still very much are, seen as delicate, docile, weak, innocent & feminine, and thus needed to be protected from black women by white men. and the attributes placed on black women only further leant to the reduction of our humanity and thus, solidified our position as less worthy of acknowledgement, consideration or respect. at all.

the patriarchy was built to benefit the white man first, and then white women through them. and this is where white feminism comes in...

white feminism is a "feminism" that only prioritises the oppression of cis, white, heterosexual, conventionally attractive, able-bodied, feminine & fertile women. white feminists are not working to dismantle the patriarchy, which continues black women, other women of color, queer & trans women perpetually oppressed due to its construction through and for white supremacy, they just want a larger chunk of the pot for themselves.

and ONLY themselves.

the racist rhetoric they used and continue using against black women, is the same transphobic rhetoric they are now also using against queer and trans women. once again, they are the women and we are the "monsters" that threaten their safety and against whom their humanity is recognised.

white feminist women directly benefit from the patriarchy's system of white supremacy, as within it they maintain their attributions of humanity & innocence, and thus the only ones deserving of protection and liberation. in their eyes, they will always be innocent, because their oppression is the only kind that ever mattered to the system, as they were and are seen as the only other participants of it besides white men.

in the patriarchy, there are three spaces: the white human man, the white human women, and the other.

in this patriarchy, we (black women, women of color, queer & trans women) are not seen as human, and thus our pain & oppression is not recognised as deserving of addressing, let alone removing.

oppressions only experienced by women of color, queer women & trans women are never addressed or even acknowledged but i can guarantee that if it was white women who face them, they would've been at least ACTIVELY looked into.

white women receive the privilege of acknowledged humanity within the patriarchy by themselves and white men; white feminism allows them to benefit from the same patriarchal benefits as white men so, in this...

there is nothing a black woman, a woman of color, a queer or trans woman can do to ever be seen as equal women in the eyes of white feminists, terfs and radfems. literally nothing. we will never be enough to be counted. because the only people that are women to them are cis, white, heterosexual, conventionally attractive, feminine & fertile women, and the determination that these qualities make someone a women were categorised in opposition to black women. anyone else is not considered a person.

and because they cannot and will never consider anyone outside of that descriptor as "a real woman" or a person, or a human, they feel no shame or guilt or regret or remorse at taking away our human rights. because in their eyes, we were never owed them or deserve them in the first place.

so, for everyone who is black, a person of color, queer and/or trans, our fight for equality must be one fought together. we must all stand together for intersectional feminism, one that considers, includes and attributed humanity to ALL women and ALL people.

and for every white woman, you must also be active in recognising your position in this society, the many ways you benefit from the patriarchy as a white woman, and fighting not only for yourself to be free from oppression, but learn about the many many ways other women are oppressed & fight for their freedoms and humanity also.

we are literally fighting to be recognised as human! how sad is that...

but we need to work together to break down this culture and system white supremacy, because until that is completely destroyed, none of us will ever be free.

There's people in the notes talking about "not basing your worth off numbers", and like. that isn't what this post is about. It's not a threat, either, it's a comment on how this site works, at a mechanical level.

Likes are worthless. Let me say that again.

Likes. Are. Worthless.

They don't do anything. They're a bookmark. They were never part of how tumblr works - in the early days we didn't even have a like button, and the site still more or less acts as though we don't. They're personal bookmarks and the only people who "get" anything from them are you (you bookmark the post) and the OP (maybe a very slight serotonin boost), but they don't keep the post in circulation, they don't keep it alive.

Without reblogs, a post will be dead in the water within an hour. No matter how good it is, no matter how many hours of painstaking love and attention its creator put into it, it will be dead within an hour and never seen again. It gets pushed down the dashboard and nobody aside from the followers who were online when it was posted will see it. And there's a huge difference in engagement on posts that get even one lucky reblog from someone with wider reach - that one reblog shows your post to five, ten, fifteen other people, and if one of those people also reblogs it, and so on and so forth, that's how posts stay alive and in circulation. It's like a contagion, but we're sharing creativity instead of disease.

And that matters. That "lifespan" of the post matters, artists and writers give up on this site and go to sites where posts have longer lifespans because it sucks to spend hours of your life, maybe even days, to get two notes and some fucking pocket lint for your efforts. We create for ourselves, but we share because we want people to see it, because that engagement offers positive feedback and encouragement to continue. But more than that, if every post (whether art, fic, gifset, whatever) is dying within an hour or a day of being posted, that means it's not making it onto your dashboard. And if it's not on your dashboard, you won't see it. This kills the site, after a while. You stop seeing the posts, because nobody is putting them on your dashboard, because this site doesn't have an algorithm like twitter and insta's and it shouldn't, it's the last bastion of chronological timelines.

Forgive my giant fucking rant I am so tired right now and full of the plague but like stop acting like artists and writers are just being whiny little babies, or "threatening" to withhold our fucking work (you're not entitled to it! it's ours! if we get nothing out of sharing it we're well within our rights to keep it private!) when we say this site will dry up without reblogs. We're just stating facts.
